    A Message from the Chairman

We can neither conrm nor deny...

Since the dawn of the Fandom therehave been tales told of secret societiesthat operate in the shadows, just beyondthe range of sight, organizations whichquietly steer the direction in which FurryFandom proceeds. Folks have whisperedabout a cabal of convention chairmen who

meet under cover of darkness, never in thesame place twice. They claim that thereis a branch of the German governmentdedicated to studying these strangeand uffy creatures who are annuallybecoming more numerous. Rumors haveeven spread that Anthrocons chairmanmakes clandestine visits to Pittsburghand gathers together representatives

of all of the major hotels and of the citygovernment itself for purposes no one canguess.

To every one of these rumors, our answeris always the same: No comment.

It is, of course, no secret that Anthroconis entering its eighth year in the Steel City.We have more than doubled in size sinceour arrival, and to the best of our ability to

plan, were going to be here for quite a fewyears to come. This year we will continueour tradition of inviting luminary guestswho have made great contributions to ourFandom even those who never beforeknew that we existed. This year we areno longer a secret to two amazing actors

whose faces you may not have seen butwhose voices you have heard hundredsof times from almost as many characters. Please welcome Mr. Lee Tockar, whosevoice talents have been featured in My

Little Pony - Friendship is Magic, Sonic theHedgehog, Street Sharks and dozens ofother shows, and Mr. Jim Cummings, whose voice has brought to life suchmemorable characters as Winnie thePooh, the Tazmanian Devil, Ed the Hyena,Darkwing Duck, Don Karnage and otherstoo numerous to list. These gentlemenare true legends in the eld, and we hopethat they will have a grand time in ourcompany.

We have quite a lot of very specialprogramming lined up for our attendeesthis year, not the least of which is aperformance by Fox Amoore, who will behonoring us with some selections from hisalbum Come Find Me, recorded earlier thisyear at the famous Abbey Road Studios inLondon. He will be joined by the belovedBeltane Bard, Alexander Adams. And asalways, 2 the Ranting Gryphon will be

returning. There will surely be somethingfor everyone. We are very happy to offer our support

this year to Pittsburghs own NationalAviary, which is both a haven for featheredfriends and a place for us featherless sortsto learn more about them. Please begenerous when you stop by their table!

Be generous, too, with your applause for

our amazing staff and volunteers. Thesepeople put their lives on hold and use theirown time and resources to create thisamazing event that we call Anthrocon. Those of us who wear the Directorribbons are just the coaches. The rest arethe players on the team, the ones whomake it all happen, and we thank themfrom the bottom of our hearts.

Tell the kid hes got it, saidlegendary voice actor Mel Blanc with asmile, after listening to a young mansrst demo tape of cartoon charactervoices. The year was 1984, and thekid was Jim Cummings. Since then, thekid has gone on to give life and voice tosome of Americas most beloved animalcharacters, including a few of the lateMel Blancs. He was even nominatedfor an Emmy Award for his work as thelovable Tigger on Disney Channels MyFriends Tigger and Pooh, in which healso voices everyones favorite bear,Winnie the Pooh.

Born and raised in Youngstown,Ohio, Cummings spent Saturdaymornings riveted to the TV screen as hemimicked the characters in his favoritecartoons, all the while dreaming thatone day he would voice them himself. At age 19, he moved to New Orleans, where he performed as a drummer, a

singer, a deck hand on riverboats, andeven designed and created Mardi Grasoats, all the while absorbing the richcharacters and accents that wouldsomeday nd expression in animation.

Years later, Cummings relocated toSouthern California and managed avideo store as he pursued his childhood

dream. He gave his rst demo toa customer who was also a movieproducer, and the rest, as they say, ishistory. In 1984, Cummings landed hisrst role as Lionel the Lion, in DisneyChannels Dumbo Circus. Duringhis illustrious career, he has workedextensively for Walt Disney Studiosvoicing classic characters such as

Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, King Louie,Kaa the Snake, Pete (formerly peg-legged Pete), and more. His manyother credits include Darkwing Duck,Bonkers, Fat Cat and Monterey Jack inChip n Dale: Rescue Rangers, and DonKarnage in Talespin among others.

