2012-2013 List of Non-profit Organizations

Dear Bainbridge Islander,For over 50 years, One Call for All (OCFA) has existed to help make Bainbridge Island a caring and compassionate place to live. We do that by raising money for non-profit organizations that support our neighbors in hundreds of different ways.

In 2011-2012, for the first time, Bainbridge Islanders gave over $1,000,000 to support these non-profit agencies. I’m amazed and humbled by the generosity so many of you have shown. In spite of the success of last year’s Red Envelope fund drive the needs remain great and that’s why I’m asking you to give generously this year.

With one check you can choose to:• Supportstudentsofallagesandabilities• Buildamorevibrantartscommunity• Advocatefortheenvironmentandsustainability• Supportourrecreationalfacilities,openspacesandfarms• Helpsomeonelessfortunate

Giving is simple: one envelope, one check, your cause(s). One Call.As always, 100% of your donation goes to the non-profits of your choosing. (I hope you will also consider a donation to help cover OCFA’s operating costs.)

Thank you for your ongoing and generous support; your contribution matters.

Montessori Country School is marking major milestones these days – its 40-year anniversary, the retirement of the school’s second generation of leadership, and plans to consolidate with Voyager Montessori elementary School in 2013-2014 which will culminate in Montessori Country School educating children from 18 months through the sixth grade.

For this arrow Point Drive school, which currently enrolls 80 students 18 months through kindergarten, One Call For all ensures financial aid is available, requests for which have nearly tripled since 2008. About 18 percent of the students receive aid and of those awards, about 16 percent of the funds are made possible by One Call For all donations. last year they saw their highest number of donors at 57 donors, with a total of $5,980 in donations.

“Our Board of Trustees doesn’t want to deny a child this experience due to inability to pay,” said Head of School, Patty Christensen. “One Call For all makes a huge difference – the difference of some children being here, or not.”

annual tuition for pre-primary and primary students ranges from $3,550 to $10,000 depending on the program. The school’s primary source of revenue is from tuition. In addition to One Call For

All contributions, the school raises money through a giving campaign each fall, an annual auction, and a few product sales.

Christensen is retiring after the 2012-13 year, having served 26 years at the school founded by her late mother, Dorothy King, and the late Julie Rynearson.

In 1979, the school moved to its current campus - a converted house on arrow Point Drive, where walls were removed and rooms were added as the school grew. In 1988, when parents requested expanding beyond preschool and kindergarten, the school started an elementary program, which spun off in 1995 and became Voyager Montessori elementary School. With the 2013-2014 school year, these two strong schools will be reunited to form a single school administered by Montessori Country School.

Country School and Voyager have shared several families over the years. ”What we have in common is our Montessori philosophy,” said teacher Meghan Skotheim, who will be stepping into the role of Head of School with Christensen’s departure. “With that already in place, it’s really bringing our two fabulous school communities together.”

The Montessori philosophy holds that children need to be offered a carefully prepared environment where they are free to explore and learn, following their

interests and progressing at their own pace. each class has a three-year age-span. First-year students enter as novices, the second-year students return as confident explorers and third-year students experience mastery – becoming mentors and teachers of the younger students. It’s the sort of cycle experienced

throughout life – so this early experience builds the skills to succeed in those cycles.

“The students learn they can make a difference,” Christensen said. “They leave with a strong sense of what it is to be in a caring, respectful community.”

For children growing up in a concrete world, a squirrel can be nothing short of magical. A trail through the quiet forest can be a path to worlds and possibilities never imagined.

That’s what IslandWood’s 225-acres outdoor learning center has been providing for a decade to thousands of students as it fulfills its mission “to provide exceptional learning experiences and to inspire lifelong environmental and community stewardship.”

It’s not just students who benefit – each year thousands of community members visit the campus through community events, conferences and leadership programs. But it’s the kids who are at the heart of the mission, and nature who is the star of the show. IslandWood is made up of trails through second-growth forest, a stream, a four-acre pond, a deep ravine traversed by a suspension bridge and the Blakely Harbor beach. Structures include two tree houses, mill worker’s cabin, bird blind, a floating classroom, four lodges, a guest house, dining hall, learning studios, art studio, administrative offices, the Great Hall, and more.

The primary activity at IslandWood is its four-day, three-night School Overnight Program. Students experience hands-on education in which the environment

serves as classroom and where science, technology and the arts are integrated. and like nature adapts to conditions, IslandWood teaches to diverse learning styles.

More than 4,000 children in fourth, fifth and sixth grades participated in the last academic year, representing 88 schools from throughout the region.

“Islanders contribute for those who don’t have the good fortune of living somewhere like this,” Philanthropy Coordinator Jeannie Patterson said, when asked why islanders give – more than $8,600 last year – to IslandWood in the One Call For all campaign. “every single one of the students benefits from those donors – from those in affluent schools to the kids in First Place (a Seattle school for homeless children).”

IslandWood’s menu of experiences also includes professional development for teachers, including a graduate program affiliated with the University of Washington, spring and summer programs for families and children 4-12, special programs and opportunities for non-profits.

