46 Flexo & Gravure Global 4-2016 Markets and events Let’s talk a little about Industry 4.0. Where does Uteco stand? Peretti: Well, let me start by say- ing Industry that 4.0 is a very well- known, and an important issue everywhere not only in Europe, but also worldwide. However, I do not think that the technical aspects are so well-known by all the people discussing this issue. We have al- ready been working for many years on some attributes of Industry 4.0. The first has been everything which is connected to the product which is the press in terms of global inte- gration for the exchange of infor- mation. In the first instance we have the installation at our cus- tomer and how we can integrate our electronic mechanical systems with logistics, global management of the press and the production line, and so on. I think that, like our competitors, we have been working on these aspects for a long time, in terms of obtaining direct feedback from the operators, and from the management system used by the customer including logistics. This system has been used in our work, for many years. Another important aspect of in- dustry 4.0 is the organization of our company. I came from the au- tomotive industry so I‘ve already introduced a lot of innovative management philosophies in terms of just-in-time, and quality - Six Sigma for example. You can there- fore say, that I am a six sigma belt coming to the company with auto- motive experience. What does that mean for a printing press manufacturer? Peretti: I have introduced these philosophies more and more strongly into the company with Six Sigma philosophy. But this kind of system must be organized in a completely integrated way. We’ve got to work with all the other sup- ply chains and logistic systems, lean engineering, manufacturing, and the organization of our facto- ries. This is due to the fact that now we need to introduce this system into our three factories in Italy and the USA and also in our partner supplier plants in Italy and abroad. This means we must also have a management system in terms of in- formation. We were the first to in- troduce, for example, SAP, which is an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. It is not so easy to in- troduce SAP for our kind of busi- ness and our kind of products, as the concept is more useful for mass Ansgar Wessendorf In September 2016, the Italian flexo and gravure printing press manufac- turer Uteco organised the “Flexo So Good” event with suppliers and print- ers at its headquarters in Colognola ai Colli (VR). Peretti: We exhibited this new machine at drupa, and now we are showing it with some advanced concepts together with the partner suppliers. However, we must also increase the cooperation with our partner suppliers for consumables like inks and chemicals, from spa-tial mechanical groups, from tech-nology leaders and so on. This has a global dimension, not only for Uteco, but also for all these part-ners for this kind of application evolution of the “traditional” tech-nology. In fact we are headed in the same way as digital has over the past few years.

produced fast moving consumer goods (FMCG).

However, we have been success-ful in introducing SAP into our or-ganization, and so now SAP Italy and Europe are using us as a refer-ence worldwide as the key custom-er and a success story. This is due to the fact that we have been able to introduce it in a very short time with very good results, for this kind of production which is lean manu-facturing. And now we are also trying to integrate this kind of global manufacturing organization with our key selected suppliers so that we have the complete supply chain which is more and more able to use this Industry 4.0 concept and philosophy.

Is there anything else you want us to know about this idea?

Peretti: I want to emphasize that I am president of Centrexpo, vice- president of the Acimga associa-tion, and part of Confindustria, the general confederation of Italian in-dustry. So our government and as-sociations are also continue push-ing to introduce the Industry 4.0 concept.

Can you give us some details about the new EB machine?

Peretti: In this innovation, we are presenting a very advanced technology for flexo printing.

Where we are really the most ad-vanced is in EB. Although electron-ic beam curing is planned by everyone, all of our competitors have failed whereas we have worked a lot with Sun Chemical to develop a special printing ink. We spent a lot of time with the presi-dent of this company in the USA to push them to optimize the chemis-try of the ink.

We‘re working on the press and we have some patents for this kind of application. In addition we have

sold the first machine with this new advanced EB technology to an im-portant Italian supplier of Kimberly Clark. We carried out weeks of pro-duction tests with them. These new applications that we present now are the evolution of EB, extending this application not only from skin contact to food contact, but also integrated with lamination. In this case, I really think that it‘s some-thing comparable with digital in terms of innovation and future op-portunities for the market.

Can you talk a little about coopera-tion?
