25-10-2018 From DATRI’s Desk 1 We as sensive human beings always want to see everybody happy, healthy and at peace. While many are contended and leading a healthy life, a large secon of the society is deprived of it. ‘Being healthy’ is just a distant dream for them. Paents with deadly blood disorders are one among them, who are baling against various life threatening diseases every day. They and their family can be relieved of their sufferings by our simple act of kindness. According to the ICMR, in India in 2010 around 1,04,239 blood and lymphac malignancies were diagnosed and the number is expected to increase to 1,32,574 cases per year by 2020. For many paents Blood Stem Cell transplant is the only hope of cure for these fatal disorders and finding an HLA matched donor is an essenal inial step to find this permanent cure. DATRI currently has searches for over 2000+ paents and many more paents in India are waing for a match. While they wait for their life saving match, they undergo chemotherapy. So, in many of the cases, by the me the elusive match is found, either the chemotherapy takes the paent or the cancer does. The best case situaon is one where, when a paent comes to us looking for a match, we are able to find him/her a match immediately from the already registered donors and can facilitate the donaon immediately, thereby significantly increasing the paent’s chances of survival and reducing the subsequent cost of treatment. But in order to do so, keeping in mind the very low odds of finding a match, there is a need for a much larger registry. At DATRI our dream is to make the society free from fatal blood disorders, which is only possible by contribuons from generous socially sensive folks. Our registry currently has about 3, 80,000 registered donors. We have facilitated 442 blood stem cell donaons ll date. However, the odds of finding a match is 1:10,000 to 1:10,00,000. We are commied to expanding the naonwide registry across all parts of India. However, each registraon costs DATRI Rs.1800 towards HLA typing cost. On receiving funding support from generous people in the society, DATRI can mulply its efforts and together we can strive to save more lives. When you donate money to DATRI you are saving lives. Blood cancer is on the rise and there are several families which need financial support for tesng their friends and family members in order to find that elusive match to save their loved one's life. They rely on the act of kindness by a stranger who will help cover this cost. And this act of kindness does not go in vain. It carries forward as ripples - because the friends and family members whose lab costs have been paid for will get added to the DATRI database and they in turn agree to donate their stem cells for a paent in the future, if they are ever a match. Thus not only do you help families which are down on their luck, you also help create the ripples that spread and help grow the registry that will connue to save many more lives. There are many ways for you to help people receive the life-saving transplant they need. Give a oneme giſt; Give a monthly giſt, Donate in honour of someone etc. Every INR 1800/- raised adds a potenal Blood Stem Cell donor to DATRI. We as sensitive human beings always want to see everybody happy, healthy and at peace. While many are contended and leading a healthy life, a large section of the society is deprived of it. ‘Being healthy’ is just a distant dream for them. Patients with deadly blood disorders are one among them, who are battling against various life threatening diseases every day. They and their family can be relieved of their sufferings by our simple act of kindness.

According to the ICMR, in India in 2010 around 1,04,239 blood and lymphatic malignancies were diagnosed and the number is expected to increase to 1,32,574 cases per year by 2020. For many patients Blood Stem Cell transplant is the only hope of cure for these fatal disorders and finding an HLA matched donor is an essential initial step to find this permanent cure.

DATRI currently has searches for over 2000+ patients and many more patients in India are waiting for a match. While they wait for their life saving match, they undergo chemotherapy. So, in many of the cases, by the time the elusive match is found, either the chemotherapy takes the patient or the cancer does. The best case situation is one where, when a patient comes to us looking for a match, we are able to find him/her a match immediately from the already registered donors and can facilitate the donation immediately, thereby significantly increasing the patient’s chances of survival and reducing the subsequent cost of treatment. But in order to do so, keeping in mind the very low odds of finding a match, there is a need for a much larger registry. At DATRI our dream is to make the society free from fatal blood disorders, which is only possible by contributions from generous socially sensitive folks.

Our registry currently has about 3, 80,000 registered donors. We have facilitated 442 blood stem cell donations till date. However, the odds of finding a match is 1:10,000 to 1:10,00,000.

We are committed to expanding the nationwide registry across all parts of India. However, each registration costs DATRI Rs.1800 towards HLA typing cost. On receiving funding support from generous people in the society, DATRI can multiply its efforts and together we can strive to save more lives.

