Garwood Metal Company Garwood Metal Company Proudly Providing 100% Made in America Products Family-owned and operated, Garwood Metal Company has been recognized as a leader in the sheet metal industry for over 40 years. Specializing as a manufacturer of com- ponent parts, the New Jersey-based company is equipped to handle any size job — from high production runs to small prototype work. Don Kalis founded the company with the goal to provide uncompromising quality and outstanding customer service. Don’s formula for success has served the company well in meeting the needs of customers in a wide variety of industries including; Lighting, Electronics, Point-of Purchase Displays and Vending, to name a few. Company President, C.P. Kalis, elaborates on Garwood’s ongoing success: “Customers demand short lead times, quality parts and good pricing. Normally you can’t get all three, but at Garwood you can. As a result, 80% of our customers have been with us for more than 20 years. We attribute much of our success to partnering with AMADA. Simply put, AMADA equipment shortens lead times and ensures the highest quality.” Garwood Metal provides a full range of sheet metal services, from laser cutting to fabri- cating and forming, polishing, plating and more. The bulk of the company’s loyal customer base is within the tri-state area and word-of-mouth continues to be a key source for new business. C.P. adds, “We like to stick to local business. Once people become aware of our capabilities, or they learn that they’ve been paying too much overseas, they become a long-term customer. We are a component company, not an OEM, and I don’t compete against my customers. In fact, we have an extensive tooling inventory that’s available to our customers at no charge. We also pride ourselves on being ‘handshake people’ — meaning we’re committed to creating and sustaining long- lasting relationships that work. Our partnership with AMADA reflects that. Garwood Metal was one of the first AMADA turret machine facilities on the East Coast. Since that time we’ve invested in a wide range of AMADA equipment including press brakes, turret punch presses, both CO 2 and fiber lasers, and automated material handling systems. We buy the best equipment available and we know how to use it.” In addition to ongoing investments in technology and equipment, the Kalis family is committed to continuous improvement. Today, the 3rd generation is actively involved in the daily operations at Garwood. Thirty-one- year-old Chad handles all of the scheduling, and 28-year-old Christopher is responsible for Customer Service. C.P. comments on how the younger generation brings new energy and unique skill sets to the organization: “In addition to sending a message to our customers about Garwood’s long-term commitment to their business, the third generation brings with them a higher level of education and a greater willingness to embrace new technology.” Vice President, Jamie Kalis echoes C.P.’s statement by adding, “Keeping up with the latest technologies in metalworking and offering outstanding customer service has kept Garwood Metal ahead of the competition for decades. Leveraging technology enables us to produce quality products efficiently and cost-effectively, while ensuring on-time delivery.” In addition to Kalis family members, Garwood’s 40 employees include an on-site engineering staff. Their expertise, combined with state-of-the-art software and full QC and inspection processes, ensure quality on every job. Everything necessary to complete the transformation of sheet metal to component parts is on-site at Garwood. Garwood’s latest investment in high-tech equipment comes in the form of an LCG 3015 AJ Fiber Laser Cutting System that’s equipped with an ASFH 3015G Automated Material Handling System. C.P. comments on that purchase: “We were searching for a solution that would allow us to handle high-mix, low-volume production as well as run unmanned over week- ends. AMADA invited us to their Solution Center in Schaumburg, IL and we didn’t come empty handed. parts and we put a variety of machines to the test. Originally, we had our eyes on the C1 AJ Punch/Fiber Laser Combination machine. How- ever, after running our own parts, we were able to quickly verify for ourselves that the LCG AJ is the perfect solution for our specific needs.”

The American-Made LCG 3015 AJ Fiber Laser With ASFH 3015G Automated Material Handling/Storage System

The LCG 3015 AJ Fiber Laser processes materials up to 4 times faster than Garwood’s

CO2 laser. To keep pace with the higher speed and higher production volume, Garwood chose to pair the fiber laser with the ASFH 3015G automated material handling/storage system. C.P. reflects on that decision: “AMADA pro-vides flexible automation systems — enabling us to customize a solution to best suit our unique needs. We chose to configure the 6-shelf tower with 3 shelves for loading and 3 for unloading. Each shelf has a 6,000 lb. capacity and this gives us the flexibility to store a variety of material types and thicknesses. Now, we can respond quicker for short runs and rush jobs, plus we can run unmanned over the weekend. We keep 50 tons of metal in stock every day and we have tremendous buying power. The secret to buying material smart is buying when you don’t need it. The tower automation system enables us to buy smarter and run smarter — that’s great for our bottom line.”

LCG 3015 AJ
