chat with our team, he shares his views on the printing industry and the upcoming PAMEX. Excerpts.

Congratulations on being the AIFMP president. As the president of AIFMP, what would be your key focus areas?

Basu: Thanks from core of our heart from Team AIFMP 2015-16. Today, root of our entire problem is shortage of job, which causes unhealthy competition among us. Our team’s main focus will be Export Promotion as well as reduction of imported printing materials. There is a huge scope of printing job from abroad. Our printer friends are now well equipped with modern technology, machinery and equipments. It is a continuous process, I am sure our Team will do needful so that in near future Indian printer will do big business in abroad. Our honourable prime minister dream "Make in India" will be fulfilled.

What is the future of the printing industry in general and Indian printing industry in particular?

Basu: Though there is a threat to printing industry due to online channels like e-mail, Facebook, e-book, etc, but

print industry has sustained despite all odds. Considering day to day increasing literate people in India and per capita consumption of paper, in India, the demand of printing will increase for coming five to seven years. I can say in near future printing industry will grow in good ratio in India.

What according to you are the strengths and weaknesses of the Indian printing industry?

Basu: In my view, the most positive sign in our industry is more educated young generation joining the printing industry. They are very much capable of adopting the modern technology. While, the shortage of technically skilled manpower is the most disadvantage for adopting new technology. Previously experienced people were running the unit. Nowadays educated technically competent persons are a must behind the machines and equipments.

AIFMP has to take a vital role for developing educated, technically sound workforce for our printing industry. Our

team also has some positive proposal throughout India. We will place our proposal in forthcoming GC meeting in Mumbai as it is also a continuous process of work. The industry is looking up at PAMEX in Mumbai. What are your views on the upcoming PAMEX and how important is it for the industry?

Basu: PAMEX is the trendsetter in India as like drupa on international level.

This time, PAMEX will be biggest in terms of number of national and international exhibitors, sq m booking (live demo of modern machineries, equipments and consumable) and most important aspect for any exhibition footfall from length and breadth of India. PAMEX Core Committee and co- organiser have given their utmost effort for success of PAMEX 2015. We are trying visitor promotion in every part of India through our 70 affiliates & core committee.Any message for our readers....

pAMEX comes at an appropriate time as we are in the cusp of economy, which is coming back to the growth

path. It is very visible with the interest that has been slightly brought down by the banks and the lending power is more. Consumerism is back and we just saw the greatest online sales, which was a huge success. People are spending money and these growth signs are also fuelling the print economy,” shares Puneet Datta, director of Professional Printing Products Group, Canon India.

“Thus, PAMEX will help printing industry to showcase new solutions or new products to the west and there will be lot of visitors from the southern and northern regions, where the market is big. Infact, the west has almost 30% of the India’s printing economy. We are looking at entrepreneurship coming up. West has always been the fertile ground for printing hubs, and now they are not just confined to central Mumbai but are also expanding to other regions and going for larger infrastructure. There seems to be a tremendous growth in population as well, thereby increasing the scope of the industry,” he adds optimistically.

Talking about their participation at PAMEX, Puneet shares that they have increased their stall (E20), space that’s courtesy the timing. “We are upbeat about this exhibition. We will showcase the whole length and breadth of Canon solutions, right from commercial printing to wide format to Dreamlabo albums, which has created a buzz in the industry. We are also utilizing this platform to launch some new products in the commercial printing segment. The newly launched wide format products will also be a part of the display,” he adds.

On asking about the solutions to be showcased at the fair, he replies that they will showcase web-to-print solutions,

p e r s o n a l i z a t i o n , applications on high speed machines like transactional/direct mail and specialised a p p l i c a t i o n s , e s p e c i a l l y formulated for

PAMEX. He talked about application for schools where digital printing can be used for various collaterals like progress cards on untearable paper, bookmarks, I-cards, personalized diaries, certificates, table top calendars, name slips, etc. “These applications are there but it is how to bring printers to make use of these applications, is what we are targeting at. This helps build a brand value to a school, besides giving enough job for the digital printer. We also looking at new segments where digital printing can be used,” he adds. He also cited another example of health cards/medical reports to be printed in non-tearable paper in hospitals for cross-reference at later stage.

