Log PeriodicAntennas
Model 3144G Dipole Array Antenna
ETS-EMCO’s Model 3144G is a broadband,linearly-polarized log periodic dipolearray antenna (LPDA) with a 100 MHz to1 GHz frequency range. The antenna hasmoderate gain to provide an idealillumination area. It exhibits low VSWR ofless than 2:1, which minimizes mismatchlosses between the amplifier and antenna. The Model 3144G handles high powerrequirements of up to 2 kW for generatinghigh electric field strength.
The 3144G is constructed of lightweight,corrosion-resistant aluminum, providingyears of trouble-free service. It receives atough powder coat finish, which protectsagainst scratching and abrasion betterthan painted or bare surfaces.
An optional wheeled pedestal is availablewhich permits horizontal and verticalantenna polarization, height, and tilt-angle adjustments. A pneumatic cylinderis used to change polarization, and can beremotely controlled using an optionalETS-EMCO Model 2090 Controller or anETS-EMCO 2190 Virtual Controller. TheModel 2090 is IEEE-488 compatible, and
Featuresl 100 MHz to 1 GHz frequency range
l Moderate gain for maximumillumination area
l Low VSWR of less than 2:1 minimizesmismatch losses between amplifierand antenna
l 2 kW continuous RF input power(Maximum)
l Tough powder coat finish
uses fiber optic I/O for communicationwith the pedestal. The Model 2190 is PCresident software, and also uses fiberoptic I/O for communication. (Seeseparate product data sheets for addi-tional details.)
Electrical Field Distribution*
The Model 3144G can be used in bothhorizontal and vertical polarizations. The antenna provides a half-powerbeamwidth greater than 50° across thewhole operating frequency range. Thefinal design is thoroughly optimizednumerically and experimentally forefficient radiation and illumination of alarge uniform area.
In the graphs that follow, a full numericalmodel is used to analyze the Model3144G, and no assumption was madeabout the input impedance and radiationpattern of the LPDA antenna. The LPDAantenna design, combined with the setupof the antenna with respect to theequipment under test(EUT), is speciallyoptimized to yield the best uniformity and
field strength in a large uniform area, such as5(w) x 2.4(h) m2 . The input power to theantenna is 1.8 kW (maximum RF output fromthe amplifier provided).
The LPDA antenna is at 1.8 m height from theground and is tilted to boresight to a 1 mheight point on the targeted uniform fieldplane. Field measurement is based on 100 V/mbeing the strongest field point in the uniformarea with the given input power.
For both horizontal and vertical polarizations,100 V/m with 0 dB to -3 dB uniformity can beachieved up to 500 MHz across the whole5 x 2.4m2 area. Above 500 MHz,
l For vertical polarization, from 500 MHz -1 GHz, field uniformity (0 dB to -3 dB) can beachieved in the horizontal direction. In thevertical direction, field uniformity isachieved 0.6 m above the floor in a5 (w) x 1.9(h) m2 area.
l For horizontal polarization, from 500 MHz -1 GHz, field uniformity (0 dB to -3 dB) can beachieved in the vertical direction. In thehorizontal direction, field uniformity isachieved up to a width of 2.5m (i.e. , 0.6 mabove the floor, 2.5 (w) x 2.4(h) m2).* Field distribution data are based on free-space condition. Performance may vary with different ground treatments.
