HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman
god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the
world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,
Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the
Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star
Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.
Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.
We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in
our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

Greeting from your Captain,
This months Anvil is on James Doohan. He was Montgomery “Scotty” Scott on the Original Star Trek.
Hopefully we found some interesting things about the man that brought “Scotty” to life.
We have several ways that you can keep up with what is happen on the ship. We have both Facebook and
Twitter feeds to keep you informed on what is up. The addresses are on the Table of Contents page in the
second column.
Next month we will be giving tribute to Star Trek: Voyager. Think what you would like to say about it and
send it to [email protected]. Also think about what you would like to see next year in the Anvil. We
need ideas so we can plan what might be interesting to us and others who read the Anvil.
I want to give special thanks to Brenda Miller and Donald Arnold for their work in helping bring the Anvil
to life. Donald has contributed his Star Trek stories and several reviews. Brenda is the editor and also makes
the Anvil look profession. Thank you, folks.

Greetings,
We are into July now and recently celebrated the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th.
Have you ever wondered what type of men the signers were? Here are a few facts that answer that question.
First, the youngest delegate was Edward Rutledge, age 26 and the oldest was Ben Franklin, age 70. Two of
the men would later become president: John Adams (second) and Thomas Jefferson, (third). On a very trivial
note, the most interesting name to me is Button Gwinnett.
Also, 24 were lawyers, 11 were merchants, 9 were farmers and large plantation owners. These were men of
means and well educated, not rabble rousers. They signed the document and pledged their “Lives, fortunes and
sacred honor” to the cause of freedom from Great Britain.
Some of them paid dearly for their signature by having their possessions seized. Others had their family
members jailed or they had to stay in hiding to avoid capture by the British.
Now to ships business. We will be celebrating the summer cookout on July 11 at Pete and Sue Ellen’s. Pete
will fire up the grill about 4:00 so bring something to grill. For details see Pete’s announcement on the clubs
web site. That’s all this month.

Ensign Donald Arnold has been busy. He has earned three confirmed Cadet Star Awards: College of
Communications, Romulan Orientation College, and Starfleet Academy Orientation College. He is also being
mentored as the Director of Caitian Orientation College. Congratulations, Donald! NOTE: Caitian is the cat
like race that is best known by Lt. M’Ress of the Star Trek Animated series.
Crewmen Sandra Holsey passed her Officer Training School (OTS) with Distinction. Congratulations,
Sandra!
(If you have any news or accomplishments you would like to share with the group please email them to me at:
[email protected]. Also your personal updates can give your Captain added info to help get you
recognition and awards at Summit for your accomplishments).
SSttaarrfflleeeett MMaarriinnee CCoorrppss Greetings,
The 654th MSG is looking for members. There is a completely different set of Academy schools for those
trying to get the Boothby awards. There is no pressure in joining. There are two categories: Active which
means all ranks will be Marine ranks, and Reserve which means you stay primarily Fleet and only use Marine
ranks when doing marine stuff. Contact Lt. General Neil Yawn, if you are interested or have questions.
Looking to boost your Boothby Awards? The Starfleet Marines Academy may be your answer. Check out
what SFMC Academy has for you.
Lt. General Neil Yawn, OIC 1 BN, 2BDE, OIC 654 MSG
Do you mind a little advice? Starfleet captains are like children. They
want everything right now and they want it their way. But the secret is to
give them only what they need, not what they want.

