“Behold, the Lamb of God”
2
January 14, 2018 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Mass Intentions
My Dear Family of Faith,
This week’s bulletin letter in-
cludes two separate topics:
Jesus—Lamb of God
In today's Gospel of John, we
hear John the Baptist introduce Jesus as
the Lamb of God. The image on the cover
of this week's bulletin symbolizes Jesus,
the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei in Latin),
who is bearing the flag of victory. This
symbol has its roots in the traditions of the
Old Testament. For centuries people wor-
shiped God by sacrificing animals
(typically a lamb), then offering them to
God in the temple. The Jewish Feast of
Passover celebrates the Exodus of God's
people out of slavery in Egypt and to-
wards the Promised Land. In order to save
their firstborn child, the Israel-
ites used the blood of a slain
lamb to mark their door posts,
whereby the angel of death
would pass over their homes
and spare their children. The
Israelites ate the lamb in a
meal before they left. The
lamb was to have no blemish,
and none of its bones were to
be broken.
Jesus is called the
Lamb of God because He is the perfect
sacrifice offered to God. Throughout the
scriptures we see references to Jesus that
compare him to a lamb - a "spotless, un-
blemished lamb" in 1 Peter, and “ like a
lamb led to the slaughter" in Isaiah. In the
Book of Revelation, Jesus is referred to
several times as the Lamb of God - " Wor-
thy is the Lamb who was slain, To receive
power and riches and wisdom, And
strength and honor and glory and bless-
ing!" (Rev. 5:11). After Jesus' crucifixion,
the soldiers did not break his legs to kill
Him because He was already dead. Like
the Passover lamb, his bones were unbro-
ken.
In his first letter to the Corinthi-
ans, Paul states, "Our paschal lamb,
Christ, has been sacrificed." Jesus' death
on the cross was a pass-over from death to
life for himself and for all of us. By his
blood we are saved from death. He gave
us the hope of reaching our promised
land, heaven.
Planning Study
As you know, we are conducting
a comprehensive survey of the entire par-
ish. The purpose of the survey is to help
gauge support for the following potential
projects that constitute our parish master
plan:
A fellowship hall and gathering space
Replenishing our maintenance fund
I would like to thank
everyone who has already
participated in the study.
Your thoughts are extremely
valuable to us during this
planning process. I encourage
everyone who has not re-
sponded to do so. Your input
will help us make an in-
formed decision regarding our
long-range plans for Immacu-
late Heart of Mary.
We hope to have all surveys com-
pleted by January 21. You may return
your survey to the office or place it in the
offertory basket at any of the Masses.
You may also complete the sur-
vey online by going to
steiergroup.com/survey, clicking on

Stewardship Reflection for January 14, 2018 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
"Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to
them, ‘What are you looking for?’” - JOHN 1:38
What are you looking for? Are you wasting your time
looking for the material comforts of the world? Or, is
your heart longing for something deeper that can only be
found by spending time with God? Take time, each day,
in silence and ask the Lord what it is that He wants from
your stewardship.
Join our Parish Festival Team! Memorial Day is less than 5 months away, and we have a
lot of preparing to do before our 2018 Backyard Bash
parish festival. We have a wonderful committee of vol-
unteers who do an amazing job planning all the details.
Some of them have been on the committee for many
years and would love it if some new faces would step up
to help! We really could use new co-chairs for our Food
Team, Raffle, and Children’s Games. The Festival Com-
mittee is meeting this week Tuesday, January 16 at 6 p.m.
in the Church Meeting
Room. Come and see
how you can help...
(And you’ll have fun,
too)!

9 Days for Life
The U.S. bishops an-
nual novena 9 Days
for Life takes place
Thursday, January 18
– Friday, January 26.
Pray for the respect
and protection of all
human life with new
intentions, brief reflec-
tions. Download the novena online, or participate through
Facebook, email, text message or an app. Join at
www.9daysforlife.com! Each January 22 our nation
marks the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme
Court case which legalized abortion during all nine
months of pregnancy. Since that tragic decision, more
than 56 million children's lives have been lost to abortion,
and many suffer that loss—often in silence. As Catholics,
we recognize the inherent dignity of every person in every
circumstance and at every stage of life—from conception
to death. Yet we continue to see many threats to life and
violence against it. We cannot look the other way.
SVdP Recycle the Warmth Blanket Drive
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be conducting the
Madison area’s annual Recycle the Warmth Blanket
Drive and our church will be taking part. The annual drive
allows St. Vincent de Paul to provide free blankets, sheets
and other bedding throughout the year to people in need
in Dane County. Your help is needed to recycle the
warmth and make this assistance possible. Committed to
helping our neighbors in need, St. Vincent de Paul offers
aid without regard to the religion, race or ethnic back-
ground.
Please bring your new or gently used blankets, bedding
and pillows to the collection bin at church the weekend of
January 27/28. Donation envelopes (your donation of $10
or more will make a blanket purchase possible) will also
be available on the weekend of the drive. Shopko is also
offering a special price on select good-quality blankets
between Jan. 26 and Jan. 28 and donation bins will be
available in each store. Thanks in advance for helping
your neighbors in need through this year’s Recycle the
Warmth Blanket Drive. Visit http://svdpmadison.org/
