FROM THE EDITOR OK. The Calender says December so it must be. I just don’t know where the year went. I remember looking forward to the dry weather. Anyway, we are stuck with it.We ‘enjoyed’ 4 public holidays in November making up the total of 17 excluding government days off and tolerance days. The employers didn’t ‘enjoy’ it quite as much.I googled ‘public holidays’ and Timor Leste comes in a very credible equal 5th with China/Hong Kong. The winner was Sri Lanka with 25, India 21 then Trinidad & Tobago, Columbia and Philippines with 18. It is within our grasp. We are only four birthdays and/or anniversaries away from equal 1st. Time will tell. Hang on. I’ve got it. Diwali Hindu Festival of Lights lasts 5 days. Takes us to 22.A Hallmark occasion when the new, free clinic was opened at Timor Plaza. See the social pages. It is another Jape success story. The Melbourne Cup was run first Tuesday of November. The race that stops a nation apparently stops a fair chunk of the world. See the social pages. The significant Santa Cruz day (National Youth Day) has passed with both sadness and optimism for the youth of Timor Leste.Well the next edition will be in obviously the new year after the bedlam of 11 day early deadline and despatch of the January edition to bypass the headaches of continuing ‘normal business’ during the festive bun fight.

As per usual, if you are going somewhere, safe travelling.Till next time. Cheers ! Leith Carroll

HOPING TO REVIVE ITS FORTUNES , APPLE LEAPT INTO THE ARENA OF DIGITAL DEVICES AND TOOK A BIG BITE OUT OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY.

By the late 1990s computer manufacturer Apple was struggling. With a market shar of less than 10 per cent, management recognised that the time for change had come. They knew consumers of the future would own series of electronic devices tied into their home computer, so they began looking at the range of digital device on the market. The company had missed the boat on video cameras, still cameras and hand-held organizers-other manufactures already had these markets stitched up. Then Apple found the opportunity it had been looking for. Having produced software for playing and storing digital music, it soon realised the digital music players on the market were far from user-friendly. MP3 players of the time were, in fact, awful. Products that relied on hard drivers to store music were too big, while those that used Flash memory chips could only hold a few tracks. In both cases it was a slow process transferring songs from computer to player, and navigation of player menis was difficult. Meanwhile, computer engineer Tony Fadell, a former employee of Philips, had an idea for a new style of MP3 player. Faster and sleeker, it would be linked to its own digital music store. Fadell shopped the idea around to Phillips and other com-panies but none was interested. Then he pitched the idea to Apple. Legend says that in early 2001 Fadell was on the sky slopes in Vail, Colorado, when he received a call from Jon Rubinstein, Apple’s chief hard-ware engineer. Rubinstein gave Fadell the go-ahead to begin work on his digital music player, with one proviso: it had to be in stores by Christmas. After cutting his holiday short, Fadell and his team of thirty-five engineers used as the central component a version of a microprocessor which had previously powered mobile phones, and the original iPod was completed in just six months. Apple announced its new product on 23 October 2001, and the original five gigabyte iPod was priced at US$399, an amount slammed by critics. But consumers, who were hungry for an aesthetically pleasing and functional pocket sized music player, didn’t care about cost, and in the two months before the end of the year 125,000 iPods were solid. The gadget made music more accessible by amalgamating all of it’s owner’s tracks on one device, and everything in its design suggested a superior listening experience. Within months, the while plastic and metal box had reversed Apple’s fortunes and transformed it from a company associated with computers to one associated with music.

Boy is this a simple one to say and a really difficult one to live up to. I do appreciate that it’s a tough one, but I know you can do it. It takes a simple shift of vision, from being the sort of person who acts in a certain way to being a different sort of person who acts in a different sort of way. Look, no matter how rough it gets you are never going to:

● take revenge ● act badly ● be very, very angry● hurt anyone ● act without thinking ● act rashly● be aggressive.

That’s it, the bottom line. You are going to maintain the moral high ground at all times. You are going to behave honestly, decently, kindly, forgivingly, nicely (whatever that means) no matter what the provocation. No matter what the challenge thrown at you. No matter how unfairly they behave. No matter how badly they behave. You will not retaliate in like kind. You will carry on being good and civilized and morally irreproachable. You manners will be impeccable. You language moderated and dignified. There is nothing they can do or say that will make you deviate from this line. Yes, I know it’s difficult at times. I know when the rest of the world are behaving appallingly, and you have to carry on taking it on the chin without giving in to tour desire to floor them with a savage word, it’s really, really tough. When people are being horrid to you it’s natural to want to get your own back and last out. Don’t. Once this rough time has passed, you will be so proud of yourself for keeping the moral high ground, that it will taste a thousand times better than revenge ever would. I know revenge is tempting, but you won’t go there. Not now, not ever. Why? Because if you do you’ll be sinking to their level, you’ll be at one with the beasts instead of the angels(see Rule 9), because it demeans you and cheapens you, because you will regret it and lastly because if you do, then you’re no Rules Player. Revenge is for losers. Taking and keeping the moral high ground is the only way to be. It doesn’t mean you’re a pushover or a wimp. It just means that any action you do take will be honest and dignified and clean.