Cummings has done scores of voicesfor Warner Bros. as well, including Tazthe Tasmanian Devil himself, StevenSpielbergs Animaniacs, Tiny ToonAdventures, Batman, Pinky and theBrain, Tazmania, Duck Dodgers, and more. Other credits include Kingof the Hill, Bump in the Night,

Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: BoyGenius, The Replacements, TheAddams Family, Teenage MutantNinja Turtles, Star Wars: CloneWars, The Simpsons, Barnyard, and Catdog.

Not limited to the small screen,Cummings has acted in several

blockbuster feature lms forDreamworks including Shrek,Antz, Kung Fu Pandas Furious Five,Hook, Bee Movie, Balto, andmore. Cummings also played a part inthe 90s Disney Renaissance, providingvoices for memorable characters inThe Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The

Lion King, Pocahontas, Tarzan, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.As of late, Jim is enjoying being

the only American performer in theprimary cast of Gnomeo and Juliet, where he plays the amorous gardenamingo, Featherstone. He is excitedfor the release on July 15th of thesequel to the animated Disney classic,

Winnie the Pooh in which he voicesboth Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, too!He will also be playing an evil Africanwarlord, Budzo, in the upcoming

feature lm Zambezia to be releasedlater this year.

Cummings work in voiceoverincludes hundreds of television andradio commercials, movie trailers, promos, and video games, but no matterhow busy Cummings schedule may be,it all stops when Famous Fone Friends

of the Make-a-Wish Foundation call on

behalf of a very ill child and distraughtfamily in need of a phone call fromtheir favorite cartoon character. Justbringing a respite, however brief, and

perhaps a smile and giggle or two, means so much to the child and theirfamily. I consider it a true blessing tobe able to do that.

Cummings is a proud father of fourand resides somewhere in Californiawith his beautiful two youngerdaughters Grace and Lulu Rose and

    their critters.

    Charity Auction & Rafe Information

The genre of anthropomorphics is aeld that deals heavily in the thematicappreciation of animals crossed tovarying degrees with humans, resultingin fantastic, intelligent characters andmarvelous new imaginary species. However, we should never overlook thereal-life counterparts to this mix and

assist our animal friends in any way wecan, to ensure a better future for all ofus.

This year, Anthrocon has chosento support The National Aviary, thenations only independent indoornonprot zoo dedicated to birds. Fromtheir representatives:

The National Aviary is Americasonly independent indoor nonprot zoodedicated exclusively to birds. Locatedin West Park on Pittsburghs historicNorth Side, the National Aviarys diversecollection comprises more than 500 birdsrepresenting more than 150 species fromaround the world, many of them threatenedor endangered in the wild.

The National Aviarys large walk-through exhibits create an experienceunlike any other - an intimate, up-closeinteraction between visitors and free-yingbirds, including opportunities to hand-feed

and meet many species rarely found inzoos anywhere else in the world. The greatthing is that you can walk to our zoo fromdowntown Pittsburgh by crossing the 6thStreet Bridge, so we hope to see you whileyou visit!

As an environmental organizationcomposed of educators, conservationists,

and researchers, the National Aviaryprovides services well above and beyondwhat you see when you visit. Admissionsalone do not cover all the expenses associatedwith the robust education program, fullVeterinary Teaching Hospital, importantconservation work, and care for 500+ birdsand mammals. We appreciate your support,so thank you!

    2-5pm Sales, artist check-out

The Anthrocon Art Show is an exhibit

To be a bidder (i.e. a prospectivebuyer of original artwork) you must:

    1. Be a registered member ofAnthrocon, as evidenced by yourconvention badge;

    2. Obtain a bidder number at theArt Show table by lling out andsigning a bidder information sheet, acknowledging that you agree to abideby these bidding rules. If you wishto place proxy bids on behalf of

someone not in attendance, please seethe Art Show Director.Areas of the Art Show

There are two distinct areas of theArt Show.

    1. In the General Gallery, you willsee original artwork depicting subjectssuitable for all ages to view. This will beopen for silent (written) bidding duringthe day and early evening Friday

and Saturday, and Sunday morning. If a piece receives enough writtenbids by noon Sunday, it will be sentto the general voice auction Sundayafternoon.