IslandWood is expanding its reach, this year hosting military families who had someone just home from, or about to depart for, war. About 80 people, parents and children, spent four days on campus, experiencing nature activities, along with

family and educational services.

“It was really touching, and an interesting way to use nature as a place for healing,” Patterson said.

IslandWood also hosted “Voices from the Field,” a four-day, five-night program for 48 children of migrant workers.

Videos and slide shows of these and other events at IslandWood, which employs about 87 people and depends on nearly 100 volunteers, are available at www.islandwood.org.

“Ten dollars is just as important as the $10,000 we get from another person,” Patterson said. “Every single dollar is able to provide a scholarship for a child. It’s the aggregate that’s important – and the advocacy and passion that sustains us for the future.”

With 25 schools celebrating their 10th anniversary of participating in IslandWood’s programs, Patterson has a cache of stories about children experiencing the environment in this

outdoor classroom – where some discover their own leadership potential for the first time, some witness science coming alive and some, only recently, think the discovery of coyote scat on the trail just has to be a joke. And when they learn it’s not a joke, they might just wonder what else could be possible in this world.

What can hold a child back from living a successful and healthy life is often right under their little noses – their mouths.

Children who don’t receive dental care – and that means the vast majority of children in low-income families – are often chronically absent from school, as they struggle to focus due to pain or embarrassment or both. All of which sets in motion a dynamic that is difficult to correct. according to Washington State Smile Partners, a Bainbridge Island non-profit that delivers oral health care to thousands of kids and hundreds of senior adults, tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease and children from low-income homes have as many as three times the number of cavities as their peers. These are the children – those who are residents of South King and Kitsap counties – who are Smile Partners’ clients. Smile Partners also visits the Bainbridge Senior Center several Fridays a month to provide oral health care on a sliding scale.

“We want to make good oral health attainable and affordable to anyone in our community by providing advocacy, education and preventive dental services,” said george Parker, executive director of Smile Partners, headquartered at the Marge Center on Winslow Way.

Smile Partners, founded in 2004 by island native and dental hygienist Kate Mills, visits schools and senior centers with portable equipment and registered dental hygienists to conduct oral screenings, fluoride varnish applications, cleanings and sealants on-site and inside the building, as opposed to vans in the parking lot. They serve low-income children in elementary and pre-schools in which an average of 80% of the students qualify for free or reduced-price school lunches due to income.

In the 2011-12 school year, Smile Partners worked in elementary schools in the Federal Way, Highline, Tukwila and Bremerton school districts and with pre-schools in the Puget Sound and Olympic educational Service Districts. Sometimes they are at a school for a week and see a quarter of the students. A single hygienist can see up to 10 kids in a single day.

In calendar year 2011, Smile Partners saw about 10,000 clients, providing more than 28,000 unique oral health services. as this was written, the group was on a pace to perform more than 38,000 oral health services within 2012.

The organization consists of 17 part- and full-time employees including hygienists and two dentists who work with them, and is governed by a nine-member board of directors.

In both a senior or child environment, Smile Partners can provide temporary fillings and refer clients to a dentist. Parker said the many years of providing services is paying off as they see less need for referrals.

Smile Partners is a unique model – they are reimbursed by Medicaid but still “lose money every day. That’s why we work with

this population. If you could make money doing this, the private sector would be doing it.”

The $6,243 brought in last year by the One Call For all campaign is crucial, Parker said, to helping Washington State Smile Partners provide “healthy smiles for every generation.” For more information, visit www.smilepartners.org.

Bainbridge Island Youth Orchestra gives young violin, viola, cello and bass musicians the opportunity to perform in an orchestra while learning collaboration, teamwork and community involvement.

BIYO, founded by cello teacher Priscilla Jones and parents in 2001 to provide

musical opportunities not available in public schools, offers two string orchestras for musicians 7-18. The Sinfonietta is for those new to performing in a string orchestra, typically late grade school or middle school students; and the Senior Orchestra is for intermediate to advanced players, typically in late middle school or high school.

About 30 young musicians participate in BIYO, each season playing three family concerts that are free and open to the public, at regional orchestra festivals and side-by-side concerts with the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra. They also can be heard at special community events, such as holiday concerts, the Farmers’ Market, in schools and at benefits.

Sinfonietta musicians focus on skills needed to play in an orchestra such as listening, orchestral performance techniques and style. Their past works include Carol Nunez’s “Little Symphony,” Deborah Monday’s “Conquistador!” and Offenbach’s “Can-Can.”

Senior Orchestra members perform music from all eras and style periods, such

as Warlock’s “Capriol Suite,” Mozart’s “Overture to the Seraglio” and even music by Coldplay and Lady Gaga.

Students rehearse one night a week for an hour and a half with BIYO’s new music director/conductor Wesley Schulz, who holds the same position with the Bainbridge Symphony (the two are not affiliated).

