ITEM 5 CONFIDENTIAL ITEMS

5.1. Examination Results: Semester 2, 2016 Jochen provided an explanation of the results software for new members of the Committee. The software allows a comparison of current and previous sessions to determine if the mean is significantly different from previous iterations of the course. It also compares course results with those achieved in other required courses, as well as the average for all courses undertaken, highlighting where there are significant differences (cohort comparison). Note that early year students will have little by way of comparisons. Ideally the graph should be symmetrical. Jochen noted an anomaly on the >15 section of the graph as being an unexplained issue for which further investigation will be required. The Committee reviewed the results for the second half of 2016 and recommended the actions recorded below: Research School of Computer Science COMP1040 Students are receiving higher marks than other courses but this is consistent

over the years, possibly inflated by the large number of later year students enrolled in the course. It is a 1st year course so comparison is limited. There is no final exam. Action: Convenor should consider individual assessment. RSCS should look at adding a prerequisite that prevents later year students from enrolling in the course. Results approved

COMP1110 The online exam format worked really well and should be considered by RSE. Results approved

COMP1140 Results approved COMP1510 Large percentage of HD’s however this is a higher ATAR course.

Results approved

COMP1720 Feedback from students is that they find this a hard course. Results approved

COMP1730 Large percentage of fails which is an ongoing issue. Effects Engineering students. Uwe reported early disengagement of students, with students often shocked by the initial assessments. The course is designed so that NCN’s cannot be received, the majority of students receiving an N. Student feedback is poor. The percentage of HD’s is falling. The option of moderating was put to the vote, the majority in favour of an increase. Action: RSCS to conduct a cohort analysis and address issues for future offerings. Results to be scaled up by two (2) marks per student

COMP2130 Results approved COMP2310 Distribution has improved

COMP2560 Results approved COMP2600 High mean and large percentage of HD’s. This course has been significantly

moderated at School level, and the concern is that further moderation will make results unstable. The final exam too easy with a large number of students achieving 100%. Allowing additional material into the exam contributed. School has taken action but need to ensure this is addressed for next iteration. Action: Review assessment Results approved

COMP2610 Large number of HD’s and a higher mean. New convenor this iteration. Results have been moderated at School level but needs to be addressed for future offerings. Results approved

COMP3100 No fail grades. Higher mean but this is consistent with previous years. Results approved

COMP3300 School has moderated 1.5 marks up. Harsh marking of assessment item. Results approved

COMP3500 Low number of enrolments Results approved

COMP3550 Low number enrolments. Results approved

COMP3560 Results approved COMP3600 Observed no PX students over past 5 years

Results approved

COMP3710 Results approved COMP3900 Higher mean but historically consistent. Convenor gave individual feedback

throughout the course which may have contributed to the higher results. Results approved

COMP4500 Results approved COMP4540 Results approved COMP4550 Queried why out of 9 students, there were 2 x RP’s an NCN and a DA? The

RP’s are due to the student’s reports not being marked in time. If either of these are graduating students, results will be submitted by 9.00am Monday 28th November and the Committee has authorised Jochen to approve. NCN was a result of a student failing. Results approved

COMP4560 Results approved COMP4600 Results approved COMP4650 Significantly higher average than students in comparable COMP courses.

Moderation put to vote with the majority in favour of scaling down. Feedback to Convenor to review the large number of HD’s and D’s. Results to be scaled down by two (2) marks per student

COMP6240 The Masters students had a large number of HD’s and D’s, possibly because the assessment may not be at appropriate level and should be reviewed. Convenor commented that Masters students better organised and work better than the undergraduate students. Committee agreed to moderate marks down by 2 to be consistent with other moderations.

was no distinction between students. Convenor explained that these were 4 exceptional students deserving of their mark. Results approved

COMP6311 Results approved COMP6330 Results approved COMP6390 Results approved COMP6466 Results approved COMP6470 Results approved COMP6490 Masters assessment scheme adequate. Undergraduate marks scaled down

by 2 so this course should be moderated for consistency. Results to be scaled down by two (2) marks per student

COMP6710 Results approved COMP6720 An obvious and concerning discrepancy between the undergraduate and

Masters students, possibly because not enough attention being paid to Masters assessments. It was reported the Convenor was highly engaged, as were the Masters students, however the undergraduates not buying in as well as the Masters students. The Committee determined there is a case for moderation, however decided against as the undergraduate cohort was not moderated. Action: Feedback to the Convenor to review the Masters cohort and look at a solution. Results approved

COMP6730 The undergraduate equivalent was moderated. It appears there are issues with the undergraduate assessment but not with the postgraduate. Results approved

COMP8110 The mean is significantly below historical. New Convenor this iteration and different content to previous. Also had 5 or 6 plagiarism cases. The Convenor is working to improve the course. The Committee agreed to moderate the grades up. Results to be scaled up by two (2) marks per student

COMP8190 Convenor to look at standard deviation Results approved

COMP8460 Results approved COMP8650 Results approved COMP8701 Results approved COMP8705 Results approved COMP8715 Results approved COMP8800 Results approved Research School of Engineering ENGN1217 Large number of HD’s an issue. The Convenor has previously been asked to

address and there has been an improvement but it is still an issue. Need to articulate to the Convenor that they are moving in the right direction but need to keep going. Case for moderation to reinforce message.