The Man Rules I may have published this before, though not for a while. I ask the ladies to take it in the light hearted comedic sense it is intended. We always hear ‘the rules’ From the female side. Now here are the rules from the male side. These are our rules Please note.. these are all numbered ‘1 ‘ ON PURPOSE! 1. Men are NOT mind readers. 1. Learn to work the toilet seat. You’re a big girl. If it’s up, put it down. We need it up, you need it down. You don’t hear us complaining about you leaving it down. 1. Sunday sports It’s like the full moon or the changing of the tides. Let it be. 1. Crying is blackmail. 1. Ask for what you want. Let us be clear on this one: Subtle hints do not work! Strong hints do not work! Obvious hints do not work! Just say it! 1. Yes and No are perfectly acceptable answers to almost every question. 1. Come to us with a problem only if you want help solving it. That’s what we do. Sympathy is what your girlfriends are for. 1. Anything we said 6 months ago is inadmissible in an argument. In fact, all comments become null and void after 7 Days. 1. If you think you’re fat, you probably are. Don’t ask us. 1. If something we said can be interpreted two ways and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, we meant the other one. 1. You can either ask us to do something or tell us how you want it done. Not both. If you already know best how to do it, just do it yourself. 1. Whenever possible, Please say whatever you have to say during commercials. 1. Christopher Columbus did NOT need directions and neither do we. 1.ALL men see in only 16 colours, like Windows default settings. Peach, for example, is a fruit, not A colour. Pumpkin is also a fruit. We have no idea what mauve is. 1. If it itches, it will be scratched We do that. 1. If we ask what is wrong and you say ‘nothing,’ We will act like nothing’s wrong. We know you are lying, but it is just not worth the hassle. 1. If you ask a question you don’t want an answer to, Expect an answer you don’t want to hear. 1. When we have to go somewhere, absolutely anything you wear is fine... Really. 1. Don’t ask us what we’re thinking about unless you are prepared to discuss such topics as baseball or motor sports. 1. You have enough clothes. 1. You have too many shoes. 1. I am in shape. Round IS a shape ! 1. Thank you for reading this. Yes, I know, I have to sleep on the couch tonight. But did you know men really don’t mind that? It’s like camping. Pass this to as many men AND women as you can to give them ALL a laugh.

FEATURES STORIESMyanmar jails foreign journalists for flying drone Myanmar has jailed

two foreign journalists for two months for flying a drone near the country’s parliament. Cameraman Lau Hon Meng from Singapore and reporter Mok Choy Lin of Malaysia were detained in October while filming a documentary for Turkish TV. Their driver, Hla Tin, and interpreter, Aung Naing Soe, both from Myanmar, were also jailed. Myanmar-Turkey relations are already strained over comments made by Turkey’s president on the Rohingya crisis. Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused the

Myanmar authorities of carrying out genocide against the ethnic minority. The men were first investigated for breaching rules on importing banned goods without a licence, an offence that could lead to a three year jail term. But the judge instead opted for a fresh charge of violating aircraft laws, which carries up to a three month sentence. The two men pleaded guilty to the lesser charge, but a new hearing is scheduled for 16 November, to determine whether all four will face the charges of import-export rule violation. “The detainees admitted that they committed the crime, hoping they would only be fined, so it shocked us when the judge sentenced them to two months,” said defence lawyer Khin Maung Zaw, according to Reuters. The Turkish broadcasting station, TRT World, said that Myanmar authorities had been informed about the planned filming activities and the schedule. “Our crew wanted to film the parliament building in the capital with a drone, after conducting an interview with a member of parliament. They were detained by security officials before flying the drone” TRT said in a statement. BBC

A paralysed child from India’s 45-day journey for surgery After an accident that left her paralysed, an eight-year-old girl spent more than a month travelling hundreds of kilometres in search of a hospital that could treat her. BBC Marathi’s Mayuresh Konnur retraces her journey from a poor tribal village in the western Indian state of Maharashtra to Mumbai, the state capital. Raja and Shanti Walvi were grazing cattle when their daughter, Ravita, fell from a tree - a fall of 25ft (7.6m). They don’t know exactly when it happened. The Walvis are tribal farmers who only speak their native language, Bhil, and cannot read or write. But according to an estimate by the hospital where she was admitted on 18 October, the accident was early in September. That would mean it took one-and-a-half months for Ravita’s parents to get her to a hospital equipped to deal with what she had: a spinal fracture. ‘Bambulance’ The Walvis live in a remote village in a district called Nandurbar at the foot of the Satpura hills. Large parts of the district are still not connected by trains or roads. After the accident, they carried an unconscious Ravita in a “bambulance”, a blanket strung up on bamboo sticks, which can be carried like a cot. It’s a common contraption in places such as these where the only way to get to a hospital is to start out on foot. The Walvis walked for nearly 30 minutes to take a ride in a “passenger jeep”, a taxi service used by people in remote villages. They went to the nearest primary health centre, 11km (seven miles) away. Mr Walvi says the doctor dressed Ravita’s wound but suggested she be taken to the civil hospital in Nandurbar, the district headquarters, for further treatment. So the Walvis took another ride, the “bambulance” in tow, for 80km. This was just the first of five hospitals they would visit over the next 45 days or so - not uncommon in India’s overburdened public healthcare system. Hospital after hospital Mr Walvi said Ravita spent 10 days in Nandurbar but she didn’t get better. So he took her home, although the doctors advised them to go to a city 200km away in the neighbouring state of Gujarat. But Mr Walvi said he couldn’t afford it. “I was frustrated,” he added. “We did not know what to do next.” Ravita could only move her hands. She barely ate and she wasn’t talking. But they could tell she was in pain. So they decided to take her to a private hospital 70km from their home. But Mr Walvi said doctors at the hospital told him they couldn’t treat Ravita. They visited yet another public hospital, only to be told to go to Mumbai. Mr Walvi says one of the doctors arranged for an ambulance that would take them and gave him money for the journey. The ambulance took them to the King Edward Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, where Ravita was admitted. “But they could not understand our language and we couldn’t understand theirs,” Mr Walvi said. Four days later, they left with Ravita because Mr Walvi said he saw no improvement. They decided to go home but when they asked passersby how to go to Nandurbar, no one understood them. They spent hours wandering around Mumbai asking for directions to Nandurbar before police found them. After Mr Walvi somehow managed to explain his situation, the police took them to a public hospital, where they met a female constable, who knew the language the Walvis spoke. She explained to them that the doctors wanted them to go to Gokuldas Tejpal (GT) hospital in the city, because it was the only public hospital in the city with a neurological team that could treat Ravita. Doctors at GT told the BBC that the fall had broken vertebrae in Ravita’s spine, robbing the lower part of her body of all sensation. They said they couldn’t operate on her right away because she was malnourished. She finally underwent surgery on 3 November. “We cannot expect complete recovery immediately,” Dr Mukund Tayade, chief superintendent of the hospital, told the BBC. “But physiotherapy will rehabilitate her.” He said she had to be brought to Mumbai because hospitals in Nandurbar or Dhule do not have neurosurgeons on staff to operate on patients with spinal injuries. The delay in getting to Mumbai did not worsen Ravita’s injury, according to Dr Tayade. He said her spine had fractured the moment she fell from the tree. But, he added, she need not have suffered as much as she did because they would have relieved her of pain. BBC

