district at the Large Scale Service Project and Circle K International Convention in Denver, CO.  Our district is sending 5 delegates, Ali, Byron, Sherwin, Louis, and I.  We will be fighting hard to open up Circle K for more members.  To further this goal our district has proposed an amazing 8 amendments to the International Bylaws creating four new membership types: Alumni, Club Building, Community affiliate and Young Professional.  It is our hope that these amendments will help not only our district but all of Circle K.  We do this for members and to further our Service, Leadership and Fellowship Mission.  We ask for your support as we debate and discuss what should be done to improve our organization. 

I hope you're having an amazing summer and just want to let you know that I will be in Edmonton September 19 th – 21 st  to meet with Circle K members and do district training.  I look forward to meeting all of you at our district sponsored party that weekend.  You are the backbone of what we do and you all rock!  Have fun this summer, stay safe and party like a service rockstar! ­­ Ian Martens Governor

Message from Our Governor: First off I would like to announce the winners of the 2007­2008 district matching scholarships Andrew Locke and Monique Munro.  I would like to congratulate you both and thank all those that applied.  Monique and Andrew's dedication to Circle K are amazing and they are role models for what Circle K'ers should be.  Each will receive $500.  I would like to acknowledge the gracious funding we have received from the Kiwanis Foundation of Canada of these scholarships.  Without their dedication to Circle K we would not be able to function as we do. 

Well we have come to mid­summer and a time when most people relax and recharge for next years school year, but Circle Ker's are not like most people.  We have been busy over the summer so far with service projects, making a difference one project at a time.  One example of this is the University of Manitoba's book drive project where we have already picked up many boxes of textbooks to help African literacy.  This is an example of what is at the heart of a Circle Ker, Service 365 days a year

The 93 rd Annual Kiwanis International Convention was held in Orlando Florida this June – what better reason to go there?  (Okay, I realize that for many of you Disney World, Sea World, or Universal Studios would be enough… we took in some of that too!)  With over five thousand attendees and guests, the convention began with a parade – or at least the Opening Session did.  I first attended some sessions concerning Kiwanis Family Growth, but eventually made my way to the auditorium where thousands sat awaiting the usual parade of flags that signaled the beginning of convention.  But no, that wasn’t the whole story.  While the flag bearers were local Florida Key Club members, they were followed and accompanied by CKI members in costume.  Yes, you got that right: dozens of your favorite characters were in attendance!  Who wouldn’t want to see Beauty and the Beast, Jasmine and Aladdin, Sponge Bob Square Pants, Pirates, Cinderella or the famed Mickey and Minnie Mouse up close and personal? 

With a beginning like that, the rest of the convention could only get better! Many sessions on topics such as Women in Kiwanis, Young Professionals Kiwanis Clubs, Kiwanis Next, and running better service projects were held.  Of course there was business to be conducted, but Kiwanis’ own Dr. Paul interviewed CKI president Amanda Badali and Key Club president Grant Lin to great applause and Sesame Street’s Maria spoke of the great work and change that has been brought about for children over the past several years.  Boys and Girls Clubs of America was another focus, as were finances, growth and change.  In addition to all that, Kiwanis elected its new leaders and held a House of Delegates that would be considered brief by CKI standards!  More time for great food, fellowship and enjoying all that Florida could offer! 

CKI raised over US$1000 for the Six Cents initiative at the end of the closing session as Kiwanians strolled from the auditorium.  Once dressed as characters, and now using their own character to charm Kiwanians, their involvement was essential to the success of yet another busy but fun filled convention.  And of course you can’t forget our visits to Dinner Theatres, Universal Studios, Steakhouses, and Disney World as essential parts of our Kiwanis International Convention. __Ali Grotkowski

It is an endowed fund for Circle K International held within the Kiwanis International Foundation. Basically, it helps Circle K Clubs and Districts serve the world through grants for service opportunities. The fund is established through a portion of your Circle K Club International dues, through direct donations, through the donation of Carthage­Pullman Society Memberships, and through the donation of Sapphire Circle Honoraries. Tomorrow Fund grants can help you take action. The postmark deadline for receipt of the grant request is July 15, 2008. The notification of the Circle K International Board’s decisions will be mailed no later than September 15. [PLEASE APPLY!!] There were several grant recipients last year.

Service Initiative: The Service Initiative places emphasis on programs that benefit children ages six to  13.  This  year,  CKI  has  decided  to  incorporate  the  three  emphasis  areas. Please see the CKI Website for more information. CKI members can take part in projects that will help children.

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION

2008 The 53rd Annual Circle K International Convention will be hosted by  the Rocky Mountain  District.  Denver,  Colorado, will  serve  as  the  site  of  this  wonderful event from August 6­9, 2008. The theme of  the  upcoming  International Convention  is  “Reaching New Heights”. The  Adams  Mark  Hotel  will  host  CKI members  and  other  Kiwanis­Family members in attendance. To see what this hotel features, please visit its website (http://www.adamsmark.com/denver/). It is not too early to start fundraising for this event.

The Circle K International Board has been working hard this summer.  With International Convention (ICON) coming up soon, our term is coming to an end.  Don’t worry though; we are dedicated to getting as much done as possible before our time is up. 

If you haven’t turned in your donations for the Six Cents Initiative, don’t worry there is still time to have it count towards President Amanda’s “Raise the Dough and the Hair Will Go” campaign.  The form to send in with donations can be found at http://www.circlek.org/lit/download.a sp?id=644.  If you use a check, make sure that you put “CKI – Water” in the memo line. 

There has been a lot of talk about a new CKI Website and a lot of confusion going along with it.  Kiwanis International staff now tells us that it will be unveiled at ICON.  Before it was going to be worked on by an outside company, but now it is being designed by Kiwanis International Staff
