Dr. Jerry Sue Thornton is President Emeritus of Cuyahoga Community College, the largest and oldest community college in Ohio. During her tenure, the Collegebecame a leader in educational innovation, workforce training and economicdevelopment. Recognized as “one of the 50 most influential people in NortheastOhio” she is presently CEO of DreamCatcher Educational Consulting Servicewhere she coaches and provides professional development for new college anduniversity presidents.
Dr. Thornton began her higher education career at Triton College (Illinois) as anEnglish faculty with 14 years of progressive leadership at the college. In 1985 she became President of Lakewood Community College (now Century College) inMinnesota and continued in that role until she was named President of CuyahogaCommunity College (1992) until her retirement in June 2013. Among her manyleadership activities include working internationally to help develop the communitycollege concept in the Netherlands, China, United Kingdom, Jordan, and Qatar. In the spring of 2011, Dr. Thornton was appointed co-chair of the 21st Century
Commission on the Future of Community Colleges, a national task force convened by the American Associationof Community Colleges.
A native Kentuckian, she earned bachelors and master’s degrees from Murray State University (Kentucky) and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. She is also a graduate of Harvard’s Institute for theManagement of Lifelong Education with honorary doctorates from Murray State University (Kentucky), the College of St. Catherine (Minnesota), Youngstown State University, Cleveland State University, The University of Toledo, Baldwin Wallace College and Cuyahoga Community College.
Dr. Thornton is an internationally acclaimed speaker, addressing the leadership of community colleges acrossthe globe on a variety of topics including: high performance leadership; leading from the middle; closing theeducational gap for minorities; infusing creativity and innovation in leadership; new leadership directions whennavigating murky waters; and others. She is also engaged in the coaching of new first-time community collegeand medium-sized university presidents.