ARIES: BIRTHDAYS FROM 21 MARCH to 20 APRILGeneral Highlights: Saturn has been in Sagittarius, your 9th house, on and off since 2014. This has been a time of expansion and learning, but also one of discipline. You learned how to be adventurous with restrictions, and also how to be free without escaping responsibilities of daily life. You have come to terms with what has held you back in the past, and are now able to recognize how to let yourself be free while living in this world of limitations. The theme for this aspect for you has been learning how to live with integrity. These learning experiences will change on December 20th, when Saturn moves into your 10th house of work and professional accomplishments. This indicates an upcoming career shift. You may see more demands and higher expectations of you at your job, or you may choose to take your work more seriously. While this can be a challenging time, because you are such a go-getter, this is generally a positive aspect for you, Aries.TAURUS: FROM 21 APRIL to 21 MAYGeneral Highlights: The majority of planets are forecasted to be in the upper half of your chart this month, dear Taurus. All of the planets will be in the upper half of your chart starting on the 9th. On the 14th, the Moon will also be in the southern hemisphere and will remain here until the 27th of this month. These positions will manifest as growth in your career sector and successful achievements. You will be more concerned with your objectives in your professional life and social life, as this hemisphere is all about your outward focus. Your personal and emotional life will take a back seat this month, which is a welcomed change for you! On the 9th, Mars moves into your 7th house of partnerships. This relates to one-on-one relationships of all kinds, such as business, romantic, friendships, and even enemy relationships.GEMINI: BIRTHDAYS FROM 22 MAY to 21 JUNEGeneral Highlights:It is an opportune time for social and love developments, dear Gemini! Many planets have transitioned into the upper half of your chart, and there are quite a few transiting through your 7th house of love this month. Venus transitions into your 7th house of love and partnerships on the 1st of December. This is where Venus loves to be! This house represents harmony, beauty, and all relationships in life. As a Gemini, you are naturally drawn to others. Because you are always seeking that twin connection, Venus in this house is extremely lucky for you. You may certainly reconnect with old friends, make new ones, and thrive in all of your social relationships. Even though you are great at being independent, this alignment will make you feel extra “lovey” with those around you. It is indeed a wonderful time to find a special someone, if you are a single Gemini.CANCER: BIRTHDAYS FROM 22 JUNE to 23 JULYGeneral Highlights: Most of the planetary power is in the western sector of your chart this month. You will be happy, lovely Leo, that Saturn leaves your 5th house of fun into your 6th house of work and responsibilities on the 20th of this month. This is where Saturn should be! The 5th house and Saturn really clash, and you may have been feeling out of your element for the past 2 years. The 5th house mirrors your fun, pleasure seeking personality, so you and Saturn may not have hit it off so well. This is why Saturn’s move will perk you up in the best of ways! You may be inclined towards a more comfortable lifestyle this month, putting emphasis on staying at home, warm and cozy. You might feel nostalgic about your past, and childhood memories may come up without warning. It is important that you stay connected with family members from your early life, if these relationships are healthy and stable. Venus loves making everything even more beautiful, so find a project or a way to redecorate.LIBRA: BIRTHDAYS FROM 24 SEPTEMBER to 23 OCTOBERGeneral Highlights:Venus will be in your 3rd house from December 1st until the 25th, lovely Libra. Venus in the 3rd house of communication indicates that you will have a magical way with words amidst your loved ones. Venus is harmonious and beautiful, so she ensures that communication is exactly this way; peaceful, loving, and true. Venus is your ruling planet, so her alignment this month is very in tune with your ideals. Venus may also open you up to feeling more creative this month, especially in the areas of language, writing, and verbal expression. You may feel drawn to learning a new language, most often one of the romance languages, such as Italian, French, and Spanish. If you enjoy creative writing, Venus will inspire you here to tap into your skills as a poet or novelist! Write anything and everything down that you can this month, because every word is predicted to be even more beautiful than the next.SCORPIO: BIRTHDAYS FROM 24 OCTOBER to 22 NOVEMBERGeneral Highlights: On the 1st, Venus will enter your money house. Watch your impulsive behaviors throughout the month, as Venus might just play a trick on you! On the other hand, you will also be generous and will give freely to those important people in your life. Venus, who is also the planet of love, will make you attracted to people who are wealthy. You need this financial security in order to feel loved now, and this may seep into your dating life. You need a partner now who is simple, genuine, and hardworking to feel emotionally balanced.SAGITTARIUS: BIRTHDAYS FROM 23 NOVEMBER to 23 DECEMBERGeneral Highlights: With several planets in your house, you are the center of attention in the skies this month! Your health is destined to be excellent most of the month, so you can celebrate until your heart’s content! You will be drawn to expensive wines, champagne, gourmet food, and chocolate during December. Despite this, you will definitely be more focused on personal appearance, as the Sun in your house makes you a little more vain than usual, so you might be watching your figure over the next few weeks as well. You will be extremely attractive to others, inside and out, and have a seemingly magnetic personality overall. You may receive a lot of attention from others romantically interested in you, but these interactions are not predicted to pan out long-term. Still, enjoy yourself, let go, and have fun, sassy Sagit-tarius! Saturn has also been in your sign in the 1st house since 2014.CAPRICORN: BIRTHDAYS FROM 22 DECEMBER to 20 JANUARYGeneral Highlights: The planetary concentration is now at the most eastern position in your chart this month. This symbolizes your personal identity, independence, and necessities. You will focus a lot on yourself and the changes you need to make for your personal happiness. Your career goals will also be redefined, in addition to how you see the future in general. Venus will be in your 12th house starting on the 1st until the 25th of December. If you are in a relationship, you will feel extremely tied to your partner and often confuse your needs with theirs. This is the house of the subconscious, so all of your deepest fears and desires will manifest this month. In some way, you might feel conflicted in love, and will need to express your feelings clearly to understand what is going on. You can get hurt quite easily if you are in love, feeling much more vulnerable than usual, especially if your affections go unreciprocated.AQUARIUS: BIRTHDAYS 21 JANUARY to 19 FEBRUARYGeneral Highlights: On the 1st, Venus transits to your 11th house of friendships, and she will remain here until December 25th. If you are a single Aquarius, you have a good chance of meeting someone special through a mutual friend. You will especially enjoy going out this month, and the social scene is ready to take you on! Instead of feeling connected with romance, you will focus more on friendships and the love within your platonic relationships. You realize that you love being around others, regardless of sexual attraction, and it is important for you to feel this love flowing both ways. If you are an Aquarius in a relationship, chances are you and your partner will do a lot of double dating this month! You will also emphasize being around others with your partner, rather than just alone time with the two of you. Overall, the month will be social, exciting, and quite friendly, dear Aquarius! Mercury retrogrades in your 11th house starting on the 3rd.PISCES: BIRTHDAYS: 20 FEBRUARY to 20 MARCHGeneral Highlights: On the 1st, Venus enters your 10th house of career and professional accomplishments, and she will remain here until December 25th. You might find yourself attracted to someone who is older than you, as you see love and experience go hand in hand this month. You might meet a person of interest in your career, via a networking event or through a colleague. You will be able to attract groups of people as well, and it may be a great time for you to host a work party or speak at a public event. Venus in this house also indicates that if you are looking to make a career change, you might consider the possibility of a profession in the arts, or at least something more creative than your current work. You will get a spark of ideas and artistic intuition, which is quite natural for you, artsy Pisces. You are certain to have harmonious relationships and interactions with others in the professional setting, and will charm clients and coworkers alike. While you will concentrate on your appearance at work more than your individual accomplishments, you will get the job done well and especially thrive on teamwork.

