WELLS DEFENSE COMMITTEE

An informant advised on May 8, 1957, that theWells Defense Committee was set up bj the Civil RightsCongress as an ad hoc committee of the Civil Rights Con-gress. Its connection with the Civil Rights Congress wasnever publicized however. It hid as its purpose theorganizing and carrying out of defense activities on behalfof WESLEY ROBERT WELLS, a California convict who had beengiven the death sentence for assault of a prison guard.The sentence of WELLS was commuted to life in prison by theGovernor of California in March, 1954. The Welle DefenseCommittee was most active in 1953 and early 1954, however,with the dissolution of the Civil Rights Congress in early1956 the Wells Defense Committee became dormant and has sinceceased to exist.

The Civil Rights Congress has been designated bythe Attorney General of the United Statea pursuant toExecutive Order 10450.
