Faithful Fivers

Faithful Fivers are A.A. Members who graciously contribute $5.00 or more* each month to support their local Cen-

tral Office in its efforts to carry the A.A. message of hope and recovery to those alcoholics still suffering in our area.

As a Faithful Fiver, your personal contribution will help make these vital services possible. The Faithful Fiver idea

came about when we remembered that we wasted much more than $5.00 a week during our drinking days.

YES! I wish to participate as a Faithful Fiver!

Here is my contribution of $ __________ for __________months.

The A.A. groups themselves ought to be fully sup-ported by the voluntary contributions of their own members. We think that each group should soon achieve this ideal; that any public solicita-tion of funds using the name of Alcoholics Anony-mous is highly dangerous, whether by groups, clubs, hospitals, or other outside agencies; that acceptance of large gifts from any source, or of contributions carrying any obligation whatever, is unwise. Then, too, we view with much concern those A.A. treasuries which continue, beyond prudent reserves, to accumulate funds for no stated A.A. purpose. Experience has often warned us that nothing can so surely destroy our spiritual heritage as futile disputes over property, money, and authority. - Tradition Seven (long form)

GETTING SOBER IN SOBER LIVING:

LAST MONTH, I TOOK A CHIP TO CELEBRATE 8 YEARS OF RE-

COVERY. HOWEVER, THE MOST IMPORTANT TIME IN MY SO-

BRIETY WAS THE FIRST FEW WEEKS….

I GOT SOBRIETY, AS THE SONG SAYS...WITH A LITTLE HELP

FROM MY FRIENDS. FRIENDS IN SOBER LIVING, FRIENDS AT

MEETINGS AND FRIENDS I MET ALONG THE WAY. I NEEDED

PROFESSIONAL TREATMENT, FIRST. NOT EVERYBODY DOES.

BUT WHEN I WAS RELEASED, I APPLIED AT SOBER LIVING

HOUSES.

I ALSO SET A GOAL TO ATTEND A MEETING A DAY. AND IN

CONTRAST TO WHERE I USED TO LIVE (RHODE ISLAND), THIS

WAS A PRACTICAL GOAL FOR A GUY WITH NO DRIVERS LI-

CENSE!!! IN ORANGE COUNTY, GOING TO MEETINGS EVERY

DAY WAS ACTUALLY EASY BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY AND

YOU CAN GO AS EARLY OR AS LATE AS YOU WANT. I FOUND

ONE MEETING AT A BEACH, AND THIS WAS EASY TO GET TO BY

BIKE. IN FACT, IT QUICKLY BECAME MY HOME MEETING AS I

WAS STILL INELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR A DRIVERS LICENSE ANY-

WHERE DUE TO MY DRIVING RECORD.……

AS A NATIVE OF THE GREATER BOSTON AREA, WHERE MY HEAVY DRINKING TOOK UNIMAGINABLE TOLLS, I NEVER IMAGINED A MEET-ING OF AA WOULD BE HELD REGULARLY AT THE BEACH. IT MADE ATTENDANCE FOR ME EASY AS A NEWCOMER. AND AS I SAW MORE AND MORE MEETING MEMBERS GET MONTHLY CHIPS, I SAT THERE IN AWE…IN AWE THAT PEOPLE COULD STAY AWAY FROM THE DRINK FOR TWO MONTHS, THREE MONTHS, EVEN SIX MONTHS, BECAUSE FOR ME IF I COULDN’T STAY AWAY FROM THE DRINK, I MIGHT NEVER BE ABLE TO DRIVE A CAR—LEGALLY—AGAIN. ABOUT THREE WEEKS AFTER I WAS RELEASED FROM TREATMENT, I JOINED A SOBER LIVING HOUSE, AND YEAH, MY JOURNEY THRU SO-BER TIMES BECAME MORE INTENSE. MY ROOMMATE WAS IN THE PROGRAM, AS WERE THE EIGHT OTHER HOUSEMATES. WE AP-PROACHED EACH DAY WITH VIGILANCE KNOWING SOME HAD TO BE UP BEFORE DAWN FOR WORK WHILE OTHERS CRANKED OUT THEIR CHORE—THE KITCHEN FLOOR OR THE GARBAGE—RIGHT AROUND DAWN…THERE WAS A DISTINCT PRIDE IN CHECKING OFF THE CHORE SHEET EACH DAY BECAUSE WE KNEW THE NEXT THING WAS TO GET OUR MEETING IN THAT DAY, AS WELL. FOR ME, I KNEW I HAD TO GET ON MY BIKE BY 7:15 TO MAKE THE 8 O’CLOCK BEACH MEETING THERE I WOULD RE KINDLE ACQUAINTENCES FROM PREVIOUS DAYS TO CHECK THEIR SOBRIETY AGAINST MINE, AND USUALLY GET A GOOD LAUGH. I ALSO GAINED A SENSE FOR THE MEETING AND THE CHARACTER IT TOOK ON DEPENDING ON THE DAY. MONDAYS WOULD ATTRACT A MINIMAL CROWD OF 10 WITH MAYBE SIX MORE GATHERED ON THE STONE WALL, THEN ATTEDNACE WOULD CREEP UP EACH DAY WITH SATURDAY AND SUNDAY ATTRACTING THE LARG-EST NUMBERS. IT BECAME A PHENOMENON TO WATCH THE MEMBERSHIP CELE-BRATE A ONE YEAR CHIP. THERE WOULD BE A BIRTHDAY CARD PASSED AROUND WITH PASSIONATE PRAISE AND A SIGNATURE TO LET YOU KNOW EACH MEMBERS OVERALL LOVE FOR THE CELEBRAT-ING MEMBER, SOMETIMES THE CELEBRATION WOULD CARRY OVER TO A RESTAURANT……..

