KCB Voi Rally Round 3 of 8

Legendary driver Ian Duncan emerged the overall winner of the East African Safari Rally organized KCB Voi Rally after

beating Carl “Flash” Tundo and Baldev Chager to second and third overall positions respectively.

All in all, Tundo and Duncan had to contend with playing second fiddle to Chager who consolidated his lead in the Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC).

Nevertheless, Chager still lead the KNRC series at that particular juncture with 190 points followed by Duncan and Tundo who then tied on second place with 140 points.

Duncan won three out of five stages beating defending Champion Carl “Flash” Tundo to second position incidentally with a mere 26 seconds while Baldev Singh Chager -the “Flying Sikh”- drove to seal the podium position only on his second outing in the Mitsubishi EVOX car.

TWO WHEEL DRIVEDalbir Thethy and Julius Mwachuya in a Toyota Conquest claimed their maiden

victory in the Two Wheel Drive category in 30th overall place.

Second in 2WD was Dalbir’s brother Charan Thethy who returned 32nd navigated by Kigondu Kareithi in a Daewoo Cielo.

Tundo had this to say after returning his EVO9 in second overall position: “In the first section we had no power so we lost quite a bit of time but we pulled that back in the second one.”

Chager on his part said: “The rally was a mix of everything. Taita hills was a stage that we really didn’t know actually what could happen. It’s one of the nicest stages I have ever done- fast flowing and sometimes twisty.

Youngster Quentin Mitchell cruised his Subaru N16 to 4th place, 3.33minutes behind Duncan.

Jassi Chatthe of Team Kibos was fifth 3.48minutes behind Duncan while Azar Anwar settled for 6th with an underpowered EVO8.Manvir Baryan settled for seventh place.

DUNCAN Clinches Nakuru Rally

Legendary Ian Duncan and his partner Amaar Slatch were all smiles subse-quent to clinching the Rift Valley Mo-tor & Sports Club (RVM&SC) organized

KCB Mobi Bank Nakuru Rally in Baringo County.

Duncan had his campaign effectively sewn-up when the event’s pacesetter Carl “Flash” Tundo suffered an excruciating puncture on the repeat run of the 16.6 Km Alphega-Hilltop stage which was located in the extensive sisal farm-fields of Mogotio.

Tundo was leading the rally by a pretty good margin from Duncan going into the latter stages but had to contend with playing second fiddle.

Tundo settled for second place with Baldev Chager sealing off the podium dash.

Fourth was Kisumu based Jassi Chatthe and Gugu Panesar who also won KNRC Division 2 Class while Issa Amwari won Division 3 in a career best 5th place driving a Silverspread Mitsubishi Lancer EVO9.

Geoff Bell and Tim Challen were actually the top Classic Car Cup drivers in a Datsun 240Z but since they weren’t eligible to score points, Malcolm Delstro in 25th place ran away with maximum points.

The early morning run in Gicheha which was run as the power stage by Kenya’s first ever clerk of the course Lynn Tundo saw four cars roll out of the rally.

Other casualties were Victor Okundi, Jona-than Somen in the Classic car Cup, Izhar Mirza with gearbox problems.

Cavenagh retired in the early morning Gicheha farm stage when the rear left drive shaft snapped. The first section in Gicheha farm turned out to be a very slippery drive. This is where the Mitsubishi Evo 8 driven by Azar Anwar and Julius Ngigi rolled.

This was Anwar’s first roll in 15 years since the Equator rally edition of 1998 when he in-cidentally won his maiden KNRC diadem. The damages to his car was indeed superficial.

“It was actually a slow corner with a hairpin right and we were not at high speed. Our front wheel hit the inside bank which threw the car on its roof within split seconds. It took us a long time to put back the car back on its wheels so we retired,” Azar said.

Homeboy Fahd Bary and Shameer Yusuf caused quite a steer on the initial run of the Kipsyenan Primary spectator stage when their EVO9 contraption rolled; but the crew had their Evo9 pushed back up by spectators to complete their run in a credible 12th position.

The RVMSC round saw crews tackle 170km

of competitive driving and liaison distance of 215km.

A total of 51 cars were flagged off at KCB Menengai Crater Branch by Nakuru County Governor Kinuthia Mbugua and KCB Board Director Ngeny Biwott.

