So we meet again! What a stretch in world history that we
are a part of! Hopefully the worst is in our rearview mirror.
Through it all we’ve made an attempt to stay connected and I
know many of you were part of what we put in motion. The most
important entity was the weekly availability of the Divine Liturgy
on YouTube. I personally want to thank Deacon Bill, Deacon
Robert, Nick Lizanich (cantor) and Shalimar Masters (camera)
for making the sacrifice each week for this to happen. Based on
the number of views and the comments I have received, the
tapings went far beyond our parishioners. We also were able to
make available what would’ve been the remainder of the Lenten Adult Ed series (still on
YouTube). The website was the place to stay informed. Likewise the e-mail blasts I sent out. I
hope you opened them all. Our Wednesday night “Fireside Chats” drew between twenty
and thirty callers each week. The conversations were often lively and insightful. We had the
church open from noon-6:00 daily. Many people took advantage of this with visits for prayer
and meditation. I was inspired to hear how many people made it a point to “check-in” with
other parishioners by phone or e-mail. I also appreciated how many people kept up with or
went over and above with their weekly offering (dropping off or mailing envelopes and with
electronic giving).
Now it’s time to move forward. I believe we have in place every option that would
make it conducive for returning to public worship. Thanks to Lenny George each service is
available in our parking lot on 104.3 FM. This is huge for those who are not yet comfortable
joining with the public in the church itself. Len has also setup a closed circuit video
transmission in the hall in the event we go beyond the proper distancing inside the church
with the number of people attending. (We will also have chairs available for the vestibule
and beneath the overhang outdoors.) Bishop Milan has solved the issue many had with the
reception of the Eucharist by directing that each person receives on their own spoon. We
have sanitizing procedures in place for after every service.
It’s great to have “people” back in church! As I stated in my most recent letter, the
Church is the people! In my most recent homily I also stressed let’s be faith driven and
Eucharist centered as we move forward and not fear based! May God be with us as we
transition back to open churches!

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
Many excellent topics for future Adult Ed programs were suggested at one of our Fireside Chats.
Watch for future recordings on YouTube.
Bishop Milan encourages those who are not feeling well to stay at home. He has extended the
dispensation for the obligatory nature of attending the Divine Liturgy.
The Bishop also has forbidden any socials after liturgies so our Sunday Coffee/Donut gathering will be
on hold until permission is granted.
Hand sanitizers are available in the vestibule.
We have decided to dispense from the use of greeters for the time being.
Families are able to sit together without observing social distancing.
Liturgies will still be recorded for YouTube (either subscribe or find it at stjoebyz.com) with availability
on Sunday afternoons.
Spoons for Communion will be purified and then sent thru the dishwasher. (Thanks to the donor of
the spoons.)
Regular hours for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the confessional are now back in place.
The status of mirovanije is up in the air as this bulletin goes to print.
Fifth All Souls Saturday
This week is the 5
th
and final All Souls Saturday. The Requiem Liturgy will
start at 9:00 followed by a Panachida (service for the deceased) and
the reading of the Hramoty (names of our departed loved ones).
Summer Sunday Liturgy
The liturgy on Sunday moves to the 10:00 time slot for the months of
June, July and August.
N e x t S u n d a y i s
Pentecost! The church
will be adorned in green,
symbolizing “new life.” At
the start of liturgy the
kneeling prayer will be
taken, as we resume
that posture for our
prayers.
Parish Picnic
Our picnic chairpersons
Jack Pinchot and Lisa Greb,
with regret, have decided
to cancel this year’s picnic due to the
uncertainty of the restrictions that will still be
in place come July. (The Men’s Club
however is hoping to hold some type of
gathering in June or July celebrating our
return to worship as a parish family. Stay
tuned for details down the road.)
Congratulations!
Congratulations to Phil and Pat Costantino
who had their marriage blessed on
Saturday. Pat will receive the Sacrament of
Confirmation/Chrismation on Sunday prior
to the liturgy. They will then receive the
Eucharist for the first time as a couple. Grant
O Lord to Your Servants Phillip and Patricia
many years of peace, health and
happiness!
Parish Sympathies
During this time of shut-down we have had
two deaths. Carol Sandy died in March
(sympathies to her husband Bill). Frank
Mikolay passed away last month
(sympathies to his son Frank).
Please remember all the sick/
suffering in your prayers,
especially Kathryn Durst
(Parkside Villa; rehab) and
Bea Chrustic (home).
Sandwich Making
Sandwich making has been suspended until
the distancing rules get relaxed.
Building Commission Meeting
The Building Commission will meet on
Wednesday at 6:00 in the choir loft.
Pictures of our Graduates
Father will accept pictures of high school
and college graduates (they will be
returned) for display in the vestibule the first
week of June. Drop them off at the office
when you come to the church.

The Rosary: Unpacked by a
Former Protestant
As an Evangelical taking baby steps towards Catholicism, I
thought Mary was alright and most of what Catholics said about her
sounded right, too. For me, Mary was OK, but Marian devotions and
rituals like the Rosary were wholly foreign and frightening. The Rosary
felt so European, like something Italian grandmothers would cling to
in the back pews of dusty churches. The Rosary felt complicated,
inaccessible, and unnecessary; I didn’t speak the language, I didn’t
know all the rules—I had no idea where to begin.
I knew that the Hail Mary made up a large part of the Rosary and I
knew that somewhere in there faithful Catholics also meditated on
certain “mysteries” from the life of Jesus. I didn’t know or understand
what those were, or what that meant, and that was the inaccessible and complicated bit.
So, I picked up a book and there, tucked away in the last chapter, was a detailed explanation of
the Rosary. It turns out that the practice of the Rosary is like a complete Bible study on beads.
At the heart of the Rosary are meditations on particular scenes from the Scriptures. This is what
makes the Rosary a mini Bible study. This is what made the Rosary so popular for catechesis in the
Middle Ages. There are four different sets of mysteries and the Church recommends that they’re
prayed on different days of the week. Each set of mysteries—the Joyful Mysteries, the Luminous
Mysteries, the Sorrowful Mysteries, and the Glorious Mysteries—contains five scenes within them for
meditation.
The scenes from the Luminous Mysteries, for example, are:
 The Baptism of Jesus
 The Wedding Feast at Cana
The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God
 The Transfiguration
The Establishment of the Lord’s Supper
The goal of the Rosary is to meditate, prayerfully, on these scenes. As a participant in the Rosary,
you become a prayerful participant in these biblical scenes.
