Do you ever notice the advertising terms used to describeChristmas gifts today? Like the LEGO movie song, Every-thing is AWESOME, products are advertised as if they areextraordinary when the reality is that they are just OK. Ad-
vertisements for a certain cologne or perfume promise to change your life into this great adventure.Not likely. Few things live up to the hype, especially this time of year.
But in the passage above Isaiah predicts the coming of One whose name shall be called Wonderful.The Hebrew word Isaiah uses is a superlative word meaning marvelous, miraculous, or wondrous.The idea is that it is so separated from the normal and ordinary that it excites amazement and won-der. We would say that it is enough to “blow you away!”
Isaiah’s prediction of a child born was not alluding to the wonder of childbirth. Neither does thewonder of the birth of Christ have anything to do with the trite sentimentalism around this time ofyear about a sweet little baby in a manger! It has to do with the divine rescue mission of the “ever-lasting Father” in the person of the Son, Jesus Christ, who “came into the world to save sinners”!(I Timothy 1:15) Now that is awesome!