Another important point that Puneet mentioned was that they are planning to work on their project ‘Demystify the dynamics of digital printing.’ “Everyone knows that the future is digital but offset printers are still wary of it. They rather outsource it as they have their hands full and they are skeptical to bring new machines which needs new people to run them. This is because finishing in digital is different. Here, PUR is used for binding as sewing is very costly in digital. So, how do you demystify digital printing. We have built a small ROI for short-runs as well. Here, we are specifically focusing on black-and-white as for the commercial printers, it is the next step. Later, we will

do it for colour as well,” he shares. “We are not trying to conjure up something digital, but will like to simplify digital

printing. This will be knowledge-sharing activity and create differentiation towards digital printing. Offset will continue to grow in India, despite all odds but digital will complement offset but portion of digital will significantly increase as new applications will come in.”

He also shares that a research in Europe shows that almost 50% of offset printers with digital printing recorded significant increase in revenue due to value-added service. While, traditional printers who did not go for digital printing recorded a decline in revenue. “So, embracing digital is the future. It’s not a question of should I do it, the question is when do I do it,” he shares.

On asking about the growth in the digital printing segment, Puneet shares that placement of hardware in digital colour printing is growing at 10-15%.Wide format is gaining shape, inkjet acqueous rammed up market share from 9% to 17%. “Wide format is getting eco-conscious and UV flatbed is not only eco-friendly but also very creative. The inkjet acqueous will also see a huge demand in both print volumes as well as hardware sales. Print volumes are increasing as retail signages are increasing as offers keep on changing pretty soon. There are frequent sales and retail signages are a biggest draw. As the fight between online and brick-and-mortar shops continue, retail signages will play a bigger role, he opines.

“On the production printing side, we see a momentum in transactional printing which is fuelled by e-governance initiatives like UID project. Direct mail is coming back to hard paper. This is because every day we receive 10-15 EDMs (electronic document management) but time is getting shorter and subject line is important. Thus, many times the information goes unnoticed. But, when you receive a mailer on paper, you are bound to take a glimpse at it. Thus, more and more marketers are realizing to decluttering themselves from mobile and desktop. This trend has already started in Europe and it has started with a few customers in India as well. The idea is innovation in direct mails.. Thus, the overall perspective of print is positive and we are looking at how digital can be used by PSPs to add value to their prints,” concludes Puneet on a happy note.

Embracing digital is the future! At PAMEX, Canon will not only showcase the complete range of their products and launch new products in commercial printing, they will also help demystify the dynamics of digital printing. Here, Puneet Datta, director of Professional Printing Products Group, Canon shares more about their participation.

hP has introduced a new portfolio of HP PageWide XL Printers with the launch of HP PageWide XL

8000 Printer in India, offering the fastest large-format production printing available in colour and black-and-white.

HP PageWide XL Printers do the job of two printers in one single device, providing monochrome and colour prints at breakthrough speeds up to 60 percent faster than the fastest monochrome light-emitting diode (LED) printer. Included as part of the new portfolio, the HP PageWide XL Blueprinters are also designed to deliver more pages of translucent prints, black-and-white prints and digital blueprints with superior quality.

The new printers will enable reprographic houses, print service providers (PSPs), enterprise central reprographic departments (CRDs) and print corners to produce computer-aided design (CAD) drawings and will open new business opportunities with geographic information system (GIS) maps, point-of-sale applications and posters.

“Our large-format printing customers are continually exploring ways to improve productivity, streamline workflow and reduce costs,” said Devang Karia, country manager, Large Format Design, PPS, HP India. “The HP PageWide XL Printers deliver what our customers have been seeking for years and will revolutionise the production printing market, offering affordable, high-quality black-and-white and colour output in a single device at the fastest speeds available.”