    2. The Mature Gallery is set aside forthe display of original artwork depictingmature subject matter. This will be openduring the same hours as the rest ofthe Art Show Friday and Saturday, andmonitored to keep minors out. Pieces inthis area which receive enough writtenbids by Saturday evening will be sentto a separate voice auction later thatevening.

BiddingEach piece of artwork is tagged with

a Bid Sheet which provides informationabout that piece, including its title, themedium, the name of the artist, andthe minimum bid at which the artist iswilling to sell the piece. If an artist doesnot wish to sell a given piece, it is listedas nfs (Not For Sale).

On the Bid Sheet are several lineswhere you may write down your name, bidder number, and the amount youwish to bid for that item. The amountof the bid must be in whole dollars,at least as much as the minimum bidspecied by the artist, and larger thanany preceding bid on the bid sheet.Write legibly on the next numberedbid line. Do not cross out any previouslywritten bids, including your own. If youmake a mistake in bidding, pleaseinform an Art Show crew member sowe can ensure the Bid Sheet has thecorrect number of empty bid lines.

You may not interfere with orintimidate someone who wants tooutbid you. Allow them to place theirbid, and then outbid them on the next

bid line. If someone tries to keep youfrom placing a bid, seek assistance froman Art Show crew member. Anyonecaught interfering with bidding will beasked to leave the Art Show, and theirbidding privileges revoked.

Artists (or their associates) may notplace bids on their own artwork withthe intent of bidding up the price

unfairly, or to keep other bidders from

    24/38

purchasing a piece in order to retain itto sell elsewhere under more favorablecircumstances. However, they areallowed to place proxy bids on behalfof a customer not in attendance.

Written bidding for General Galleryartwork closes at noon Sunday. The

Art Show will be cleared of all biddersat that time, as detailed below. Pieceswith enough written bids (as shown onthe bid sheet) will be placed in the voiceauction, which begins Sunday at 2 p.m.;all other art will be sold to the personwith the highest written bid, if any.At the voice auction, the art is open tofurther bids by other people. Therefore, you should attend the voice auctionto defend your bids on pieces youstill want to buy. If there are no voicebids, the art will be sold to the personwith the highest written bid. Althoughthere are runners showing off theauction pieces, this is for identication, not admiration. Please take the time toexamine the artwork closely while theshow is open for written bidding!

For pieces in the Mature Gallery, theprocedure is similar, although the timesare different. Written bidding for theMature Gallery closes Saturday at6 p.m. Artwork with enough writtenbids will be placed in a separate voiceauction for mature artwork whichbegins at 11 p.m. Saturday, and runssimilarly to the General Gallery voice

auction, as noted above. All artwork sold by written bid orin either voice auction will availablefor pickup Sunday during sales hours,2 to 5 p.m. Artists have the option ofsetting a Price After Closing. If apiece has received no written bids byclosing time, it may be available at theindicated price Sunday afternoon ifthe artist still wishes to sell it. If this is

the case, the blank bid line #1 will becircled in red. Fill in your name, biddernumber, and the Price After Closingwhen collecting your artwork.

Be careful. When placing a writtenbid on items, assume that you will bethe winning bidder on all of them. Thisway, you will avoid having to pay formore art than you can afford to buy.

If you have reached your limit for Art

Show purchases, wait until you havelost an item to a higher bidder beforebidding on another item. (Keep in mindthat we must collect 7% sales tax onpurchases, so allow for this in yourguring.) We provide handy BiddingRecord forms so you can keep track

of what youve bid on and where itslocated to make it easy for you to ndagain.

Also, return to the Art Show beforeclosing (6 pm Saturday for matureartwork; noon Sunday for everythingelse) to check the bid sheets to see whatitems, if any, you have won by writtenbid and which items will be going to thevoice auction. After closing, becausethe crew is busy getting ready for theauction, we cannot accommodateanyone who wants to check their bidsat that time.

Be serious. Do not make a bidunless you mean it. A bid is a bindingobligation to buy that art at that price.