THE ULTIMATE EXPERIENCE - from a talk by Prem Rawat [Part 3 of 3]

A MIRROR This is what I offer people - a mirror. What else can you give to someone who has everything? You have everything! That which is within you is, by its very nature, divine. By its very existence, it is the most beautiful symphony. By its very existence, it is the most beautiful play ever written. You are the actor, and the most incredible script has been written for you. There is love. There’s a little bit of action. There’s a little bit of clarity and a little bit of confusion. It’s an amazing script. How well are you playing it? How well do you know your lines? How well do you know this play? Do you need somebody in the orchestra pit to read you the script? Many of you know about the people who are whispering your lines in your life?

And when two of them start speaking at the same time, what happens? Family feud? “I want you to be this way,” “I want you to be that way,” “I want you to do this for me,” “I want you to do that for me,” “I trusted you.” No. You expected. Don’t bring trust into it. You don’t even know what trust is. Trust is meant to be for the coming and going of your breath - that it will come and it will go. Trust, not an expectation. Will tomorrow come? Are you expecting it to come? Or are you trusting it to come? Think about it. If it doesn’t come, there’s nothing you can do about it. You can’t argue. You can’t complain. Wise are the ones who begin to understand the value of what they have been given while it’s still being given. Understanding the value of something when it is gone is too easy. Begin to acknowledge your existence in the simplest way possible - by going within. Not from ideas, but from your understanding. Not measuring with the scales of what you do not have. Understand what you do have. Because what you do have is right here within you, and it’s everything. And when I say everything, I mean everything.

THE TIE BUSINESSPeople say: “I’m a father.” No, you’re a human being. They say: “I’m a mother.” No, you’re a human being. But we don’t see human beings; we see everything else. We think a person is important because he’s wearing a tie. I know this tie business really well. The tie is an amazing tool. Put it on, and you’re somebody; take it off, and people won’t even hold an elevator door for you. We have trained ourselves to see the differences - our colour, our height. The taller you are, the more likely you are to be successful. At what? Banging your head? You will do a lot of that. We look at all the differences. See the similarity. You were born. That you are alive is a blessing unparalleled. You exist. Understand that.

REMINDINGI’m talking about the presence of a beauty that is inside of you, through which you have everything and without which you have nothing. You are so fortunate that you are alive. That is simple. That is real. I just wanted to remind you of that because in times of trouble, we forget the most important thing. And that’s what gets us into trouble. You know this. You know everything I have said. You know that peace isbeautiful. Now the time has come to actually feel that peace in your life. Nobody is too young, and nobody is too old. Now is the time to understand.Understand. Then you won’t need all the explanations. When understanding kicks in, that’s all you need. In life, know. In life, understand. Let every step be real. Not somebody’s instruction from the orchestra pit: “Now say this.” Because this is a matter of life. You have one life. One existence. One incredible gift that you have been given. I love to learn. I love to understand. A long time ago, someone showed mehow to look within, and I did. And I’m happy I did. I’m thankful I did. I’m thankful for every day. And I’m still learning the art of unlearning how to be distracted. It is crucial to remember what is important. The more important something is, the more important it is to remember it. And you must also understand how likely you are to forget it. That’s how we are. It is my privilege to remind you. It is my privilege, my joy, my honour, to go around the world and tell people about the possibility of being in peace. It is a message of the heart. I don’t prepare my speeches. If you had asked me what I was going to talk about when I came here, I wouldn’t have known. I come, I open my heart, and with a sense of clarity, a sense of understanding, and hopefully with humility, I present what I have to say. I have nothing to sell. Some people always think: “Oh, there must be some hidden motive.” Do you live like that? Every time you’re nice to somebody, is there some hidden motive? Your life, your breath, your existence is good. It has been given to you. The motive is kindness. Peace is not an abstract concept. Peace is a feeling. Peace is real. It isn’t about a flower giving off a beautiful blue hue. It is about feeling a feeling inside and saying: “Yes!” because you have felt it. Not like that person who says: “I think I ate the sandwich,” but like the one who says: “I know I ate the sandwich,” and being happy because you enjoyed your sandwich. Not walking around wondering: “Did I really eat that sandwich? Where is that sandwich?” There’s no room for that in this life.

