Our Father

“And I when I am lifted up will draw all men to myself” (John 12:32). Drawn to Christ, we dare to pray as he taught us, calling God “our Father” (Matthew 6:9). The Lord’s Prayer opens the Communion Rite. “Pray then like this,” said Jesus (Matthew 6:9). By means of his prayer, “the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought” (Romans 8:26).

“Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). In the petition for daily food we express, above all, our hunger for the “Bread of Life” (John 6:48). We ask too for purification from sin — “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us” (Matthew 6:12) — so as to approach in holiness the holy mysteries of Christ’s Body and Blood.

The priest introduces the Lord’s Prayer; all sing or say it together with him. After the last petition, “but deliver us from evil,” the priest alone continues in a prayer for deliverance “from every evil” and for peace. The people conclude with a doxology. The Roman Missal provides a simple chant for the invitation, the Lord’s Prayer itself, the prayer that prolongs it, and the doxology.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES ANNUAL APPEAL

Each year we are invited to participate in the Catholic Charities campaign. The answer to this call, Bishop Baker tells us, "is a response of gratitude, because our Lord and our God has given us very much.”

The theme for this year's campaign is "It's not how much we give, but how much LOVE we put into giving" - (St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta). Bishop Baker reminds us that “this call to love is reflected in the work of Catholic Charities throughout the Diocese of Birmingham.” Your contribution will help the work of more than 56 organizations and ministries serving people in need and will also support the pastoral work in our Diocese.

The Hispanic Community in our diocese is blessed abundantly each year by receiving financial support from Catholic Charities to aid the work and services of the Diocesan Office of Hispanic Ministry and the Hispanic Office of Social Services known as "La Casita."

175,500 people were helped in North Alabama by Catholic Charities. Many of them were Hispanics. La Casita provided social assistance to 10,298 Latinos in the Diocese of Birmingham. On the other hand, the Office of Hispanic Ministry organized events and provided resources to support the pastoral work of hundreds of youth and adults in our Diocese. Some these events include: The Summer Camp for Young Adults at Camp Tekakwitha, Advent and Lent Retreats, Liturgical Music Workshop for parish choirs and two Eucharistic Concerts with the recognized singer Jon Carlo. Each year the Hispanic Ministry office supports the men and women Cursillo, as well as the events organized by the Hispanic Charismatic Renewal.

This year the School of Ministries was launched. This is a formation program offered by SEPI (The Southeast Pastoral Institute for Hispanic Ministry under the United States Bishops Office). More than 200 people signed up from across our diocese to participate. This office also provides support to parishes serving Hispanic Families and serves as liaison between other diocesan programs and ministries wanting to reach out to the growing Hispanic population.

Through Catholic Charities’ Annual Campaign, we can see the face of Jesus on the faces and lives of the needy and can take an active role in evangelization. No gift or donation is too small ... WHEN IT IS OFFERED FROM THE HEART. What we do for the most needy, we do for the Lord.

How can you be part of this campaign? You can fill out your pledge card and return at Mass. You can commit to a

monthly or one time donation. Or visit www.catholiccharitiesbhm.org to donate online. All donations are tax deductible.

¡Thank you in advance for your generosity! For more information about how to contribute, please contact your Parish Office.

Stewardship

The Gospels tell us time and again that the apostles did not expect a suffering Christ, and so when Jesus spoke of suffering, they plugged their ears and didn’t listen, and so were confused and scared. What about us? What’s in the Word of God that we find hard to hear and contrary to our desires and expectations? That might just be exactly what we need to hear!

SCRIP is a program where our school sells gift cards from many different companies. You purchase them at face value but the company gives the school a percentage back.

It is a Win-Win situation. For just a few minutes of your time after weekend Masses in the Gathering Space or during the week at the Parish Office you can purchase these gift cards and the school makes money to help with their programs. Please consider using SCRIP whenever you can.
