Drake Passage: Sir Francis Drake was born in Devon, and at the age of

13, he began traveling to the West Indies. Between 1577 – 1580 he sailed around the world – the first Englishman to do so – looting Spanish ships and creating nautical charts of the new territories he navigated. On September 6th, 1577, Drake completed his pass through the Magellanic Straits, however the next day he was caught in a big storm that pushed his ship, The Golden Hind, below 57 degrees latitude south. It was here that he found the meeting of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, the turbulent area that is now known as the “Drake Passage”. This also proved that Tierra del Fuego was not a part of “Tierra Australis Incognita”, a fact that the cartographers of those days had refused to accept for a long time.

“If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in the water…its substance

reaches everywhere; it touches the past and prepares the future.”

- Lorne Eisley

Cuverville Island, Brown Base, Skontorp Cove & Lemaire Channel Wednesday, March 08th 2017 Expedition Morning 07:00 Wake-up call Dependent on weather, wind, sea and wildlife conditions, we hope to land and Zodiac cruise at Cuverville Island in the Errera Channel.

The ‘Chinstrap’ Group will be called first followed by Gentoo, Magellanic and Adélie. Expedition Afternoon Dependent on weather, wind, sea and wildlife conditions, we hope to land and Zodiac cruise at Brown Base and Skontorp Cove.

The ‘Gentoo’ Group will be called first followed by Magellanic, Adélie and Chinstrap. 18:00 Please join Sarah and the expedition team in the Discovery

Lounge for a Briefing. After Dinner Join us on the outer decks as we will be transiting through the very scenic Lemaire

Channel.

CUVERVILLE ISLAND lies in the Errera Channel, between Rongé Island and the Arctowski Peninsula. The island was discovered by Gerlache’s Belgica expedition of 1897-9, and named after a vice-admiral in the French Navy. This small rocky island has vertical cliffs measuring 200 m (650 ft) in elevation with extensive moss cover. Cuverville Island is home to the largest gentoo penguin colony in the region (5,000 breeding pairs), along with southern giant petrels, kelp gulls, Antarctic terns, snowy sheathbills and south polar skuas. BROWN BASE’S original facilities were burned down by the station's doctor on 12 April 1984.Station personnel was rescued by the ship USS Hero and taken to United States’s Palmer Station. Argentina rebuilt the base but it was demoted to summer-only status. During the summer campaign of 1995–96 the Logistics Department of the Argentine National Antarctic Directorate built two new habitable modules: a laboratory and a house with amenities. In the 1999–2000 campaign the Directorate built a new main house capable of comfortably accommodating 8 people; the new building consists of 4 bedrooms, kitchen and 2 bathrooms.Brown slipped into several years of inactivity during the 2000s decade but since 2007 is occupied during the summer again LEMAIRE CHANNEL is an 11 km long by 1.6 km wide (7 mi by 1 mi) passage that runs from False Cape Renard to Cape Cloos, separating Booth Island from the Antarctic continent. It was discovered by Dallmann’s German expedition of 1873 but Gerlache was the first to navigate the channel in 1898 and named it in honour of Charles Lemaire, a Belgian explorer of the Congo. At its narrowest, the Lemaire Channel is less than 800 m (0.5 mi) wide with towering peaks in excess of 300 m (985 ft) overhead. The channel can be full of icebergs and sea ice which makes manoeuvring difficult. However, this is a good location for seeing seals hauled out on ice floes.

Antarctic Peninsula Petermann Island, Vernadsky Station & Wordie House Thursday, March 09th 2017

Expedition Morning 07:00 Wake-up call Dependent on weather, wind, sea and wildlife conditions, we hope to land and Zodiac cruise at Petermann Island. The ‘Magellanic’ Group will be called first followed by, Adélie, Chinstrap and Gentoo. Expedition Afternoon Dependent on weather, wind, sea and wildlife conditions, we hope to land and Zodiac cruise at Vernadsky Station and Wordie House. Discovery Lounge for a Briefing. After Dinner Documentary: ‘BBC Frozen Planet: Summer’ in the Discovery Lounge (58min). PETERMANN ISLAND lies just below the Lemaire Channel, southwest of Hovgaard Island, in the Wilhelm Archipelago. It was discovered by the Dallman expedition of 1873-4 and named after August Petermann, a German geographer and supporter of polar exploration. The French explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot and his vessel “Pourquoi Pas”? (meaning ‘why not?’) overwintered here in 1909. There is also a memorial cross nearby for three British scientists who died near here in August 1982. Petermann Island is home to Adélie penguins ,the most southerly colony of gentoo penguins in Antarctica (2,000 breeding pairs) and blue-eyed shags. Grass and moss can also be found on the northern section of the island once snow melts. There are stunning views from Petermann Island both looking north towards the Lemaire Channel and south, to the mountains of Graham Land. The Ukraine’s AKADEMIK VERNADSKY STATION is located on Galindez Island within the Argentine Islands. It was purchased from the British for a nominal price of one pound in 1996, as it was cheaper for them to sell the station than remove the buildings. As a British hut, Faraday base or Station F, was occupied continuously for 49 years between 1947 and 1996. Research conducted from this site focused on geophysics, meteorology and ionospherics. This is also where scientists first observed a depletion in the ozone layer, known as the ozone hole. The Ukrainian scientists at Vernadsky are continuing this ozone research in addition to studies focusing on geomagnetism, meteorology and glaciology.