Students audition for BIYO, and tuition is $330 for the September-April season. Financial assistance is available, thanks in part to One Call For all, which last year brought in $3,780. The organization has been in transition, bringing on a new music director, producing informational materials and working to expand its outreach.

“Right now One Call For all is very important, as it’s our main funding source. We’ve been focusing on growing our season and our orchestra,” Board of Directors member Bruce Branson-Meyer said.

But there still is music to be purchased, facilities to be rented, festival fees to pay, T-shirts to buy, small scholarships for graduating seniors to be bestowed, and financial assistance to be offered.

“The truth is, we have never denied anybody due to an inability to pay tuition,” said Branson-Meyer, whose daughter Mattie, 14, plays her grandmother’s cello in BIYO.

Because BIYO musicians often attend different schools, they don’t have much time to get to know one another. BIYO wants to host weekend workshops in the interest of building teamwork. Because it’s not just music that’s being made – it’s also expression, connection and learning the importance of striving for excellence.

“I firmly believe that music gave her a mind for math – she’s doing really well,” Branson-Meyer said of his own daughter’s experience.

It has been gratifying, Branson-Meyer said, to see examples of the long-term benefits that BIYO has provided – students winning scholarships or going on to perform with bigger orchestras.

BIYO hosts auditions at the beginning of each school year, and accepts new students throughout the season. Information can be found at www.biyo.us.

Judy garland was on to something in 1939 when she suggested putting on a show in the garage to save the orphanage: “We’ve gotta have a great show, with a million laughs, and color, and a lot of lights to make it sparkle. and songs - wonderful songs. Oh, can’t you just see it?”

Thanks to Bainbridge Performing Arts, about 20,000 people a year do see it when they come through the doors to experience musicals, dramas, musical performances, comedies and classes.

BPa views the annual One Call For all Campaign as a barometer of sorts for how the group is perceived in the community. and the $9,879 the group received from the campaign last year surely qualifies as a rousing round of applause.

In addition to its annual season of four to five stage productions, BPA also presents music from the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Music Concerts, comedy from The eDge Improv, a Theatre School and rentals and co-productions with local arts organizations.

The One Call For all money goes primarily into production costs – which are monumental. The rights to a musical can cost as much as $7,500 – before anyone sets foot on the stage. all the actors and most of the crew are volunteers, spending

hundreds of hours at BPa preparing for a single production. But the costumes and lights and the so-called “paid” positions – directors, music directors, choreographers, costumers, lighting technicians, sound designers, to name a few – receive a small stipend.

“It translates to about 12 cents an hour,” BPA Executive Director Dominique Cantwell jokes. “But we do try to acknowledge the incredible amount of effort that goes into a production.”

They don’t do it for the money, clearly.“This place is a labor of love for everyone

involved,” Cantwell said. Ticket sales cover only 27 percent of

the theatre’s costs. The remainder comes through contributions, rentals, tuition and concession sales.

BPA was born in 1956 as Bainbridge light Opera, and joined forces with Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra after it began in 1972. In 1993, the Playhouse (capacity 251) between Madison and Ericksen avenues was built through a $1.2 million fundraising campaign. In the spring of 2013, BPA will celebrate its 20th anniversary, having staged 90-100 mainstage productions.

BPa also offers The edge, an increasingly popular improvisational troupe that performs on the first Saturday of each

month, and space for performances by local dance centers and touring artists.

But perhaps their most important work is the Theater School – offering classes year-round for everyone from preschoolers to senior adults. The classes cover everything from dance to Shakespeare, acting and writing, and scenery, and always culminate in a performance. The school also offers summer camps for all ages, including

families. Admission is “need blind,” and any student needing full or partial tuition assistance is helped. BPa provides assistance to 12% to 15% of its students.

“We asked ourselves, ‘What is our value in the community?’ It’s more than just entertainment. It’s about education and involvement. Everybody – absolutely everybody – has a place at BPA,” Cantwell said.

When we first learned about the red envelope before moving to Bainbridge, it was apparent that there was community engagement for the common good. Now that we are involved as Islanders, I see first ‐hand how the strategic partnerships of OCFA work together in the nonprofit sector. There is real power for good in the collective dollar.

Marcia HastingsBI resident of 3 years

Page 24: Answer The Call 2012

In the summer of 1942, a dedicated group of citizens saw the need for an emergency response team on Bainbridge Island. In November of 1942, our rst re district meeting was attended by 16 volunteer

remen, and by 1946, our ambulance service consisted of a 1936 Buick and a

group of dedicated American Legionnaire drivers. From these humble beginnings,

our organization has grown enormously, but we have never lost our commitment to

volunteerism and serving the community in which we live. Our mission is to serve

Bainbridge Island by providing emergency response, training, and equipment to the

community. We accomplish this mission by serving as active volunteer re ghters

and Emergency Medical Technicians, by hosting educational events such as Fun Fair

and Pancake Breakfast, by offering CPR and AED training to the community, and by

purchasing equipment that we donate to the Bainbridge Island Fire Department.
