the questions. It is important that we do not place undue pressure on children in the lead up to NAPLAN, instead simply encourage your child to try their best. The tests provide parents and the school with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN tests are just one aspect of our school’s assessment and reporting process; they do not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance.

Opportunity Class Applications Opportunity classes cater for high achieving academically gifted students in Years 5 and 6. Applications for opportunity class placement are now open and they close on Friday 17 May 2019. No late applications are accepted. Applications should be completed online and detailed instructions are available at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and- opportunity-classes/year-5

Walk Safely to School Day and Key Road Safety Messages National Walk Safely to School Day is on Friday 17 May and we are encouraging all students to walk to school on this day. The event aims to raise awareness of the health, road safety, transport and environmental benefits that regular walking (especially to and from school) can provide for the long term well-being of our children. If you are unable to walk all the way, perhaps think about parking a little further away and walking part of the way. This may help with finding parking too! Win-win! Included in this newsletter is a Key road safety message handout about how to practice road safety with your kids as a pedestrian, passenger or bike/scooter rider.

NSWPSSA Girls Football On 21 of May Aanshi from 5/6M will play as part of the Sydney North team competing at the State Knockout Championships in Lismore. This highly skilled competition will take place over three days with different teams from around the state battling it out for the 13 spots in the New South Wales team. We are privileged to have Aanshi representing West Ryde as the team’s leading striker. Best of luck Aanshi!

Happy Mother’s Day I hope that all our mums, grandmas, aunts, carers and mother figures in all our students’ lives have a wonderful day on Sunday. I know a day is not enough to acknowledge all the amazing things you do day to do in the lives of our students, but hope you have a moment to put your feet up on Sunday. Albina Lee – R/Principal Cross Country Last Thursday May 2nd all students aged 8 years and older walked to Meadowbank Park to compete in the school’s annual Cross Country. All students were first taken for a walk around either the 2 kilometre or 3 kilometre course and on completion students raced in good spirit against their peers of the same age. A lot of fun was had by all participants with some speedy few making their way through to the Zone Cross Country in week 5.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter and please note if you have previously completed this in 2018, you will not need to do so again this year. You can also download the order form from our school’s website and drop your orders along with the exact change. The last week of the first term was a bit nostalgic as we farewelled our long time Principal, Ms. Kim Lloyd-Jones, who embarked on her retirement journey. I would like to thank all the children and the parents of our school community who came together to say Good Bye to Kim.

I would like to mention our amazing chef mum, Sarah, who baked an absolute delight of a cake for this special occasion. Sarah, you rock! Your creation touched everyone’s heart!

Kim also received a certificate of merit from all of us for all her and I would like to thank Hannah for organising it

Easter fair at West Ryde Market Place

Did you get a chance to participate in the Easter parade held at the West Ryde Market Place on 13th April 2019? Well if you did then you know congratulations are in order! We won the parade and represented our school really well. There were many excited children who were extremely punctual and happy! Congratulations everyone! If you won an individual prize, we would love to hear from you . Thanks Neesha for reaching early on the day, carrying the banner and the bunting and making sure that everyone is lined up at the designated area. The parade was flawless!!

Our school band and Orchestra performed in the Easter Fair as well. Not sure if everyone is aware but our school’s Band and Orchestra are both managed by P&C. We are very lucky to have so many wonderful volunteers.

STEM ACADAMY: West Ryde Public School is proud to announce its partnership with the University of Sydney through the participation in the STEM Teacher Enrichment Academy!

Established in 2014, the STEM Teacher Enrichment Academy offers knowledge, skills, resources and support to enable teachers to make real change in their classroom teaching of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. The program is the first of its kind in Australia and is helping build the nation’s STEM capability by inspiring teachers through enrichment-focused professional development.

West Ryde was one of sixteen successful schools to be accepted into the program from over 100 applicants. The academy will work closely with four classes (1W, 3N, 4D & 5/6M) to help develop our students’ skills as 21st Century Learners and enable them to become successful global learners. Whilst these four classes will be working closely with the academy, the knowledge gained by the teachers will be shared throughout the school to ensure schoolwide growth in STEM education. We look forward to undertaking this journey and know it will provide wonderful learning opportunities and success stories for the students of West Ryde.
