LETTERS FROM A PASTOR TO HIS PEOPLE · SEPTEMBER 4, 2016

Dear Parishioners, Did you know that people today on average get 20% less sleep than people one hundred years ago? It's not because of the evolution of our bodies. We need just as much sleep as our great-grandparents did. We don't get enough sleep because we're more occupied. More significantly, we don't get enough sleep because we - our age, that is - don't have a firm enough commitment to our priorities. Sleep is about prioritizing, and our Lord speaks of priorities in our Gospel this Labor Day weekend: "Which of you wish-ing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion?" (Lk 14:25-33) When I choose to go to bed before 10:00pm, there are many activities I'm sacrificing. I might forgo reading an extra chapter in my book, answering an email, watching the last few innings of a Cubs game, even calling my siblings. But sleep is a high priority to me. It affects mood, concentration, prayer life, etc. So I have to be disciplined in sticking to my priori-ties and turn off the lights. I'm not writing this because I want to be your life coach; not writing this to give a plug for sleep. (And I'm actually preaching to myself on this one, since I don't get enough sleep.) I'm writing this, again, because it hits on the need for priority and order in our life. When Jesus says, "If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, even his own life, he cannot be my disciple," he is making it very clear what our priorities should be. God comes first, then family and friends, then job, then acquaintances, and so on. Just like we ought to turn off the iPhone and go to bed, sometimes we need to say no, even to the ones we love, and spend time with God. It entails sacri-fice - "whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple" - but we'll be better for it.

Well, my loyalty to the parish here is already being put to the test. On Friday the Saint Juliana football team opens against my alma mater, Sts. Faith Hope & Charity in Winnetka, where I myself played football not too long ago. Go Trojans. Con-grats also to the Notre Dame Dons varsity football team for their opening game victory last week. I had the pleasure to celebrate Mass for the ND football program last Sunday and again today. I'm no longer the new (or newest) kid on the block! We welcome Stephen Lilly from Mundelein Seminary. Stephen is a seminarian (preparing to be a priest), having completed two years of theology/formation. He is on a pastoral year and will be living here at Saint Juliana Parish, observing what priesthood is like, discerning his own call to be a priest, and helping where he can. The seminary asked me if we could host him, and I was more than willing. Of course it will be fun for me personally, but I also feel this is a great place for a young man to get a feel for how awesome the priesthood is. I love being a priest - celebrating the Sacraments, being with people, going through the school and teaching, etc. - and I hope and pray Stephen, after his year here at Saint Juliana Parish, will get a taste of that love. We have a great parish, and Father Laurent and Father Roger make the rectory a fun place to live, so I'm excited for Steven. Please keep him in your prayers and welcome him. I hope you have a great Labor Day weekend; that you can spend some time with God and your family...and get some sleep! Yours in Christ, Father James

Will You Join Us?.. Every morning Monday through Friday at 6:00am in the chapel and 8:00am in church on Saturdays we pray the rosary. We pray for the needs of the Church, the Pope, clergy and reli-gious, for sinners everywhere, for all suffering souls, as well as those in Purgatory. We are parishioners responding to the needs of others as well as our own.

THE TASSEL OF THE CLOAK James F. Wallace Charles Péguy (1873-1914) was a French poet and philosopher. Born to extreme poverty in Orléans, the home town of St. Joan of Arc, Péguy was a prominent na-

onalist and socialist. Mussolini cited his wri ngs. He had a conversion, howev-er, became Catholic, and experienced a tremendous devo on to the Blessed Mother. His poem Prayer of Confidence, about the Virgin of Chartres Cathedral, inspired a newfound apprecia on of the beau ful gothic church sixty miles out-side Paris, as well as to Mary. Péguy o en walked in pilgrimage between the two famous churches: Notre Dame of Paris and Notre Dame of Chartres. In fact, this walking the French countryside would serve him well. He never abandoned his loyalty to France and became a lieutenant in the French Army when World War I started. Though the marches were no longer pilgrimages, Péguy s ll encountered Mary in the French countryside. The French and Belgian terrain is filled with "wayside shrines": statues or monuments depic ng Jesus and Mary. Most of these shrines are representa ons of the crucifixion with Mary at the foot of the cross or of the Pietà: Mary receiving her dead son's body from the cross. These shrines - many mu lated by bullets and shrapnel - were a source of tremendous consola on to the soldiers, as several a ested. They would sing the Stabat Mater as they marched by giving them the assurance Mary was close to them in their terror. She could empathize with their pain. Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of Good Comfort thus became two key figures of WWI. Mary was a grace to the soldiers, many of whom died, including Charles Péguy, who was killed heroically in the Ba le of the Marne on September 5, 1914.