WE WOULD TACKLE THE CHORE ASSIGNMENT BY 5:30 PM ON THURSDAYS, WE WOULD MEET AS A HOUSE AT NIGHT TO SHARE EACH OTHERS RECOVERY PROGRAM. I THINK WHAT KEPT THE HOUSE TOGETHER MANY TIMES IS THE TEAMWORK THAT WENT INTO THE CHORES. ROOMMATES, FOR EXAMPLE, OFTEN COVERED FOR OTH-ERS. WHEN A HOUSE MEMBER EARNED A ONE YEAR CHIP, THE HOUSE HELPED RECOGNIZE THE MEMBER WITH CAKE AND ICE CREAM……

AND WHEN SOMEONE DID THE UNSPEAKABLE…USED AGAIN….. THE HOUSE WOULD WORK AS A TEAM TO HELP THE MEMBER REJOIN THE HOUSE AND STAY CLEAN AND SOBER. STAYING SOBER CAN RE-ALLY BE A PROCESS OF ATTENDING MEETING, LIVING THE DEAL IN SOBER LIVING AND STAYING IN TOUCH WITH YOUR CLEAN AND SOBER FRIENDS…. ..

ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I WANTED TO PICK UP? YES, OF COURSE! OFTEN THOSE WERE NIGHTMARES I WOKE UP FROM IN THE COM-FORT OF A WARM BED, NOT A COLD PARK BENCH OR A DIRTY ALLEY. ARE THERE DAYS WHEN THE PHONE FEELS MUCH TOO HEAVY TO CALL A FRIEND? YEH BUT I GET OVER IT BECAUSE I KNOW THE FRIEND WILL CALL ME BACK REAL SOON!! I JUST KNOW THE OTHER ROUTE IS WRONG & I COME UP WITH OTHER ROUTINES OR EXERCISES TO AVOID PICKING UP A DRINK. Submitted by: Thomas

Orange County Hospitals & Institutions Committee

H & I Panels are like the roots of AA….

Taking meetings to alcoholics who are confined in hospitals or institutions…..those that need us most!!

To become a member of the orange county hospital & institutions committee, a volunteer must have one (1) year of continuous sobriety, attend three (3) consecutive monthly business meetings and attend a new member orientation. You will receive a punch card at your 1

st meeting to confirm your attendance.

The monthly business meetings are the 2nd

Sunday of every month at: The Garden Grove Alano Club 9845 Belfast Dr., Garden Grove, CA 714.534.2244

The Orientation meeting for institutions is at 3:15 pm and the meeting is from 4:00 – 5:00 pm The Orientation meeting for hospitals is at 5:15 pm and the meeting is from 6:00 – 7:00 pm

The screening process for institutions is deep – it is difficult to get a panel if you have a criminal record – applications must be completed and valid identification is required. Some institutions require a TB test to protect the inmates. If you aren’t ready for a panel of your own, you can still participate by sharing your experience, strength and hope on someone else’s panel. All clearances would still be required for the institution panels. For more information contact Terri S. 562.712.6677 NOCCO H&I Liaison
