Report on National Conferenceon

“Future Trends in Mining-Tomorrow Mine-Safe Mine”held on 25th and 26th May 2018 at Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru

1.0 Two days National Conference on “Future Trends in Mining (TomorrowMine-Safe Mine) was held at J. N. Tata Auditorium, Indian Institute ofScience, Bengaluru on 25th and 26th May 2018 in association with MinesSafety Association Karnataka (MSAK). The event was held on the occasion ofGolden Jubilee Celebrations of MSAK, which came into existence in the year1968. The event was held under the aegis of Directorate General of MinesSafety and supported by Department of Mines & Geology, Government ofKarnataka.

2.0 The inaugural session was chaired by Shri Prasanta Kumar Sarkar,Director General of Mines Safety, as Chief Guest, Shri N. S. Prasanna Kumar,Director, Department of Mines & Geology, Government of Karnataka andShri N. K. Nanda, Director (Technical), M/s NMDC Ltd., as guest of honor.The event was presided over by Dr. Meda Venkataiah, ED, M/s MSPL &Chairman MSAK.

3.0 About 510 delegates all around mining industry covering Karnataka,Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu State participated in the conference. Theparticipants were invited from the mining industry covering the jurisdictionof South-Central Zone, Hyderabad and Southern Zone, Bengaluru.

During two days, following themes were deliberated in the conference:

a) Safety Standards in Mining: Present-Future

b) New trends in Exploration in Strategic & Rare Earth Minerals

c) Advance technology in Mining Exploration

d) Sustainable Mining & Development

e) Alternative systems of transportation: Downhill conveyors and railwaysidings

4.0 Following technical papers on occupational health and safety ofpersons working in mines were presented by DGMS officers in the firsttechnical session:

i) New amendments to improve safety standards by Shri S. S. Prasad,Director of Mines Safety, Bilaspur Region

ii) Accident Analysis in Opencast Mining by Shri Manish Murkute,Director of Mines Safety, Ballari Region

iii) Employment of Contractual workers and Issues by Shri B. P. Singh,Director of Mines Safety, Chennai Region

iv) Occupational Health Hazards by Dr. George John, AD(OH), Dhanbad

The conference was all round successful in conveying views in all technicalsessions for meaningful discussions and interactions. The recommendationsof the conference will be circulated in due course of time to all stake holdersincluding different Central/ State Government departments.

Retired DGMS officials and MSAK officials were felicitated in the inauguraland valedictory session.