When you donate money to DATRI you are saving lives. Blood cancer is on the rise and there are several families which need financial support for testing their friends and family members in order to find that elusive match to save their loved one's life. They rely on the act of kindness by a stranger who will help cover this cost. And this act of kindness does not go in vain. It carries forward as ripples - because the friends and family members whose lab costs have been paid for will get added to the DATRI database and they in turn agree to donate their stem cells for a patient in the future, if they are ever a match. Thus not only do you help families which are down on their luck, you also help create the ripples that spread and help grow the registry that will continue to save many more lives.

There are many ways for you to help people receive the life-saving transplant they need. Give a onetime gift; Give a monthly gift, Donate in honour of someone etc. Every INR 1800/- raised adds a potential Blood Stem Cell donor to DATRI.

To save the life of the patient of blood cancer is in the hands of ordinary people like you. Help save a life.

Hi everybody, I am the mother of a 17-month-old baby girl, her name is Alesha . Alesha has been diagnosed with a bone marrow failure and with her condition right now she is going for transfusions twice a week for platelets and sometimes for red blood cell counts as well. Her veins are very small so she needs a VAT (Vascular Access) Team, who can come in and look for her veins. It’s extremely painful for her to go through twice a week. Her condition right now is deteriorating. She is having a lot of adverse reaction with platelets. Her organs are beginning to fail. The major problem we see is she is unable to gain any weight at all; it has been over a year and she has plateaued. So it’s a humble request to everybody out there, I don’t care what race, what creed, what ethnicity you are. Please go ahead and sign up, donate. You never know whose life you are going to save and the prayers and thanks you are going to receive. Thank you for patiently listening to my plea.

Gift a life and take a healthier lifestyle as a return gift.

Apollo Cancer Speciality Hospital, Chennai.

Upkeep of good health is essential especially for a donor of Blood Stem Cells, since micronutrients such as vitamins, dietary minerals, essential fatty acids, and essential amino acids, play a

vital role in efficient yield of the Blood Stem Cells.

The gift of life is the most treasured gift one could ever give. The modern medicine has done a miracle in finding a permanent cure for patients with several acquired and inherited malignant and non-malignant disorders, in the form of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT). Registries such as DATRI are rendering an impressive service by recruiting blood stem cell donors and connecting them with the patients in need. The interesting aspect of being a donor of blood stem cells is not just one can be a savior for someone by gifting a life but also can adopt several corrective measures to improve one’s own lifestyle, which will yield long-term benefits on their holistic health.

Having associated with DATRI as a Medical Director, I asses the health condition of the donors based on their health check-up reports. The examination of the medical reports of a sample group of donors has revealed that around 68% have Vitamin D deficiency, 51% are deficient in vitamin B12, almost 9% have iron deficiency and 8% suffer from fatty liver. This clearly shows the impact of their lifestyle on their health. Less exposure to sunlight, intake of food which is deficient in essential nutrients, lack of leisure and lack of work-life balance are some of the causes. Bringing a few positive changes in terms of taking a balanced diet, turning away from a closed-door culture and connecting with nature, a regular exercise regime can result in remarkable improvements.

Upkeep of good health is essential especially for a donor of Blood Stem Cells, since micronutrients such as vitamins, dietary minerals, essential fatty acids, and essential amino acids, play a vital role in efficient yield of the Blood Stem Cells. Therefore, the donors are also prescribed and provided with nutrition supplement medication, which will benefit both the donors and the process of donation. Therefore by being a donor and gifting a life, one is receiving a return gift of an opportunity to know one’s own status of health and improve the same.

Registration Process

Donation ProcessIf an individual is found to be a match, there are two ways of donating blood stem cells i.e. Peripheral Blood Stem Cell (PBSC) donation and Bone Marrow Harvest. For a PBSC donation, once the donor completes the master health check-up, he/she will be given an injection called Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor(GCSF) for 5 days to stimulate the blood stem cells production and bring them from the marrow to the blood stream. Blood Stem Cells will be collected in a 4-5 hours of out-patient procedure called Apheresis. For a Bone Marrow Harvest, the marrow will be collected from the hip bone of the donor under general Anesthesia. Here is a visual representation of the procedure.

When an individual comes forward to register as a blood stem cell donor, he/she becomes a potential life-saver. Anyone between the age of 18-50 years can register as a blood stem cell donor. Registration is simple - the registration process is represented below:
