WELCOME TO PERUGIA, ITALY

AND to OUR ANCIENT UNIVERSITY!

Dear friends and colleagues, We are very much honoured to welcome all of you to Perugia, in the very “green” centre of Italy, also thanks to the cooperation of the Italian colleagues who invited us to take part in Annex 69, some years ago.

After the great start of the discussion in Ottawa and in San Antonio, now we are more than happy to host the 3rd Experts’ meeting of IEA EBC Annex 79, which links the key scientists from all around the world investigating building occupancy and energy related behaviour, multidimensional comfort and well-being in the built environment, under the framework of human-centred green building design. We are also happy that many participants have spent some time travelling around Italy for conferences and finally for this meeting. We are at the very end of this “Italian scientific tour” we hope you enjoyed!

We are sure you have been taking advantage of pleasant weather, food, tourism opportunities that our country is able to offer. Perugia, capital of Umbria Region, is the place to be in case you are interested in ancient art from the Etruscans to the Middle Ages, religion and peace, tranquillity and good local food. Umbrian people are typically shy, so please do not worry if they do not look like very friendly. This is also the beauty of a very quiet destination like our city. Despite that, we have been historically a very university-oriented city with an international vocation. Our University was created in 1308 and, since then, it has been attracting students from all around Italy (about 30% to 40%) and from all over the world (about 20%). This happens also thanks to many recent bilateral agreements we have undersigned with our partner universities in the USA, China, etc. This may be the chance also to establish closer cooperation with your institutions, in case you are interested in!

Our meeting takes place in the engineering campus of our University, and we hope this will be an opportunity for you to visit our laboratories and research facilities and to establish pleasant synergies and further connections. In any case, we will have the possibility to visit the historical city centre before the social dinner on Monday night.

We wish to thank the whole EAP LAB (Environmental Applied Physics Lab) team, for the organization we made together with a team of experts, who helped us to better manage your incoming. We also wish to thank CIRIAF Interuniver-sity Research Centre and the Department of Engineering for supporting the ad-ministrative and scientific preparation of the meeting and the whole University of Perugia for giving us the chance to participate to these internationally-oriented events we are always happy and proud to get inspired with. Therefore, we sincerely wish you will enjoy the meeting and the whole Umbrian Experience in the next two days, hoping that this experience will further con-tribute to foster creativity and curiosity around building occupants’ behaviour and people wellbeing in the built environment.

Please feel free to ask for information or support to any member of the organizing team, to make your stay in Perugia more comfortable and enjoyable. The organizing team
