The village of Olmeda de la Cuesta, which is just

two hours from Madrid, has the oldest population in

Spain – the major majority of citizens are over 70

years old and the youngest is 65. Arturo Regacho

Mateo, 82, explained that young people had moved

off out of the village in order to find employment.

But the authoritarians authorities are not giving up

– they’re trying to sell plots of land for a starting

price of only €2,000. They hope that young people

who can’t affect afford to buy property in the cities

(where flats cost a hand an arm and a leg) will

come and set in up their homes in the village.