For the Nairobi based Toyota Sprinter GT pair of Mwenda and Njoroge, this went down as their third career win following previous vic-tories in Nanyuki and Eldoret last year.Mwenda made up for his retirement in Voi.

“It’s a great feeling to finally break duck and win a rally this year! And crowning it by win-ning all the days’ stages and the power stage price money (of KES. 10,000),” said Mwenda who finished second in the opening two rallies in Kajiado and Nyeri.

Issa Amwari/Job Njiru

Rajbir Rai/Supee Soin

Youngsters Issa Amwari and Rajbir Rai are no doubt the surprise package of the 2013 Kenya National Rally Championship; what with occasional flashes of brilliance witnessed in the past two rallies.Rajbir, son of the legendary two-times Kenya champion Sarbi Rai, started his racing career at

Jamhuri Park on buggies and has seen his career grow in leaps and bounds since upgrading from the ex-Deep Chana’s VW Golf GTI to the current Mitsubishi Lancer EVOX.Rajbir finished the KCB Nakuru Rally in a credible seventh overall position and went one better in Safari with a dazzling 6th overall place. Rajbir’s steady rise and strong-willed journey to follow in the footsteps of his father has been attributed to the guidance and tactics imparted to him by veteran navigator Supee Soin who has meticulously called his pace-notes since the youngster joined the rally sport a couple of months ago. Supee, a former Chairman of the Rallies Commission, is indeed Sarbi’s former navigator.During Safari, a hard-charging Rajbir stunned all and sundry for twice setting fifth fastest stage times in the 24.2km Konza stage and 31.05 Andy’s Corner stage. In Nakuru, Rajbir set two fifth fastest times in CS4 and CS5 and improved it to third fastest in the last stage (CS8) demonstrating evidently to his adversaries that he was no pushover.Issa Amwari sponsored by Silverspread Limited of Meru in a Mitsubishi Lancer EVO9 stunned all and sundry during Nakuru Rally when he wrapped up his spirited campaign in fifth overall position, contrary to all expectations. Issa savored fourth fastest stage times in CS6 and 6th fastest in CS2, a clear indication of his uncanny knack on four wheels. Save for CS8, Issa ran every other stage in Nakuru within the top-ten range, another good indication that he was coming to grips with the new EVO9 he first sat on earlier in the season.“It’s been a steady learning curve for us as a team and we are happy that we were able to defy all odds to be on the top ten in most of the stage runs,” said Issa’s navigator Job Njiru.

KCB Safari Rally Round 5 of 8

By ABDUL [email protected]

Baldev Chager goes into the history books following his major victory in one of the toughest rounds of the African Rally Championship

yesterday.Dubbed as one the ‘Flying Singhs’ and

thus, following the footsteps of Joginder Singh, Chager’s win in the 61st edition of the KCB Safari Rally, places the young driver alongside some of the finest drivers Kenya has ever produced in the history of the Kenya National Rally Championship series.

‘’It is a fantastic moment for me to have won the event I used to follow as an young boy. The feelings are beyond imagination. My navigator Ravi Soni, service crew and sponsors Kabras Sugar and family are strong part of this historic achievement,’’ said Chager at the end of the three-day competition.

Driving a Mitsubishi LancerEvo10, Chager literally led from start to finish, avoiding mishaps which cost other leading drivers dearly.

Chager, who made his rallying debut in the 1995 Clubman Championship with second overall finish, has literally won all the major titles in the sport of motor rallying in Kenya.

Azar Anwar, one of the longest running competitors in the competition and winner here in 2008, was placed in second overall in yet another Mitsubishi Lancer. His navigator, Julius Ngigi becomes the first ever member of the clergy to accomplish a round of the status of the Safari Rally.

Quentin Mitchell broke the Mitsubishi monopoly by guiding his Subaru Impreza to the third position. Subaru models led the

manufacturers table with six out of ten cars in the top-10. Mitsubishi had the remaining four slots.

‘’Third overall in the Safari Rally and second podium on the event in as many years is a real testimony to our team for keeping us going on one of the toughest safaris in history. Thank you so much Robin Dimbleby, Geoff Jones, Colin Schreiber, family, and the entire QMR Team,’’ said Mitchell.

While the bigger name from the Tundo family (Carl) was basking in the sun after retiring from the event, his father Frank and sister Natasha Di Cangio were enjoying the unprecedented limelight following a fourth place in a Mitsubishi Lancer.

