“Carol” by Patricia Highsmith

Therese was brought up in an institution and felt lost when trying to make a living in the real world. Her contact with Richard, though pleasant, seemed unsatisfactory. On the one hand he was romantically attracted to her, but Therese sensed a feeling of being inferior and that she was only an appendage to his way of living. One day, while working in the toy shop, a smartly dressed lady hesitated at her counter and Therese felt a sharp spark of interest. By a series of semi intentional events, they were drawn together. Richard had his suspicions, suggesting that Therese was young and naïve and being drawn into a relationship she did not understand. Carol, experienced in these things, took her on a trip away from home, leaving her adored daughter with a not very understanding husband. Therese learned what it was like to live in a lesbian relationship, but then Carol had to return home. Leaving the car for Therese to continue, Carol flew back home while Therese had time to reflect on the situation and to realise that Carol had been in another relationship with Abigail, who was now a good friend. On returning home, Therese found out that Carol’s husband had filed for custody of her daughter. Confused that there was an emotional price to pay for being different, Carol admitted to Therese that part of the reason for their trip, was to warn her of the pitfalls of a lesbian relationship. However, the choice was not all negative and sometimes relationships can change to firm friendships.

This story has also been made into a film, starring Cate Blanchett. I learned of this part way through and the image of Cate came to my mind as I continued through the story, she seemed so perfect for the part.

Three stories of three situations of women going through hard times. Did I enjoy the books? Well, I am a bit of a Mrs. Fixit.. The situations presented seemed to be insoluble, yet the true story did have a happy ending, though the cost was high. I spent quite a lot of time pondering over similar real life dilemmas. It would be good to think there was an answer to all life’s problems, but most of us have to just soldier on, choosing as many best options as we can. The afterword was interesting. Presented for publication in 1951, the book was rejected by her regular publisher. In 1952, when showed it to another publisher under a different title. The response was overwhelming. Patricia Highsmith had a huge response, particularly from young people, thanking her for putting a more positive light on gay relationships. Joyce Young

Lions Club

Lions Citizen of the Year The Lions Club is calling for nominations for our Citizen of the Year 2016. Surely all the sporting clubs out there have tireless volunteers in the background, who do so much for the club. Closing date for nominations is Wednesday, 15th June. Nomination forms can be collected from the

Newsagency.

Lions Market Please come along to the Market on 14th May - we have great stalls, but sometimes out of town stall holders only come once and don’t come back, due to lack of support. We are open to anything - car

boot sale out the front or a garage sale at the front.

Lions Christmas Cakes are still available at the Newsagency or Victoria Hotel.

The Lions BBQ Van has been very busy in town and out of town, which is great. Our next venture is to raise enough funds to install a fridge in

the van., but it is very expensive.

Batteries & Specs - Don’t forget to save your

old spectacles and batteries for the Lions Club. If you need batteries to be picked up, just give Bill

Seniors News A wonderful, but very wet day was had last Friday on our Wetlander Cruise. All the yummy scones (cooked on board) - you

wanted to eat. Nice entertainment and very informative commentary by the driver/pilot

(the fellow at the wheel!). Very pretty scenery. Then off to Barham for lunch - a

very busy bakery, so some went to the Club. Thank you to the “kids” on the bus for putting seat belts on without being told, and behaving.

Next trip being planned - possibly to the Catalina Museum in Lake Boga and some-

where else in the area. Movie Day Monday was the ‘Marigold Hotel’,

funny, but sad in parts. Nice nibbles and afternoon tea (thanks Bernie).

Don’t forget Blumes Fashions - Monday, 23rd, Cards, Bingo and DVD days, also on

the Agenda. Next luncheon will be Thursday, 12th May

** note change** due to unforeseen circumstances. Luncheon - $10 (2 courses) Cards - 500 - Kate & Peg won 5 games, Trevor & Jeanette 2. If you don’t get the

cards, you don’t win. Happy birthday to anyone having one.

You don’t have to be a Senior to join us at Cards, Movies, Bingo days, just come along

Bowls

Invitation Day Bowls Tournament

The ladies took centre stage on the greens as they enjoyed the Invitation Day competition on Tuesday of this week. It was a great way to kick off the merry month of May. With fourteen teams playing it was just delightful to see so many happy women playing, laughing and joking. Teams entered from far and wide and included players from Moama, Lockington, Boort and Inglewood, as well as most clubs from our Northern District Association. Eventual winners on the day were as follows: Overall Winners were a Cohuna Golf/Boort composite team (Katie Peace, Marj Mooney, Jo Maxted, and Lynette Cameron). Well done ladies, a sterling effort! Runners Up from Inglewood (Brenda Jones, Margo Leitch, Bev Taig and Shirley Sloan. The winning teams both received generous awards from our major sponsors, Loddon Shire and Hair To Chat. The raffle donated by Bettina’s Professional Care and Pyramid Hill Pharmacy Depot were supplemented with donations from Club members. Winners of the raffles were L. Appleby, N. and L. Whiteacre, M. Malone, J Grills, L. Rowdy, V. Morris and L. Adams.

Lucky Lead was won by P. Crithton,

Lucky Second won by D. Hill, Lucky

Third won by R. Bibby and Lucky Skip

won by N. Whiteacre.

Beautiful Chrysanthemum pots were

given to lucky spot winners on each

table and went to G. Teasdale, E.

Whelan, J. Marshall, S. McGillivray, J.

Grills, R. Bibby and M.Malone. Before

the match game commenced, players

rolled to the kitty and coin strategically

placed on the greens and winners were

P. Lyndon and N. Whiteacre. So there

was an ample supply of treasures for

players to take home with a grin of

satisfaction on their faces.

The Pyramid Hill Club ladies served up a fabulous luncheon, quiche with salad for lunch, topped off with a sponge. This was followed by sandwiches and the most delectable array of desserts you can imagine for afternoon tea. The dessert course was the brain-child of Kate whose cooking kills would leave MKR contestants for dead, and had players gasping with pleasure as they came in from their games. A huge thanks to the catering Committee and all who helped with the preparation and serving of food for the day. The compliments were flowing. Thanks must go to our sponsors, Loddon Shire and Hair To Chat, and also to the green keepers for the preparation of the greens. Lastly, a big ‘thank you’ to our Tournament Secretary, Jan Leed, for her untiring work in rounding up teams to play, and ensuring that the day went off smoothly. It was a good deal of work but with a very satisfying outcome – we can all feel proud that our small club can present such an impressive event. The thought for the day: smiling exercises more muscles than doing push ups. If you do something give it 100% except if you are giving blood. Notice to all members: don’t forget the

Presentation Night next

Friday, 13th May.

The Pre-school Committee are treating us to a divine meal. Cost for the night is $25 per person. It’s a 6:30 for 7:00 sit down.

The Seafood Tournament sponsored by

Dave and Deb Domain has been

scheduled for 22nd May – put this date in

your diary for another good day out.