James Doohan was born on March 3, 1920 to William and Sarah
(Montgomery) Doohan. He was the youngest of four children. William Doohan
was a Pharmacist, Veterinarian, and a dentist. Sarah (Montgomery) Doohan was
a homemaker. The family originally was from Bangor, County Down, Ireland
but had move to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada were James was born.
They move to Sarnia, Ontario where James went to Sarnia Collegiate Institute
and Technical School (SCITS) were he excelled in mathematics and science.
James Doohan in my opinion is Star Trek. William Shatner may have been
the Captain but Mr. Doohan did more than any of the other for the show. The
part of Scotty was crafted by him; he auditioned several accents to and when
asked which would be best he said, "If you want an engineer, in my experience
the best engineers are Scotsmen.” He also named the character Montgomery
Scott in honor of his grandfather. He was not only Scotty but also lent his voice
to Sargon in Return to Tomorrow, The M-5 in The Ultimate Compute, The Mission Control Voice in
Assignment: Earth, and the Oracle in For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky in the original
series. When the animated series came out he did 53 voices across the 22 episodes including Captain Robert
April and the alien navigator, Lt. Arex.
When the movies came out, Mr. Doohan added yet another contribution. He made up the Klingon and
Vulcan languages used in the films. Marc Okrand, a professional linguist, would make a working Klingon
language with even rules of grammar but it was based on what Mr. Doohan had made up. Star Trek: The Next
Generation would not have been complete without Laforge meeting the great engineer Montgomery Scott: the
episode Relics gave us that meeting. It also gave us the memorable line “N-C-C-1-7-0-1. No bloody A - B - C
- or D!
Like many actors who get type cast, Mr. Doohan had trouble getting work after Star Trek. His love of the
fans let him embrace the conventions and make a living for his family until other acting jobs and the Star Trek
movies came along.
Many of Mr. Doohan fans took up engineering, just like many of Deforest Kelley’s fans who took up
medicine. Because of this, Milwaukee School of Engineering presented James Doohan with an honorary degree
in engineering. Astronaut Neil Armstrong, an engineer before he participated in NASA's Apollo program,
personally told Doohan on stage at Doohan's last public appearance, "From one old engineer to another, thanks,
mate."{
Mr. Doohan was married 3 times. Two of the marriages produced a total of 7 kids. His twin sons
Christopher and Montgomery by his first marriage appeared in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Christopher,
with the help of Mr. Doohan’s fans, was also in Star Trek Into Darkness. Christopher also plays the character
Scotty in the Web series Star Trek Continues.
Mr. Doohan was also a war hero. He was a Lt in the Royal Canadian Artillery. His first combat duty was at
Normandy storming Juno beach on D-Day (June 6, 1944). He led his men through a mine field to higher
ground. They didn’t set the mines off because the mines were set to blow up tanks and the men were not heavy
enough to set them off. That night while Mr. Doohan was crossing between command posta a nervous sentry
shot him six times; four in the leg, one in the chest, and one through his right middle finger. If it weren’t for a
The Anvil NCC-2004
USS Hephaestus 5 Always Onward
silver cigarette case given to him by his brother, the shot in his chest would have killed him. The loss of his
right finger was concealed in many episodes of Star Trek but occasionally can be seen. D-Day was the only
combat that Mr. Doohan saw. After his recovery he was reassigned by the Canadian Artillery to fly for the
Royal Canadian Air Force. He was known as the craziest pilot in the Canadian Air Force.
At the end of his life Mr. Doohan was suffering from Parkinson's disease, diabetes mellitus, and pulmonary
fibrosis. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease which lead him to retire from conventions and acting in
August of 2004. At home in Redmond, Washington on July 20, 2005 at 5:30 in the morning we lost James
Doohan to the stars. His ashes are now in Puget Sound and Outer Space. Although it was actually never said in
the series we would like to say, “Beam me up Scotty.”

Did you ever what to try your hand at the Kobayashi Maru test or pilot a starship from an active bridge?
You may be able to do this next year. EMS Entertainment, the leader in interactive immersive exhibitions, is
producing The Starfleet Academy Experience and doing so under license by CBS Consumer Products. This
experience will immerse you in “Trek Tech”. You will go through orientation and continue into a rigorous
training program that will teach science, engineering, medicine and command courses. When completed you
will graduate and be sent to a bridge simulation on the deck of a starship. The experience will be based on
actual science by learning about the emerging technologies of tricorders, NASA warp drive theory and the latest
on phasers and transporters. The experience will debut at Canada Aviation and Space Museum (CASM) in
Ottawa, Canada on May 26, 2016. For more information visit www.StarfleetAcademyTour.com. You can also

James Horrner, 1953- 2015
James Horner, Oscar winning Composer, conductor and orchestrator died June 22, 2015 in a plane he was
piloting North of Santa Barbara, CA. He wrote the scores for both Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan and Star Trek
III: Search for Spock. He also had an uncredited role in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. In 2009 James
Horner told The Los Angles Time,
“My job… is to make sure every turn of the film; it's something the audience can feel with their
heart. When we lose a character, when somebody wins, when somebody loses, when someone
disappears… at all times I'm keeping track, constantly, of what the heart is supposed to be feeling.
That is my primary role."
The FAA and NTSB are looking in to the crash. Mr. Horner is survived by his wife Sarah and his two
daughters. The Hephaestus sends condolences to James Horner’s Family Friends and Fans.