Duck Quacks Don’t Echo

In 2003 a popular myth – that a duck’s doesn’t echo – was scientifically debunked at Salford University in northwest England, at the annual meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science.I was asked a question about this myth a few years ago on my science talk –back show Triple J radio. I wasn’t able to answer it because I hadn’t read any research on the topic. However, on the face of it, it sounded like a ridiculous claim for three reasons. First, each of the many species of duck hat its own different quack, in fact, to make it more complicated, there are gender differences in quacks. For example, the female Mallard duck has a softer, rasping quack.Second, most species of duck spend much of their time on the water- usually out in the open. Because there are not many hard reflective surfaces near most bodies of water, you don’t get many echoes, anyway. Third, why should the quack of a duck (alone, of all sounds ever made on our planet) have some magical property that makes it echo-free?Then a triple J listener rang in with what the Intelligence Community calls ‘ground truth’. His Family owned a duck farm, and he assured me that the quack of their ducks most certainly did echo off the walls of the sheds. And this is where my understanding of duck’ quacks rested, until Professor Trevor Cox from the Acoustic Research Centre at the University of Salford reported his research. The focus of his study was Daisy the Duck. There was nothing special about Daisy – Professor Cox just rang local duck farms until he found one (Stockley Farm) that would lend him a willing duck. Professor Cox has worked with problems in sound for many years. For example, you’ve probably heard the sound from the loud speakers at a railway station echoing away until it’s almost unrecognisable. Professor Cox is the guy who can create a virtual prototype of a railway station inside a computer, and then adjust the design until you can hear the sound clearly. He can do the same for concert halls and even restaurants- in fact this work could save you from having to shout across the restaurant table just to heard. And he’s also worked on using trees to absorb the sound of traffic and aeroplanes. Being an expert in sound, he knew what to do with Daisy and her quack. First, he got her to quack in an anechoic chamber – a specially designed room that deadens echoes. Her quack sound like a regular quack, but a little softer than he expected. Second, he got Daisy to repeat her quack in a reverberation chamber, which artificially enhances the echoes. The quack did indeed echo- in fact, it sounded rather sinister. Third, he used a computer to simulate her quack in a concert hall-and sure enough, there was a small echo. And the same happened when he simulated Daisy’s quack as she flew in front of a virtual cliff inside his computer. But he noticed two odd things First, Daisy’s quack didn’t sharply (like a hand clap), but tailed of softly. It faded away gently and gradually, making it hard to tell the difference between the original quack and the echo. Second, because her quack actually quite soft, the echo was even softer. The combination of these two factors means that even if you do get en echo, it is lost in the tail end of the original quack. Professor Cox is hoping to use this knowledge to improve echo-ridden environments, such as railway stations and restaurant. And I guess that the original myth about the sound of the duck’s quack being echo-free is jus quackers…

Ducks Have AccentsAccording to Dr Victoria de Rijke from Middlesex University ducks have different ‘accents’, depending on what kind of noise they are subjected to in their local area. Dr de Rijke lectures in English, with special interest in phonetics (how language sounds to the ear). She is also the leader of the Quack Project. Her team records the sounds of children with different native language (e.g. English, Vietnamese, Arabic and Tamil) coping the sounds of common animals, such as ducks. In an interview with The Guardian newspaper, she said, London ducks have the stress of city life and a lot of noise to complete with, like sirens, horn, planes and trains. The cockney (London) quack is like a shout and laugh.’ Therefore cockney ducks place their quack energy into the part of the sound spectrum where the background noise is quiet, so that other city ducks can hear them more easily. Dr de Rijke to roam in and their quite surroundings make all of a difference. The Cornish ducks made longer and more relaxed sounds, much more chilled out. They sound like they are giggling. So it is like humans: cockneys have short and open vowels, whereas the Cornish have longer vowels and speak fairly slowly.’ She now plans to study duck’ quacks in Newcastle, Liverpool and Ireland.

Louvre Abu Dhabi: UAE museum unveiled by Emmanuel Macron French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled a £1bn newly-built museum in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. The new Louvre, built over the past 10 years, holds 600 artworks permanently and 300 loaned from France. Praised by critics, the building boasts a latticed dome designed to allow the desert sun to filter through. It holds art and items related to history and religion from around the world and Mr Macron called it a “bridge between civilisations”. He said: “Those who seek to say Islam is the destruction

of other religions are liars.” The project, agreed between France and Abu Dhabi in 2007, was initially intended to open in 2012 but was delayed by the global financial crisis and plummeting oil prices, sending the final cost soaring over its original $654m (then £340m) budget. In addition, the museum is paying France hundreds of millions of dollars for the use of the Louvre name and for loans of artworks and managerial advice. The museum has attracted its share of controversy over concerns about the welfare of the workers constructing the building. But critics have declared the finished building - the first to open in a series of projects conceived by UAE authorities at creating a cultural oasis on the Abu Dhabi island of Saadiyat - a “mesmerising” success, if with a “touch of bling”. The Paris Louvre is a landmark in the French capital and the world’s largest art museum, with millions of visitors a year. The Abu Dhabi building, designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, brings to mind an Arab medina (an ancient quarter of a city). None of its 55 rooms, including 23 permanent galleries, is alike. The latticed dome protects visitors from the scalding heat, while allowing the rooms to glow with natural light. On show are works from around the world - from established European masters including Van Gogh, Gaugin and Picasso, to Americans such as James Abbott McNeill Whistler (his painting Whistler’s Mother, above) and the modern Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. The museum has also joined force with Arab institutions who have loaned 28 prized works. Among the priceless artefacts on show are a statue of a sphinx dating back to the 6th Century BC and a frieze depicting figures from the Koran. The museum’s doors open to the public on Saturday - with all entrance tickets, priced 60 dirhams ($16.80), sold out. Emirati officials will hope the magnificence of the building will put concerns about the wellbeing of its workers and controversy about delays and overrunning costs in the shade. BBC

DANCE IS THERAPEUTIC?

By: Ângela Rodrigues

Dance has been present in human society since antiquity. It was used to express feelings and intentions in worship and healing acts, and even as a mean of expelling evil spirits. It was and it is also used, till today, as artistic expression.

But is dance also beneficial as a psychological therapy?

Several studies prove that it’s truth. Dance has been used, since the 60’s, as a therapy in psychotic patients cases, in sensory and motor deficient children (blind, deaf, autistic, with behavioural disorders, etc.), in terminal ill patients, improving their life quality, and in prevention (risk behaviours, dysfunctional families, etc.).

Dance promotes mental health and offers big benefits. But how?

It reduces the isolation and stimulates relationships between people, helping to create new friendships and to accept and value the differences. It increases self-esteem (the positive thought about ourselves - “I can do it!”) and decreases anxiety and depression.

