But v;ith the drives against pinball in certain states - this division lost its national unity. Neither are any other coin machines, with the exception of merchandise vendors, so nationally identified as a network. The automatic phono is the one machine which has won national acclaim and recog- nition, This netTvork of about 400,000 machines in all the 48 states and in practically every hamlet in the country is today one of the most irapor- tant musical stimulators in American history. It has created stars. It has also proven itself of more national irportance during the first bond drives. It is a pa- triotic morale builder. It is everything that the phono operator ever hoped it v/ould become. By not being a single guided unit it is a loose muscled giant, which if prop- erly trained and controlled v/ith the right sort of men at the head woTild prove one of the most powerful influences in American music. The music field is extremely impor- tant for it opens a great inanj/ possibilities to the trade in the post-war era. The locations it dominates are all-in^ortant. Warren A.