Trek Movie
The working title of the movie is Star Trek Beyond. This seems to be
official as the director Justin Lin tweeted it on June 29th
. Also Paramount
registered the name with the Motion Picture Association of America and acquire
the web address StarTrekBeyond.com even though they have not come out
officially with the title. Simon Pegg has used the Title in his Blog as well. This
may change as we are still a year away. This is also not the last movie as Chris
Pine and Zachary Quinto have both signed on for four movies with a big raise.

CBS not pulling fan films from YouTube
At the beginning of June the Fan film Star Trek Continues Episode 4 was pulled form YouTube. A message
said that it was pulled for copyright infringements by CBS. This was not the case. CBS and the Star Trek
Continues crew have a good relation. The reason it was taken down has not been discovered but it is believed
that the YouTube’s automated Content ID wrongly flag the episode to be taken down.
CBS did sent a cease and desist order to Normand Spinrad and Star Trek Phase II production for his story
He Walked Among Us. Nomand Spinrad, writer of the episode The Doomsday Machine, was going to direct his
He Walked Among Us script for Phase II but CBS said they couldn’t because of them owning the copyrights.
This is confusing because they allowed an unused script by David Gerrold, Blood and Fire, to be produced.
CBS said that Mr. Spinrad had rights to the script but they also had rights that they were exercising. I read the
synopsis of Mr. Spinrads script and it might have to do with how it is very similar to a couple of classic Star
Trek episodes where Mr. Gerrold’s script was a Next Gen script that was adapted to Classic. {
CBS does give some lead way to fans to make fan Films. They are just not as lenient as George Lucas was.