“Glittering white, shining blue, raven black, in the light of the sun the land looks like a

fairy-tale. Pinnacle after pinnacle, peak after peak, crevassed, wild as any land on our

globe, it lies, unseen and untrodden.”

Antarctic Peninsula Neko Harbor, Port Lockroy & Jougla Point Friday, March 10th 2017 Expedition Morning 07:00 Wake up call This morning, dependent on weather, wind, sea and wildlife conditions, we hope to land and Zodiac cruise at Neko Harbour. The ‘Chinstrap’ Group will be called first followed by Gentoo, Magellanic and Adélie. Expedition Afternoon Dependent on weather, wind, sea and wildlife conditions, we hope to land at Port Lockroy & Jougla Point. The ‘Gentoo’ Group will be called first followed by Magellanic, Adélie and Chinstrap. of the Earth' (60 mins) in the Discovery Loun 18:15 Please join Sarah and the expedition team in the Discovery

Lounge for a Recap & Briefing. After Dinner Documentary: BBC Frozen Planet: Summer (58 min) NEKO HARBOUR lies on the eastern shore of Andvord Bay, approximately 11 km (7 mi) south of the Errera Channel. It was discovered by Gerlache during his Belgian Antarctic expedition (1897-9). It is named for the floating whale factory ship, Neko, which often used this bay. Neko operated between 1911-2 and 1923-4 in the South Shetlands and Antarctic Peninsula. This site is a mainland landing and home to approximately 500 breeding pairs of gentoo penguins, some of which nest around the foundations of an Argentinean refuge hut. Weddell seals may also be seen hauled-out on the cobblestone beach. PORT LOCKROY lies on the western side of Wiencke Island in the Palmer Archipelago. It was discovered by Charcot during his French Antarctic Expedition of 1903-5 and named for Édouard Lockroy, a French politician and sponsor. The harbour is relatively small, 800 meters long by 800 meters wide (0.5 miles by 0.5 miles), and comprises two sites: Goudier Island and Jougla Point. GOUDIER ISLAND is home to the restored British Antarctic Survey (BAS) hut and museum. The BAS hut was Station A, referred to as Bransfield House and occupied between 1943 and 1962. Research carried out at this site focused on surveying the region, geology, meteorology and botany but after 1950 the emphasis switched to ionospheric research. The hut was restored in 1996 and is now open to visitors during austral summers. JOUGLA POINT is home to numerous nesting gentoo penguins as well as blue-eyed shags.

“They are extraordinarily like children, these little people of the Antarctic world, either

like children, or like old men, full of their own importance and late for dinner, in their

black tail-coats and white shirt fronts - and rather portly withal.”

- Apsley Cherry Garrard - The Worst Journey in the World

WHALER’S BAY is the first bay inside Port Foster as you pass through Neptune’s Bellows at Deception Island. It was given its name by the French explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot due to the whaling activities undertaken in this bay in the 1900’s. The site has a flat, cinder beach which extends approximately 100 m (330 ft) inland before meeting the steep caldera wall. The buildings include the remains of the Norwegian Aktieselskabet Hektor whaling station and a British Antarctic Survey base which was evacuated in 1967 during an eruption. The BAS base, Station B had been a centre for aircraft operations in 1955-57 and 1959-69. Meteorological and geological research had also been conducted at this site TELEFON BAY moored in the bay while waiting for repairs, in 1909. From a wide, black-sand beach we walk up a gentle slope to the rim of a crater. From here you can see a small lake on the crater floor. The walk then continues up onto a ridge where there are excellent views of the caldera. ELEPHANT POINT is located on the southwest coast of Livingston Island and named after the elephant seals that you can observe there. There is also a Gentoo penguin rookerie and giant petrel can be found in the area.