It’s proven that when we dance our brain produces endorphins, the happiness hormone. Serotonin is also produced - a substance that acts on the brain and regulates humour, sleep, heart rate, movements, intellectual functions, etc. These substances will contribute to relax and decrease stress, improving the physical and psychological condition.

Dance still increases and improves personal awareness and autonomy, enables connexion with the body memory, unlocking oppressed feelings and thoughts (releases tensions and unloads negativity), improve communication, helps us to know ourselves better emotionally and to discover potentialities, develops cognitive abilities, motivation, concentration and memory.

Dance promotes a general well-being. Some scholars think that dance can fortify the immune system and help to prevent diseases.

Dance can be practiced by anyone who wants to improve life quality and also by those suffering from pathologies such as anxiety, emotional and relationship disorders, behaviour problems, development delays, low self-esteem, dementias and others. It doesn’t have age. It can be practiced by children, teenagers, young people, adults and old ones.Like all good practice it should be carried out regularly to produce effect.

Take care of your health!Increase your well-being and prevent psychological and physical illness.Dance, at least, once a week!

‘Zombie’ star survived going supernova It’s the celestial equivalent of a horror film adversary: a star that just wouldn’t stay dead. When most stars go supernova, they die in a single blast, but astronomers have found a star that survived not one, but five separate explosions. The “zombie” star kept erupting for nearly two years - six times longer than the duration of a typical supernova. An international team details their results in the academic journal Nature. “This supernova breaks everything we thought we knew about how they work. It’s the biggest puzzle I’ve encountered in almost a

decade of studying stellar explosions,” said co-author Iair Arcavi, a postdoctoral fellow at Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) who is based in California. The mysterious object, iPTF14hls, was picked up in September 2014 by a wide-field camera astronomy survey. Astronomers identified it as an exploding star in January 2015; everything about the discovery seemed normal at first. In common types of supernova, a blast at the centre of the star ejects material at high speed into surrounding space. The expansion of this material releases energy, causing the object to shine brightly for up to 100 days (about four months) before it finally fades. It soon became clear this exploding star wasn’t conforming to expectations. For one thing, it didn’t fade, but shone brightly for 600 days - nearly two years. What’s more, the astronomers found that its brightness varied by as much as 50% on an irregular timescale, as if it was exploding over and over again. And, rather than cooling down as expected, the object maintained a near-constant temperature of about 5,700C. Intriguingly, by combing through archived data, scientists discovered an explosion that occurred in 1954 in exactly the same location. This could suggest that the star somehow survived that explosion, only to detonate again in 2014. The object may be the first known example of a Pulsational Pair Instability Supernova. “According to this theory, it is possible that this was the result of star so massive and hot that it generated antimatter in its core,” said co-author Daniel Kasen, from the University of California, Berkeley. “That would cause the star to go violently unstable, and undergo repeated bright eruptions over periods of years.” That process could even repeat itself over decades before the star’s final explosion and collapse to a black hole. Kate Maguire, from Queen’s University Belfast, who was not involved with the study, told BBC News: “It’s a theoretical idea that people have put forward, but this is the first time that an object has been identified that matches this quite well. “It’s quite unusual.” Writing in a news and views article published in Nature, Prof Stan Woosley, from the University of California, Santa Cruz, said that in the Pulsational Pair Instability theory, a massive star may lose about half its mass before the series of violent pulses begins. Not everything we know about the “zombie” matches this theory, Prof Woosley added. But many uncertainties remain. “As of now, no detailed model has been published that can explain the observed emission and constant temperature of iPTF14hls, let alone the possible eruption 60 years ago,” he wrote. “For now, the supernova offers astronomers their greatest thrill: something they do not understand.” BBC

Bizarre shape of interstellar asteroid An asteroid that visited us from interstellar space is one of the most elongated cosmic objects known to science, a study has shown. Discovered on 19 October, the object’s speed and trajectory strongly suggested it originated in a planetary system around another star. Astronomers have been scrambling to observe the unique space rock, known as ‘Oumuamua, before it fades from view. Their results so far suggest it is at least 10 times longer than it is wide. That ratio is more extreme

than that of any asteroid or comet ever observed in our Solar System. Using observations from the Very Large Telescope in Chile, Karen Meech, from the Institute for Astronomy in Honolulu, Hawaii, and col-leagues determined that the object was about 400m long, rapidly rotating and subject to dramatic changes in brightness. These changes in brightness were the clue to ‘Oumuamua’s bizarre shape. “Looking at the asteroid light curve database, there are five objects (out of 20,000) that have light curves that would sug-gest a shape up to an axis ratio of about 7-8 to 1,” Dr Meech told BBC News. “Our errors are very small, so we are confident this is really elongated. Also, one has to realise we don’t know where the rotation pole is pointed. We assumed that it was perpendicular to the line of sight. If it were tipped over at all, then there are projection effects and the 10:1 is a minimum. It could be more elongated!” But in other respects, ‘Ou-muamua (pronounced oh MOO-uh MOO-uh), appears to resemble objects we know from closer to home. “We also found that it had a reddish colour, similar to objects in the outer Solar System, and confirmed that it is completely inert, without the faintest hint of dust around it,” Dr Meech said. These properties sug-gest that ‘Oumuamua is dense, comprised of rock and possibly metals, has no water or ice, and that its surface was reddened due to the effects of irradiation from cosmic rays over long periods of time. Although ‘Oumuamua formed around another star, scientists think it could have been wandering through the Milky Way, unattached to any star system, for hundreds of millions of years before its chance encounter with our Solar System. “For decades we’ve theorised that such interstellar objects are out there, and now - for the first time - we have direct evidence they exist,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for Nasa’s science mission directorate in Washington DC. “This history-making discovery is opening a new window to study formation of solar systems beyond our own.” If planets form around other stars the same way they did in the Solar System, many objects the size of ‘Oumuamua should get slung out into space. The interstellar visitor may provide the first evidence of that process. As regards how ‘Oumuamua became so elongated, Dr Meech explained: “There has been speculation among various team members about this. Sometimes very elongated objects are contact binaries... but even so, the pieces would be longer than most things in the Solar System, and our analysis shows that it is rotating fast enough that they should not stay together. “One of our team wondered if, during a planetary system formation, if there was a large collision between bodies that had molten cores, some material could get ejected out and then freeze in an elongated shape. “Another team member was wondering if there could be some process during the ejection - say if there was a nearby supernova explosion that could be responsible.” The cosmic interloper was discovered by Rob Weryk, a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Astronomy and a co-author of the new study, which is published in Nature journal. Weryk and fellow Institute for Astronomy researcher Marco Micheli realised it was going extremely fast (with enough speed to avoid being captured by the Sun’s gravitational pull) and was on a very eccentric trajectory taking it out of our Solar System. The asteroid’s name, ‘Oumuamua, means “a messenger from afar arriving first” in Hawaiian. BBC