HP PageWide XL Printers are the first products introduced under the new HP PageWide sub-brand. Based on proven HP PageWide Technology, which currently powers HP Inkjet Web Presses, HP business printers will be scaled for

upcoming HP 3D Multi Jet Fusion printers, the new portfolio delivers on the announcement made last year, providing low operation costs driven by life-long printheads, high ink efficiency and cloud-based support.

“Changing customer demands have caused us to look for opportunities to address the print needs of new markets, including advertising and communication, in addition to servicing our core customer base of architecture, engineering and construction firms,” said Chuck Wingard, president and owner, Tree Towns Imaging & Color Graphics. “The HP PageWide XL 8000 Printer will enable us to streamline our workflow with one printer for a variety of high-quality black-and-white and colour jobs at high speeds and will fill the gap between our existing technology to better service our diverse customer base.” Streamlining large-format printing workflow increases productivity

Water-washable flexo plates

Fujifilm has recently launched an advanced new water-washable flexo plates, Flenex FW. Label converters can benefit from this high quality and low cost-in-use

flexo plates.Flenex FW is a photopolymer

plate containing a special rubber-based compound that is not oxygen sensitive, minimising the effect oxygen has on the dot shape. As a result, Flenex guarantees reduced dot gain and better ink transfer for cleaner and brighter print results. The plate delivers longer runs for label converters, while producing a consistent 200 lpi at 4,400 dpi. Flenex FW reduces platemaking processing times to less than 40 minutes, three times faster than leading solvent systems and 1.5 times faster than current thermal and water-wash technologies. This enables label businesses to increase the number of plates they can produce in a given time, and also achieve a faster turnaround. Flenex FW eliminates the expense of higher-cost solvent and thermal processors, as well as potential upcharges on associated consumables, and why it represents the lowest cost-in-use flexo plate production system.

Compatible with the leading flexo platesetters and water-wash processors, the Flenex FW plate will be part of an integrated production environment, which will also include a dedicated label workflow solution.

Creating value chain to meet the increasing demands for newer applications among customers,

yarning for advanced technologies, Konica Minolta Business Solutions India has taken on all possible verticals—be it in production, technological solutions, fresh innovations, customer service—covering whole gamut of parameters including education, healthcare and many others. “Now, we have covered all domains, left nothing untouched; look at the eco-system of our existing customers, it includes all, be it graphic art, commercial printing, book printing, photo albums, packaging and others,” says V Balakrishnan. In this, everyone knows Konica Minolta as a manufacturer of measuring instruments for industrial and healthcare applications, inkjet printheads and textile printers for industrial use and related consumables and solution services.

Of the gamut of activities for which Konica Minolta has been known for decades, book printing is one such arena where a number of book publishers across the country are gainfully running KM monochrome presses for the purpose. “In addition to print production, we are now into e-books as well; converting books for e-learning contents,” mentions V Balakrishnan, adding that other allied activities in this domain, which Konica Minolta monochrome machines are engaging include in-house print productions of report cards, question papers and others such documents for schools, colleges and academic institutes. According to Balakrishnan, what Konica Minolta has been leveraging is to add value of digital printing to offset, rather than looking at it as an alternative.new dimension

Unpacked this year during the PRINTPACK INDIA 2015 expo, Konica Minolta’s landmark introduction of JET

Varnish 3D (from MGI Digital Graphics) to the Indian market has opened up a new paradigm shift in spot varnishing, adding highly allured 3D effects on digital prints and allowing to varnish upto 2298 A3 pages per hour. Saving time and cost, this digital solution application can be prepared on demand as well. “Of course, this UV spot varnishing machine lends a big opportunity to the packaging segment as well,” explains Balakrishnan.