If you are the winning bidder, youpurchase only the physical possession

of the artwork; the artist retains thecopyright. If you wish to make copies ofa piece you purchase for any purpose, you must negotiate for the right to doso with the artist, whose name andcontact information are on the back ofeach piece or can be obtained from theArt Show Director. (Please note: Artistsare provided with the names and

addresses of those who have purchasedtheir artwork.)Defending Your Bids

When the written bidding closes, crew members will form a movingwall starting at the back of a sectionand moving forward, closing biddingby artist (not by piece, not by panel, not by bay). The closeout path is shownon the Art Show map handout andposter. Closeout is done per artist in abay: if there are three artists in a bay, there will be 3 closeouts in the bay; ifone artist takes up the entire bay, theentire bay closes at once; and if anartist occupies more than one bay, eachof their bays closes separately.

We move quickly, so when the wallgets to an artist you want to bid on,

  • 8/12/2019 Anthrocon 2014 Convention and Dining Guide

    25/38

do your bidding before the auctioneerdeclares the artist closed. We will notclose an artist while bidding is going on,but if there is no bidding, it will closequickly, so dont be timidif you wantto bid, bid!We cant wait for someone tomake up their mind at the last second.

We want you to get your chance to bid,but do it quickly! You will be allowed to defend your

bids, but you may not block anyoneelse from bidding on any piecetheauctioneer and Art Show crew will seethat it doesnt happen. If you are notactively guarding your bids, we ask thatyou clear the aisles at least 10 minutesbefore the show closes. There are a lotof people in the area, and we need tomove them out as quickly as possiblewhen closeout begins. If you are justhaving a conversation with someone, please take it outside the Art Show.

All this allows you to defend bids inmore than one section. The Art Showcrew follows close behind the wall, marking nal bids to ensure that if

youre the last bid, you are the lastbid. Once the wall passes a point, noone except Art Show crew is allowedbeyond it.Sales

Art Show Sales will take placeSunday from 2 to 5 p.m. (If you have anafternoon ride, ight, train or bus tocatch, please ask in advance about early

sales pickup.) At this time you mustpersonally pick up and pay for all itemsof art you have won by written bid orvoice auction. You must show your conbadge for identication, and additionalidentication may be requested.

If you have items in the MatureGallery, these pieces must be paid forand wrapped before you can take themout of the Mature Gallery.

Collect your art from the panels andtables. Do not remove the bid sheets

from the artwork! There will be worktables set up where you then ll out asales slip, writing in the artist name, piece title, and high bid amount foreach piece, as well as your real nameand bidder number. (Use more thanone slip if necessary.)

If you have purchased more piecesthan you can carry, or need access to alocked display case, ask for help froman Art Show crew member.

Once you have lled out your salesslips, go to a cashier, who will double-check the slip against the bid sheets, add

up all the prices and calculate sales taxand total, and take your payment. Weaccept cash, travelers checks, personalchecks, credit cards (Visa, MasterCard,American Express, Discover), and debitcards (all major networks). ID may berequested at time of payment.

You must pick up and pay for yourown purchases, and show the receiptto the entrance guard when you leavethe Art Show (so keep it handy). Allsales are nal and all items are sold asis; refunds will not be issued for itemspurchased in the Art Show for anyreason.

Occasionally there are errors intallying sales slips. We always pay theartist based on the nal bid sheet price;if it turns out we under- or overcharged

you, in the weeks following the con wewill bill you or refund the difference.

Remember: You bid, you buy.Your bid is a binding obligation withAnthrocon and the artist for thepurchase of the artwork. If you fail topick up your artwork and/or fail to payfor it in full, we will contact you in theweeks after the convention and bill you

for the price of the art plus packing andshipping costs (typically $10$20 forthose in the USA). Checks which do notclear the bank will be assessed a servicecharge of at least $25.

Anyone who fails to honor theirmonetary obligations will not beallowed to participate in futureAnthrocon Art Shows, and will be deniedmembership at all future Anthrocon

conventions until all charges are paidin full. Their real name and badge namemay be posted publicly so that othersmay be wary of doing business withthem. Persons who present fraudulentchecks, unauthorized credit cards orcounterfeit money will be reportedimmediately to the authorities.