Minimum alcohol pricing in Scotland to start in May Scotland will introduce minimum pricing for alcohol on 1 May next year, the Scottish government has announced. The move will raise the cost of the strongest, cheapest alcohol by setting a minimum price per unit. Health Secretary Shona Robison told MSPs that she expected the price to be set at 50p-per-unit, but this will be subject to a consultation. She said the measure was needed to tackle the “devastation” caused by cheap, high-strength alcohol. The 50p-per-unit minimum would raise the price of the cheapest bottle of red wine (9.4 units of alcohol) to £4.69, while a four-pack of 500ml cans of 4% lager (8 units) would cost at least £4 and a 70cl bottle of whisky (28 units of alcohol) could not be sold for less than £14. Normal strength cider (5% ABV) would cost at least £2.50 a litre but a super-strength version (7.5% ABV) would have to cost a minimum of £3.75 for a litre. Key weapon Minimum pricing is largely aimed at cheap lager, cider and spirits sold in supermarkets and off-licences. But it would leave more expensive drinks unaffected, and is unlikely to impact on sales in pubs and clubs. The Scottish government views the measure as a key weapon in the battle against binge drinking, with people in Scotland said to buy 20% more alcohol on average than those in England and Wales. Alcohol Focus Scotland research from last year suggested that the maximum recommended weekly intake of alcohol - 14 units - could be bought for just £2.52, with super-strength cider and own-brand vodka and whisky available from as little as 18p per unit of alcohol. The Scottish Parliament passed the minimum pricing legislation five years ago but it was tied up in a legal challenge by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) until last week, when the Supreme Court ruled that it did not breach EU law. Judges ruled unanimously that the policy was a “proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim” - with the SWA agreeing to pay the Scottish government’s legal costs. Minimum pricing has been broadly welcomed by health bodies and alcohol awareness groups, who say it will target the kind of drinking that leads to the greatest harm. There were 1,265 alcohol-related deaths in Scotland last year, an increase of 10% on 2015 - figures which Ms Robison described as “completely unacceptable”. Speaking in the Scottish Parliament, the health secretary said the delays to minimum pricing meant lives had been lost that might not have been, and stressed her commitment to implementing the policy “as soon as it is practicable”. She said: “With alcohol on sale today at just 18p a unit, we have to act to tackle the scourge of cheap, high-strength drink that causes so much damage.” Ms Robison said research had shown that a minimum unit price of 50p would cut alcohol-related deaths by 392 and hospital admissions by 8,254 over the first five years of the policy. She added: “I anticipate setting the minimum unit price at 50p per unit. We now want to hear from retailers, representative bodies and Licensing Standards Officers about the practicalities of implementation.” All additional money raised by the increase in pricing will be kept by the retailer. The legislation has a “sunset clause”, which means it will be reviewed after five years before a decision is taken on whether it should continue, and in what form. What has been the reaction? While welcoming the confirmation that the policy will finally be implemented, some people have questioned whether the 50p minimum price - which was recommended five years ago - will be enough to achieve the policy’s objectives. Dr Chris Holmes from Sheffield University, who carried out much of the initial research into minimum pricing, told BBC Scotland that there was now “certainly an argument for looking at a higher level” than 50p. He explained: “When we first did this work, around three-quarters of alcohol in Scotland was sold for less than 50p per unit; today it’s around half of all alcohol. “So there is an argument that the Scottish government may want to look at whether and when to increase the minimum price threshold to ensure it retains its effectiveness.” Scottish Conservative deputy leader Jackson Carlaw also welcomed Ms Robison’s announcement, but said there had to be a discussion around the 50p rate. He asked: “Not only is that figure now five years old, but will it be suitable for another five years as this policy develops?” Scottish Labour’s Colin Smyth highlighted new figures which he said showed that alcohol-related hospital admissions are eight times higher among people from the most deprived communities. Calling for “real change” to tackle Scotland’s drinking culture, he said: “The reality is the SNP has slashed funding for alcohol and drug partnerships by 24% in recent years, cutting support for people including the poorest in the most deprived communities.” Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie is among those to have call for a 60p minimum price, which he said would reflect the impact of inflation and other factors over the past five years. Anthony Joshua v Deontay Wilder a certainty in 2018 - Eddie Hearn Promoter Eddie Hearn says there is “ab-solutely no question” Anthony Joshua will face Deontay Wilder in a heavyweight uni-fication bout in 2018. Wilder called out Brit-ain’s IBF and WBA champion after defend-ing his WBC title against Bermane Stiverne on Saturday. Hearn met Wilder’s promoter in the USA on Thursday and urged the American to keep his financial demands realistic. “We need middle ground between reality and fantasy,” said Hearn. “If we can, I don’t see problems making the fight.” He added: “Unfortunately, Anthony has to overpay opponents. If we offered Deontay the correct purse for this fight it would never happen because he would think it was disrespectful. “So we have to overpay him to make it happen. And we have to give him respect because he’s a great fighter, a great champion, really exciting, a great self promoter. “I feel a bit bad for him, he’s got no promoter pushing him.” Speaking to IFL TV, Hearn pointed to what he perceives as Wilder’s limited profile in the United States by asking people on a New York street if they recognised the 32-year-old’s name. Hearn emerged from his meeting with Wilder’s team on Thursday stating there was a “desire” from both camps to “make this happen”. He was unable to clarify if it would be Joshua’s next fight or if a summer bout is more likely but stressed a meeting between the two unbeaten fighters would be the “biggest fight in world boxing”, adding: “Joshua wants this fight bad, Wilder wants it bad as well.” Hearn added: “It’s going to happen in 2018, absolutely no question. You can’t get away with not making fights any more because when you do you wake up to a million tweets.” Joshua, whose past two bouts have been in front of about 90,000 fans at Wembley Stadium and over 70,000 at Wales’ Principality Stadium, is keen to keep fighting in the UK. Fighting overseas has been mooted by the 28-year-old’s management but Hearn concedes any move to Las Vegas to face Wilder would result in higher-priced tickets because the venues in the American city are substantially smaller than UK options. Should the fight take place next, the winner would hold three of the four major titles in the heavyweight division, with New Zealand’s Joseph Parker in possession of the WBO belt. Fury responds to Joshua weight loss tweet On Wednesday, Joshua told former heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury to lose weight on social media. Briton Fury, who was not beaten but instead relinquished three of the four major titles after defeating Wladimir Klitschko in 2015, has made no secret of his need to lose between six and seven stone if he is to return to the sport. In a video message, he responded to a post on Twitter by Joshua, saying: “A message to the weight lifter, big Anthony Joshua, the tough man. I don’t need to get fit for someone like you. I’ve seen what you’re about. Useless, no gas, no stamina, too many weights.” Fury has not fought since facing Klitschko and is without a boxing licence. The 29-year-old tested positive for a banned steroid in June 2016, and says the adverse result came from eating uncastrated wild boar. A legal battle with UK Anti-Doping over the evidence has meant Fury has not fought for two years. In October 2016, Fury gave up his world titles to focus on mental health problems and the British Boxing Board of Control suspended his licence “pending further investigation into anti-doping and medical issues”. Hearn has asked for patience from fans calling on Fury to face Joshua, saying: “Forget the Anthony Joshua fight for him for now, get Tyson Fury back on the horse. “Get him in big fights, get him up there in the rankings. Let the public believe the words and the hype again rather than just listening to it on social media. “He’s a great fighter, a great guy - but too many people have heard ‘I’m coming back’. Let’s show them the actions.” BBC