Bill stood watching what unfolded on the view screen; a
Romulan fleet, a Borg-Federation fleet, and a single
starship housing an individual with a staff powerful
enough to rip them all to pieces (speaking of himself of
course). One word was all it took. He could blast the
enemy into next week. However, he decided against it.
He didn't want the whole quadrant gunning for him
because of his powers. He also wanted to know what the
Romulans had to do with it. He ordered, “Hail the
Romulan lead ship. I want to know who's running the
show on their end.” The hail was answered, but not
expected. James Kirk and Ambassador Spock were taken
aback as they saw Khan. Spock in particular was shocked
to see Sela. Khan smiled and said, “James Kirk, Admiral,
correct? No matter. Soon you shall be known as the late
James Kirk.” The older man looked to the screen and
replied, “Khan! What business have you got in all this?
How are you even alive?” Khan sneered back, “That
seems to be a popular question from you, you ignorant
swine. You don't get it. I must be completely destroyed in
order to die! Explosions, worlds falling apart, none of that
will cause my destruction. I, though, will cause yours,
Kirk. I will kill you and walk over your cold corpse to
take your ship… and then Earth.” That was a cue. The
biggest ship around, a fused Starfleet Sovereign Class-
Borg tech ship dropped out of warp. It hailed the two
ships. James Nicks, now showing all the Borg implants
left in him by the New Collective, looked at his screen
coldly and said, “Irrelevant beings, you've been betrayed
by lack of knowledge. The only one walking over corpses
will be me. William Kirk and crew will surrender, Khan
and Sela will be assimilated, and I will take Earth and all
other planets surrounding it, making the New Collective
the chief inter-planetary government. You will all bow
before me.”
This started the firefight. The ships fired on the docks,
the ships, and each other. Bill, Spock III, James Kirk,
Ambassador Spock, Stephanie, and Alexander beamed to
the surface to meet Khan, Sela, and James. Bill shouted,
“Spock, Stephanie, and Alexander look for ways to shut
down any of the Borg's tech from down here. I'll handle
Nicks, Grandpa's got Khan, and the Ambassador can
handle Sela. We have no time to lose! Go!” The three
rushed off as the three figures of evil approached. Khan
attacked Admiral Kirk immediately. They fought,
throwing each other to the ground and beating each other
with their fists and rocks and anything else they could find,
as slowly they went up the slopes of a nearby mountain
which housed a volcano.
Sela tried to tackle Spock and was met with the great
strength of the half Vulcan man. They mostly struggled
until Sela gained the upper hand and drew out a knife.
Bill pulled out his staff and Nicks pulled up weapons on
his armor. Nicks fired rays of blazing energy which Bill
deflected one by one. Bill set off a blast of energy from
his staff which sent Nicks back to the ground, his armor
and weapons sparking. He got up, rushed and grabbed
Bill; his electricity flowing through Bill causing him to
howl with pain.
James Kirk and Khan struggled on the edge of the
volcano which bubbled beneath them. They both teetered
on the edge when James Kirk gained just enough strength
to shove Khan down. It was just like the situation with
Kruge on Genesis. He kicked and kicked, finally sending
Khan into the molten fire, killing him once and for all.
Sela was almost ready to stab Spock but was met with a
deflected Borg blast from Nicks. She dropped the knife
and seethed. Spock nerve pinched the Romulan woman,
rendering her incapacitated.
Bill and Nicks were engulfed in an electrical field.
Shocking bolts hit the ground around them, scorching it.
A blinding flash sent metal flying. Nicks lay on the
ground, electrocuted. Bill got up, suffering only some
mild burns from the shock. Sela was arrested, the Borg
shut down, and the Romulans defeated. What was left of
Starfleet came to pick up prisoners and impound ships.
Bill was offered an Admiral rank, but turned it down,
saying he wasn't ready to give up the chair yet. With that,
a long journey came to an end. Earth was saved, our
heroes triumphant, and the book closed on this particular
story. The tale at large, though, is not done. Bill and the
crew's adventures will continue in the Anvil, continuing to
boldly go where no one has gone before. THE END

Reviews Jurassic World by: Captain MarkAdam Miller
(Spoiler Alert – May be spoilers in the article)
Going into this I was thinking: okay, I like dinosaurs as much of the next guy but come on haven’t we had enough of
the genetic dinosaur park that the attraction will kill the guest if one small thing goes wrong? I was going to skip it but it
had Chris Pratt (Star Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy) which made me think he should make it fun to watch. Also the
dinosaurs are neat to see on the big screen.
This was a good movie. It had several references to the previous movies for the fans. It also was a good story that
you didn’t need to see the other movies to enjoy it. It is nice to finally see a working Jurassic Park. It made me want to
visit. It did have a few things that you might see in a park like Sea World like the trick Mosasaurus. One of the
interesting rides was the gyrospheres that made one able to roam around with the dinosaurs without being in harms way
(i.e. stepped on or eaten).
It had several people I know form other things. B.D Wong (Law& Order: SVU) who was in the first movie is back
playing the scientist Dr. Henry Wu. He was the lead scientist in making the dinosaurs which he is doing again in this
movie. He has more to do in this movie instead of playing the straight man to Jeff Goldblum’s antics. Vincent D’Onofrio
(Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Daredevil and Men in Black) has a good part as the antagonist in the story. You don’t
know what he is up to but right away you get a feeling you won’t like him. Also a new person for Scifi, Nick Robinson
who is from the TV show Melissa and Joey. He does a good performance as the older brother who has to protect his
younger brother. His younger brother is played by Ty Simpkins who you may remember from Ironman 3. So Law &
Order Universe and the Marvel Universe are well represented.
The reason I say this is only a good film is that it does rehash some of the same issues that were covered before.
Should we be resurrecting something that has been extinct for millions of years? How long will the Park attract people
before they get bored? How do you keep upping the WOW factor so people will keep coming back? And finally who is
going to exploit the use of the project for something other than what it was intended? All these questions were in the
original movie and the sequels. A point in the film’s favor: what previously took 3 films to pose the questions is now
done in one film.
One bad filming error was that when the T-Rex fights the I-Rex (Indominus Rex) it was hard to tell which Rex was
which. In addition, I would have some how made Hoskins’ (Vincent D’onofrio) intentions not be shown until further into
the movie. . They bring his intentions out too soon and you dislike him from the start.
I recommend you go see it in the theater because it is nice to see the dinosaurs on the big screen. Chris Pratt does not
disappoint even though my wife and I keep calling him Star Lord since we know him as that. I also want to get one of
those gryoshperes. That would be cool driving down the higway.

