I meant to send this yesterday but there's still time. All this week on the Food Network they are replay-ing Alton Brown's "Feasting on Asphalt 1" at 8:00pm as a prelude to "Feasting on Asphalt 2" which starts next week. It is our kind of show, a group of guys riding cross-country on BMW's searching for Mom&Pop local food. What more is there?

I believe the new Feasting on Asphalt 2 starts on Aug 4, Sat, at 9 pm ?.Should be interesting, as this new one takes him up beside the Mississippi River.//Jim Smith

BMW will acquire the renowned motorcycle company Husqvarna Motorcycles. Dr. Herbert Diess, General Director of BMW Motorrad, and the Italian industrialist Clau-dio Castiglioni signed a contract on 19.07.2007 in Italy. The contractual agreement will come into full effect upon final approval of the EU cartel authorities. Both parties agreed that the purchase price was to remain confidential.

For BMW Motorrad the acquisition of Husqvarna Motorcycles is a logical step in en-hancing the company's activities in the field of light, sporty motorcycles, which has recently been reinforced with the new models of the BMW G 650 X series. Comment-ing on BMW's decision to acquire Husqvarna Motorcycles, Diess, General Director of BMW Motorrad, stated: "With the Husqvana models targeted at the sporty competi-tion, we will be able to extend the BMW Motorrad range to include younger groups of customers as well as the entire off-road and supermoto sector much more quickly and effectively than with our core brand alone. This transaction also provides us with di-rect access to a worldwide sales network in the off-road segment."

BMW Motorrad plans to continue operating Husqvarna Motorcycles as a separate en-terprise. All development, sales and production activities, as well as the current work-force, will remain in place at its present location in the region of Varese in northern Italy.

Just as BMW Motorrad, Husqvarna Motorcycles is steeped in tradition and one of the most renowned motorcycle companies in the world. Motorcycles were initially pro-duced in Sweden from 1903 and in Italy from 1986. Today the company is one of the leading suppliers of sporty off-road motorcycles. In the course of its history, Husqvarna Motorcycles has achieved numerous international racing victories includ-ing European and World Championship titles.

BMW Motorrad produced and sold over 100,000 motorcycles for the first time (production: 103,759 units, delivery 100,064 units) in 2006. The production program includes only large-volume motorcycles over 500 cc. BMW Motorrad is the largest European manufacturer in this segment. In 2006, BMW Motorrad achieved sales of 1,265 million euros, with pre-tax profits of 66 million euros. BMW Motorrad em-ployed an average of 2,816 staff worldwide in 2006.

Husqvarna Motorcycles is part of the Italian company MV Agusta S.p.A. and pro-duced some 12,000 motorcycles in the capacity range of 125 to 610 cc in 2006. The focus of the company's model program is on sporty off-road motorcycles which are equipped solely with single cylinder engines. Husqvarna Motorcycles employed a workforce of approximately 240 in Italy in 2006.

The airhead is an ideal to the mechanically inclined. Let me explain my own case:

About 5 years ago, I started thinking of "restoring a classic motorcycle". My first thoughts were very much about build-ing a Triton, the Norton Featherbead frame with a pre-unit Bonnie engine.

Bad idea.

Some research quickly revealed that such a project was bound to be far beyond my financial means. Further reflection made me recall the experience of a Triton project I was involved in, mainly as the gopher to some very clever young apprentice fitters and turners, late sixties.

It was incredibly difficult to build that Triton, only made possible through the resources of those young mens' employer, Iscor. (South African Iron and STEAL Corporation.) The required number of spacers, distance pieces, shims etc. would come as a surprise to many.

Through research, I also came to appreciate the difference between "restoration" and "rebuild".

The thought of redundant BSW and BSF screw threads in these modern times was the last nail in the coffin of the Triton idea.

Then my thoughts turned to BMW airheads. I've built up a bit of experience with a few of them over the years, (not mine except for one very bad R50/2, briefly) and I have always had a sort of respect for them.

Here was the mature tinkerer's dream, much commonality of parts, reasonable availability, metric fasteners, simple enough to be achievable, complex enough to be satisfying. Maybe just economically viable in my case, though I wish I had the money to do a good slash 2. But the older they are, the more money you need.

Today's rocketeers would have a real good laugh at a Triton. Just maybe, they would have a bit of respect for a dignified oldish airhead, maybe even for its rider who have grown up enough to realize that his "caff" days are long gone.

That's why the air-head for me.