Balakrishnan further details the machine’s added advantages and competencies in terms of make-ready time and auto-registration, “JET Varnish 3D is equipped with ARC (automated registered camera) designed to calibrate coating registration from sheet to sheet,” he explains, adding that the machine is perfectly designed for premium products rather than mass scale consumer products. Till date, a printing firm has already adopted the JET Varnish 3D and expecting the count to be multiplied sooner than later. Mobile app

As things around us get gradually escalating online these days, mobile apps play vital tool in every aspect and Konica Minolta is not missing the bandwagon in this as the company has recently launched its PageScope Mobile App for iphone and ipad, which is a novel application that allows users to easily connect to KM presses from mobile devices through Wi-Fi. “This mobile device enables users to print documents, images and could import scanned data to any KM printer that supports this application,” explains Balakrishnan. PageScope Mobile App can store data in different locations, such as My Document, Online Storage, Mail and Web pages being spooled into the PageScope My Print Manager server, which can eventually be printed using a printer that has been registered in the app.

Konica Minolta touches upon the whole universe of printing solutions

Ever awaited KM-1 cut-sheet inkjet press likely to hit the Indian market soon

Fresh competencies as well as value additions that have been constantly augmenting their machine portfolio, advanced imaging technologies, manpower and so forth in the swing accelerate Konica Minolta Business Solutions India into a new motion, which has set them stride along the changing market dynamics. V Balakrishnan, executive general manager–marketing, sales & marketing division, Konica Minolta Business Solutions India Pvt Ltd reveals such developments in an exclusive chat with SK Khurana, editor Print & Publishing over a cup of high tea at Digital Imaging Square (DIS) at their Gurgaon office.

When asked how secure the app device from misuse, Balakrishnan says the device is full proof from any maligned activities as it supports authentication and secure printing on the KM devices connected to it. “You have mobile phone, but if you are not authenticated by the printer which is equipped with authentication device designed as similar as that of the one used in highest level of financial transaction, there is not even a thin chance of infiltration,” he explains. photo albums

In the land where weddings are not mere occasions but professional mass-scale celebrations and people substantially spend huge every year, Konica Minolta genially captures this big-fat Indian nuptial ethos with a special attention on the provision of photo album printing/making to cherish the treasured moments forever in finest textured photo prints. Of course, a robust line of KM presses is available for excellent photo printing jobs, but the JET Varnish 3D is yet

another proven excellence into this grasp. According to Balakrishnan, Konica Minolta provides relative software for all aspects of printing, be it photo, commercial, books, among others, which eventually help printers customise any sort of prints.

When it comes to counting the number of KM printing presses running in the Indian market, it is being enumerated that Konica Minolta has delivered more than 300 bizhub PRESS C70hc, which features high chroma image quality and it boasts high-speed production of 70 ppm in colour and monochrome. In fact, this press raises the bar in digital production with its fast and efficient RGB workflow that makes colours that pop, texts that grab attention and images that practically leap off the pages. Balakrishnan points out bizhub PRESS C8000 and C1060 are also suitably engineered for such outputs.

Categorically, around 30 percent of KM presses have been installed in the offset printing houses in India. As of now, a collective figure of more than 2300 digital production presses are currently running across the country; on other side, more than 60,000 MFPs of the company have been sold and these devices contribute a lot to the innovative front, engaging in groundbreaking technologies like cloud computing. But the popularity and concept of cloud printing, as Balakrishnan observes, is now in a developmental stage in the country. Demo centres and labs

“Apart from our existing DIS (Digital Imaging Square) in Gurgaon where visitors are privileged to experiment a line of all models of KM machines, we have recently unveiled two labs where equipped every single model that has so far been sold in the Indian market, including JET Varnish

3D,” mentions B a l a k r i s h n a n . He counts other popular KM models being put on display in the labs and DIS as: bizhub PRESS C1060, bizhub PRESS 1250, bizhub PRESS 1052 as well as a line of MFPs like bizhub 283, bizhub C221,

bizhub C454, bizhub 283, bizhub C754, among others.