While on an Away Mission Roy Green called me down to the A/A labs about a week later to give his report on the Gorn manuscript.
He said, “The bad news is that it is not Gorn. They had taken an older text and had added their findings to it
and rebound it for research purposes. The good news is it actually older than what the A/A team originally
thought because they were going on the added Gorn pages. Ensign Donald Arnold helped show the text to be a
Vulcan/Romulan manuscript before the time of Surak. The actual dating of it shows that it is a 5000 year old
translation of an Iconian text that the text says was 200,000 years old at the time they were translating it. The
translation does refer to a group of planets near the center of the galaxy having interesting food and materials.”
Roy continued, “I only see two problems. One, that the Iconians are not known for warp technology because
of there Gateway systems and two the planets’ placement is over 205,000 years out of synch with the way the
galaxy is today. The red sun that it refers to could be a blue or white sun by now or even gone super nova by
now. You do remember what happen to Krypton when its Red sun exploded?” ”Yeah Roy”, I said, “I wasn’t
actually around when Krypton’s sun exploded but I remember the story”. {
Roy handed me a data chip to give to navigation. I headed to Stellar Cryptography to meet with Pete and
his navigation team. On the way I passed Brenda Tiner and checked if she had everything she needed for her
work. She said her quarters and labs were all she needed to finish her work. I wasn’t in on what she was
working on and Starfleet said it was need to know. Brenda promised it wouldn’t blow up the ship so I let it go.
I met with Pete and gave him the data chip. I asked Pete if his team could give us a place to look so we could
tell Starfleet what we would like to do. By this time we were done surveying the Gorn planet and were ready to
say goodbye to the Gorns and head back to the nearest Starbase. Hopefully Starfleet will let us look for what I
am calling the planet of Milk and Honey because of the materials that it supposedly provides. After telling Pete
to head to the nearest Starbase I headed to the mess to see what Lt. Lynnette Yawn had made to eat. I hope it is
her meatloaf I like so well.
While on an Away Mission is a fictional account of things that the Hephaestus might run into on her Voyages. Have a
suggestion of a planet to visit, a creature to encounter . . . then send me your Ideas and I will write it up. -

Hunt for the Icon Did you find the five Icons last month? Last month’s Icon was G. If you did not find them all they were:

2. X.O.’s Briefing at the end of the paragraph
3. Treasury Report attending Balance
4. Star Trek News at the end of the paragraph on Sir Christopher Lee
5. While on away Mission at the end of the story.
I hope you found them all. This Month five { (ships)are hidden in the Anvil. The five doesn’t include the

Greetings, fellow Hephaestus officers! As you know I was recently promoted to Director of the Caitian Orientation
College. I have therefore decided to plug Academy courses and highlights. For this first entry, I would simply like to
discuss the College at which I have taken the helm. Without over specifying anything, I can say that the College, of
course, centers around the Caitian people and culture. I highly recommend these courses given that they are not overly
difficult, they provide insight on a species that is not covered as highly on Star Trek as some would like, and they are
overall just a fun experience. To speak of the Academy in general, I'd say it's definitely a fun hobby as well as a good
opportunity to meet some of the other fleet officers. Many of the Directors and staff I've studied under and worked with
have been excellent people and there are courses to cover anything and everything you can imagine. As many know,
there are the main courses you have to take to qualify for certain ranks and positions, but there's some courses people
don't know about. For instance, did you know that there are courses regarding comic characters? What about Lord of
the Rings? Not interested in pop culture, sci-fi, or fantasy courses? There are some very cool real life courses that teach
interesting things. There are courses on English, economics, literature, mathematics, and countless other subjects. So,
come by the Academy and browse our courses, maybe even take a few. Enjoy!