The Committee authorises Jochen to make determination on final grades for any graduating students. Action: Assessment to be reviewed. Uwe to assist with moderation Results referred back to school for moderation

ENGN3230 Approximately one quarter of the class took up the opportunity to connect with Canberra Innovation Network, and it was noted by external stakeholders that the quality of this cohort is far greater than previous years. Moderation was put to vote with the majority voting to scale down. Results to be scaled down two (2) marks per student

ENGN3334 Exam paper was too long and no one finished, resulting in low scores. The results have been moderated at school level, with the exam marks being scaled up by 18. There were also several plagiarism cases. Action: Assessment scheme and exam to be reviewed Results approved

5.2. University Medal The Chair noted that there have been significant changes to the University Medal policy and procedure in 2016, notably the changes to medal quotas. The first quota allows the College to nominate 3% of the total graduate cohort per Semester, noting that there is an undergraduate pool and a graduate pool. The second quota allows for the College to nominate only 1 medal per subject area, which may impact on CECS nominations. The College does have the option to invoke a process to have 2 medals per subject area, however this process is arduous. Research School of Computer Science The Research School of Computer Science put forward one nomination, John Aslanides, for the University Medal. John is a Masters student, studying the Masters of Computing (Advanced) and has a GPA of 7.0. The Committee endorsed John’s nomination. No nominations were received for undergraduate students. The rationale being the group projects bring down the marks of exceptional students. Discussion is taking place within the School around program structure so as not to adversely affect higher achieving students. Honours student Matthew Alger has achieved results in Computer Science that would warrant a medal nomination, however as the student is enrolled in an embedded honours program owned by Science, he is ineligible for nomination by CECS, and must be put forward by Science. This was confirmed by the Examinations, Graduations and Prizes Office. Jochen to follow up with Marnie as this rule does not seem equitable. Action: Jochen to discuss with Marnie Hughes-Warrington the process for nominating students completing honours in a College outside of their home College.

Research School of Engineering The Research School of Engineering put forward three nominations, Andrew Jamieson, Avinash Upadhya and Taeho Jung, all enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering R&D with GPA’s of 7.0, 7.0 and 6.914 respectively. Andrew’s thesis mark was low however his Supervisor agreed that the mark wasn’t indicative of Andrew’s ability and submitted a supporting statement to this effect. The second and third nominees were similar in terms of academic marks. Avinash recorded thesis grades of 81 and 93, the later thesis holding more weighting, making him a strong candidate. Jung recorded thesis results of 88 and 87, however has a slightly lower GPA at 6.91. Jochen suggested that all three Engineering nominees be endorsed and the Committee agreed.

Resolution That the Committee:

1. Endorse the University Medal nominations for the Research School of Computer Science and the Research School of Engineering

2. Jochen to discuss with Marnie Hughes-Warrington the process for nominating students completing honours in a College outside of their home College.

PART 2 REPORTS

ITEM 6 REPORT FROM THE CHAIR

The Chair briefed the Committee on the following items:

MADA – The chair reported that the first year of the MADA program has been successfully completed. Three courses were offered, one of these being a COMP course. Students have given overwhelmingly positive feedback. However, the Public Service is showing lesser levels of commitment than they had agreed to, having not identified a cohort for 2017. Jochen will be meeting with the Public Service to discuss their commitment.

*Item S.1: Structural Requirements of Majors, Minors and Specialisations

Purpose To discuss the structure of majors and propose some amendments to the policy. Recommendation That the Education Standards and Quality Committee provide feedback to [email protected] by 31 March 2017 on the recommended changes to requirements for majors, minors and specialisations. Action Item Area Responsible Submit feedback to [email protected] by 31 March 2017 All College Representatives

ACTION REQUIRED [Select as appropriate] For discussion For decision For information College response

Background The current policy states “Requirements for majors, minors and specialisations must be self-contained”. In highly structured curricular including those in many science disciplines where there is a development of knowledge, skills and competencies from 1000 to 2000 to 3000 level courses, this requirement for a major to be self-contained causes significant issues. Under such circumstances, the pre-requisites for 2000 and 3000 level courses will mean that majors are almost always made up of 1000 and 2000 level courses with few or no 3000 level courses, or alternatively contain such a restricted set of courses that there is no flexibility to satisfy the different interests and backgrounds of students. We believe that both these outcomes are not educationally appropriate. This requirement becomes even more of an issue for interdisciplinary majors. Past practice in Science (before the implementation of this policy) has been to explicitly identify the pre-requisites required but not necessarily include all prerequisites within the major. However with the number of students now undertaking Flexible Double Degrees it has become increasingly difficult to ensure that students can take the major plus the pre-requisites and meet degree requirements without having to undertake extra courses outside of the program, (with negative impacts to visa study times and CSP funding), as the pre-requisites are not necessarily explicit to students. Proposal One solution that may address this issue is by allowing more flexible, but optional co-requisite structures for majors. The university already has a similar structure where a specialisation has to be accompanied by a co-requisite major. We now propose the reverse: that is, a major could require a co-requisite minor or specialisation such that the 12 courses together encompass all the pre-requisites as well as the courses required to meet the learning outcomes. This would allow the complete requirements to be explicitly and unambiguously available to students on Programs and Courses. It is not proposed that this change to policy would result in changes to Program Orders, and other than requiring the co-requisite minor would in every other respect be equivalent to any other minor and would fulfil Program Order requirements where a minor is specified. Proposed wording could be:

Requirements for majors and minors are self-contained. Where additional pre-requisites are required to allow a student to complete the major, a co-requisite minor is also specified, such that the combination of major and minor is self-contained.

Where additional pre-requisites are required to allow a student to complete a specialisation, the major is also specified, such that the combination of major and specialisation is self-contained.