He said: “Those who seek to say Islam is the destruction of other religions are liars.” The project, agreed between France and Abu Dhabi in 2007, was initially intended to open in 2012 but was delayed by the global financial crisis and plummeting oil prices, sending the final cost soaring over its original $654m (then £340m) budget. Among the priceless artefacts on show are a statue of a sphinx dating back to the 6th Century BC and a frieze depict-ing figures from the Koran. The museum’s doors open to the public on Saturday - with all entrance tickets, priced 60 dirhams ($16.80), sold out. Emirati officials will hope the magnificence of the building will put concerns about the wellbeing of its workers and controversy about delays and overrunning costs in the shade. BBC

European Tour needs to continue radical and bold approach A radical and bold approach is needed if the European Tour is to fight off challenges that threaten its chances of ful-filling its increasingly promising potential. The most thrilling climax to a Race to Dubai season has just been completed, producing two youthful and char-ismatic champions with superstar potential. Tommy Fleetwood, aged 26, is an engaging personality who, within the last eighteen months, dramatically turned around a faltering career to become Europe’s top dog on the money list. Three years younger, Spain’s Jon Rahm, emphasised his class with victory in the season-ending DP World Tour Championship. Both are players capable of generating serious interest in the game. But sadly from the European Tour’s point of view, both will also set sights on the PGA Tour in the United States. Rahm is already based in the US and Fleetwood, fresh from edging out Justin Rose to the Race title, says he wants to play more across the Atlantic Ocean. The US schedule remains an irresistible lure despite prize fund inflation in Europe. In 2016 the tour’s 100th ranked player banked 275,000 Euros, this year the reward was 389,000. Sheffield’s Matt Fitzpatrick, 23, the champion in Dubai 12 months ago, is now preparing to move to Florida and join a long established exodus. Nevertheless, the European Tour does possess a boldness and energy to suggest it can further develop despite the relentless dominance of its American rivals. Two years into his stewardship, the brash Keith Pelley has instilled a fresher and more business orientated outlook. He knows not enough sports fans are consuming professional golf and is striving to arrest the decline. Under the 53-year-old Canadian chief executive’s leadership, the Tour has found ways, via a string of inspired social media films, to bring golfers’ personalities to the general public. It’s ironic to think the process began a year ago with a “mannequin challenge” because it is one area where the Tour and its producers have not stood still. Recent offerings include pro’s trying to drive onto a two-yard wide fairway, spoof golf lessons,a world record attempt to play the fastest hole and Eduardo Molinari spending all day trying to hit a hole in one. Going forward, Pelley is promising more of the same. “We are a content entertainment company where our players are performers and golf is the platform,” he said. “We believe that creating innovative, entertaining content to showcase our players in a completely different light is undeniably the way forward.” It will be fascinating to see how his philosophy impacts forthcoming television negotiations because Pelley wants the widest possible audience for his players. He is not afraid of being innovative in searching for reach. Last week’s Hero Challenge - a knockabout curtain raiser to the main event in Dubai - was live streamed on Twitter. Pelley has employed Stu Nicol from the PGA Tour as a new head of broadcasting and Michael Cole has been hired as head of technology. “If you think about the way the world is going, people want to watch what they want when they want, how they want,” Pelley said. “We are making technology a very important part of the growth of the European Tour.” Growth is the buzzword. And if golf wants to move with the times it might also think about how relevant single-sex organisations are in a modern sporting environment. Perhaps this is why the European Tour recently offered its assistance to the struggling Ladies European Tour. “We tried to get involved,” Pelley told BBC Sport. “We actually presented to the LET board along with Mike Whan from the LPGA a couple of months ago. “We had a three-way partnership with ourselves, the LPGA and the R&A. “It’s very important for the LET to flourish. They have decided at this particular time to try to rebuild the LET on their own. “But we have said to them we are here whenever you need us.” Given the rapid growth of women’s sport and golf’s constant struggle to shed its debilitating elitist and sexist image, a merging of the two European Tours makes a lot of sense. Not to create a schedule of mixed tournaments but to pool resources, marketing opportunities and present the kind of enlightened image that serves so well the likes of cricket and tennis. If they are genuinely seeking to maintain relevance and grow for golf it should happen. And if it does, we will know that there is indeed a genuinely progressive golfing agenda. Opportunities abound for the European Tour and being bold and radical is their only option. BBC
