From the Desk of Father José…..
Today in our Gospel we are given the marvelous parable of the prodigal son. Jesus instructs those who were judging Him because He was being inclusive and accepting of those people who “did not fit” and was demonstrating that those same people belonged. He even ate with them and celebrated with them. For many of us, this Gospel reminds us of different times in our lives where we feel accepted, or even at times where we feel jealous because others are being accepted. It also perhaps reminds us of the patience of the father simply waiting for his son to come home. All through the Gospel, the theme of acceptance and welcoming love from God is told to us. I pray this same acceptance continues to permeate here in our St. Charles parish community. But this community is not just for us who think and feel like we “fit” in the community but especially for the many who are coming and calling us their home; many do not participate in our ministries
or even the social gatherings that we have. And yet, they are hungry for the Lord too! This is why for the past couple of months I have been asking for ideas how to make us more of an inclusive parish where all feel welcome. The past couple of Sundays, since the weather has been getting so much nicer, I have noticed so many of the parents who gather outside of the Church while their small children are playing. I have been talking to them and asking them as young families how we can be more welcoming, just at the Lord reminds us in the Gospel. The number one answer I have received is by doing what you are doing Father! Simply talking to us and not judging us because our children are being loud in Church. This has hit home at so many levels. May we take some time to welcome those who are here and simply pray that we may become even more welcoming. As you are coming to Church in the next couple of weeks you will notice that we are creating a new gathering space in between the Church and the Rectory. It will be called “St. Charles Piazza.” From the beginning when I arrived here as your pastor, I was asked by many of you as parishioners what do I need or wish? I took some time, and started saying out loud soon after I arrived that we needed a place to gather and be more visible to our parishioners as they leave Church on Sundays. The Friendship Sunday is wonderful and very inviting, too, but a bit far for some of our parishioners who just leave for so many reasons. I pray that with our wonderful weather, wonderful background of the Church, and wonderful openness of our parishioners, this new dedicated place to gather may be not just a Piazza where we eat and leave but where were share and care for one another. I have secured enough funds to start this project. It will come to full life in the next couple of weeks. Thank you to so many who have believed in the mission of simply gathering and being welcoming. May the prodigal Son remind us each to feel the need to come to the table, and may the love of the Father simply remind us to be patient with ourselves and others as they approach the table of the Lord. Gratefully, Fr.

REPORTING ABUSE/MISCONDUCT It is important to communicate your concerns if you observe anyone interacting with a child
in an inappropriate manner. Parents, family members, teachers, clergy and all who work with or are responsible for the care of children need to remember that speaking up is one of the most important
things they can do to protect not just their own children, but all children. Voicing your concerns is critical to protecting God’s children. Any incident of abuse or misconduct should be immediately
reported. For a copy of the complete VIRTUS® article, “Are We Communicating our Concerns?,” please visit http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.
Are We Communicating our Concerns?” (¿Estamos comunicando nuestras preocupaciones?), visita http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.

Bible Study with Monsignor Peter Nugent A new Bible Study series for parishioners on the Gospel of St. Luke is now available, which will be read on the
Sundays of this new liturgical year, beginning today. The study essays are written by Msgr. Peter Nugent, and are to be found on the St. Charles parish website. Search more deeply into this beautiful telling of the coming of Christ among
us, his saving message and works. There will be periodic additions to this study material over the next few months.

Do you fast? Give me proof of it by your works. If you see a poor man, take pity on him. If you see a friend being honored, do not envy him. Do not let only your mouth fast, but also the eye, and the ear, and the feet, and the hands, and all the members of our bodies. St. John Chrysostom
Donations We Especially Need Men’s work pants and jeans all sizes
Canned meat such as tuna Peanut butter
Tab top cans of food that can be meals, and individually wrapped servings of protein bars, nuts, or other healthy items Sturdy walking shoes
Blankets and sheet sets, marked by size Toothpaste, especially small and medium-sized tubes, and toothbrushes, soap, shampoo
Some Things You Can Buy to Donate We often need medium and smaller tubes of toothpaste for our single clients. We save the large ones for
families. Look on the big online retail sites for cases of small or medium sized toothpaste tubes. Consider buying men’s jeans or work pants at the big inexpensive stores or at thrift stores.
We are always in short supply, so this is an ongoing need. Bags of new socks and white T-shirts from the big inexpensive stores will be especially helpful for our hot shower ministry.
Please Consider a Regular Gift You may see that we ask for some of the same “especially needed” donations almost every week. It’s not
because we don’t want to write a new list. It’s because we are often, and in some cases always, in short supply and unable to provide those items. It would be a wonderful form of giving to pick an item from that list, and
make a practice of donating some of that same item periodically, perhaps monthly. Men’s pants, toothpaste, peanut butter, and canned meat are great ideas. In the summer when it gets hot, a case of water monthly is a great idea.
Volunteering at the Service Center Please think about joining our team of volunteers if you are looking for an opportunity to help with our parish ministries. Volunteers are expected to serve one morning a week (or more if you like). You can stop by during our operating hours to
fill out an application and to get an idea for how we work and how you can help. You’ll need your photo ID to apply.
Please ring the bell at the west side door of the Service Center for donation drop off during our regular operating hours of Tues, Wed, Thurs, Sat, & Sun 9 - 11:45 am.