Natasha was the best placed-female navigator while Tuta Mionki was the next after guiding Steven Gacheru to the 13th overall place in a Subaru Impreza.

By finishing in the seventh place, Zambia’s Essa Mohamed becomes the highest placed ARC contender and thus, scores maximum points towards the African Rally Championship contest.

Zambia’s Jessy Singh was unfortunate after his car stopped in the final stages of the event, while lying in the third place. He was on the verge of taking over the lead of the overall standings of the African Rally Championship

Jessy’s is dream is emulate his father’s (Muna Singh) footsteps by taking the ARC title back to the for the third time. His dad was crowned ARC champion in 2004 and ‘05, while Jassy’s navigator, David Sihoka is headed for his fourth title.

Among the big names to bow out included Carl Tundo, the four times winner of the Safari Rally and one of the pre-favourites for

outright victory in the 2013 event, was forced out of the rally after his Mitsubishi stopped with engine failure on the final day.

Former Safari Rally winner, Ian Duncan also said bye to the rally after his Mitsubishi Lancer suffered transmission failure on Day One. ‘’The car just stopped with either drive shaft or gear box problem. It is sad.’’ said Duncan while on the phone.

Alex Horsey (Evo X) retired after the fuel pump blew. They pushed the car into service but could not change it in time and were eventually time barred. Also to bow was Raaji Bharij.

Meanwhile, Dennis Mwenda and Edward Njoroge boosted their F2 title ambition by winning the Two-wheel-drive category at the wheels of a Toyota Corolla.

Thanks to KCB for helping the sport grow to one of the most respected

motor sport events in the African Continent. Chairman of the Kenya Rally Drivers Association, Carl Tundo said KRDA will continue to work with KCB and the rest of the players in the sport to make sure the image of the game remains at the top. ‘’The recent turn of events will not deter us from maintaining the standard of the sports, which is well respected across the nation and beyond. KCB

has contributed immensely towards the development of the KNRC series.’’said the multiple Kenya National Rally Champion. He said KRDA and KMSF will work hand in hand to take the sport to the other level. Former Safari Rally Champion and also former KRDA Chairman, Ian Duncan also shared Tundo’s sentiments by acknowledging the positive growth of the sport with the help of the sponsors. ALS is one of the leading sponsors of the KNRC series where they provide a helicopter at every and each round of the KCB-sponsored series.

The helicopter forms part of the larger medical team where it is available for emergency evacuations in case of accidents involving the competition across the nation.

Like ALS, D.T. Dobie is also part of the sponsors of the widely known Kenya National Rally Championship circus. It provides a 4x4 vehicle which is used as a ZERO Car in the rallies. Its job is to ‘Clean’ the road ahead for the following rally cars and its drivers.

The DT-Dobie-sponsored vehicle leaves about 30 minutes of the first rally car on road.

WRC status

By ABDUL SIDIMore needs to be done if Kenya has to reclaim the World Rally Championship status. Surinder Thatthi, the head of the FIA in Africa, said this at a recent interview.‘’Beside having big chunk of sponsor money, Kenya has to make sure the Safari Rally is properly organized and its stages are on completely closed circuits,’’ said Thatthi.Despite all the glamour and image of the Safari Rally, Kenya was placed third in the ratings of the 2012 African Rally Championship, which saw Zimbabwe at the top followed by South Africa in the second place. Despite the poor rating, Kenya, with its unique features, is still regarded as one of the top African countries that could change the real face of the WRC with equal representation from across the globe.According to Thatthi, Kenya would need to identify areas which can are able to host an event of the WRC status. Organizers would then have to make sure the stages of up to 130km are properly graded, and safety is guaranteed with allocation of marshals at every 300 metres along the route.‘’Once able to fulfil the FIA requirements, the next big target would be the budget to kick of the project. Initially, Kenya would need $0.5m to help acquire FIA permit, timing and tracking devices, pay for promoter fees and other documents. A further $2m would be required to help grade the roads and cost of other organizational duties.’’ added Thatthi.Thatthi said that safety and security is also considered one of the major requirements of the FIA, if the chances of getting the world rally championship status have to be revived. Some of the issues that could have dented Kenya’s chance of reclaiming the WCR status, could be pointed at the series of accidents in the 2013 Safari Rally. Once regarded as the toughest round of the WRC, Kenya lost is slot in 2002.