In addition, Balakrishnan elaborates that the newly introduced labs are designed as complete customer care corners as visitors can experience the whole gamut of Konica Minolta’s activities and products. It’s not only the machines but also the solutions, including software packages, such as Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator, among others are accumulated in a perfectly arranged manner in the labs to serve the need of their customers. Colour projects

‘Right colour’ is one of the biggest challenges ever faced by the printing professionals these days. Sensing this need to the core level, Konica Minolta has taken up a series of workshops called ‘Demystifying Colour’ conducted in different cities, inviting their customers to educate them the fundamentals of colour and right management of it. “We invite our customers to come along with their media, their own print files and challenges to the workshops,” says Balakrishnan. So far, three Demystifying Colour workshops have been conducted and Konica Minolta is targeting to make it 15 this year itself. KM-1 arrival

Excitement is that Konica Minolta is getting set to bring KM-1 to the market. The machine is constructed with press chassis from KOMORI and the company’s very own UV inkjet technology, expected to be a big showcase at drupa 2016 to be staged from May 31–June 10 in Dusseldorf. KM-1 runs at the speeds of 3,300 sph in simplex and 1,650 sph in duplex modes, capable to outpour prints in 1200 dpi resolution. Rejoice is for book printers as KM-1 can produce a

maximum sheet size of 750x585 mm, which in turn can print three book jackets per sheet, taking a range of substrates, including heavy, textured stocks.

Suitably engineered for high-speed commercial printing as well as short print runs to a given deadline and processing variable data, the arrival of KM-1 will open a new chapter of quality and competence in the Indian digital printing market, covering varied aspects of various spheres.

GOSS Autoplate automatic plate-changing was first introduced on M-600 press in 1995, offering

the ability to plate up an entire press in less than three minutes due to a simple, precision-engineered sequence. Plates were placed into cassettes on the printing units while the press was running or idle; then, at the push of a button old plates were automatically rotated off the cylinders and replaced by the new ones. All or any combination of plates could be changed in this way.

Jean-Pierre Moioli, product manager, GOSS International explained that despite initial skepticism, live demonstrations at trade shows and open houses, together with field experience, rapidly established Autoplate technology as the flag-bearer for web press automation. “The beauty of the system was – and is – the simplicity of its operation made possible through precision engineering, without requiring extra cleaning or maintenance,” he further elaborated, adding, “With the realization that the shorter the run, the greater the benefit, came a freedom to explore run lengths beyond those traditionally associated with web offset and even to compete with sheetfed.” around the world

Today, more than 2100 GOSS Autoplate units are in operation on a range of commercial and newspaper presses worldwide, including M-600, Sunday 2000, 4000 and 5000, and Colorliner CPS press systems. In addition, its development has directly influenced a range of additional

GOSS celebrates 20 years of breakthrough in press automation technology

More than 2100 GOSS Autoplate units now running worldwide across wide range of sectors

As of now, 20 years of introduction of its Autoplate technology has driven GOSS International to set a landmark achievement in the history of offset printing. Introducing reductions in makeready time, labour and expenses, the Autoplate innovation has extended the web offset advantages and created opportunities across a wide range of sectors and applications. We take you to a quick flashback.

newspaper printers exhilarated

Most recently, as the single, most significant enabling technology of the Magnum Compact press, GOSS Autoplate knowhow has led to a new era for newspaper printers and publishers. In reducing makeready time by as much as 90 percent, the Magnum Compact press lowers the break-even point of economical newspaper production. Combined with additional features such as consistent high quality, wide substrate flexibility, heatset options, and a versioning tool, this development provides the means to reach into new markets particularly for those that currently produce small to medium circulation publications.

Eric Bell, director-marketing, GOSS International, said, “Through our decades of experience with Autoplate technology, we were able to develop a simple, cost-effective system entirely unique to this sector.” In providing the ability to change plates in 30 seconds and to complete a full job changeover in less than five minutes, printers can fill the press with work even in the shortest production window.

“The breakthrough with the Magnum Compact press is a perfect example of the legacy of Autoplate technology in general,” concluded Ericl. He recollected that GOSS product designers, back in 1995, could foresee the level of competition today but, bit by bit, as margins have become tighter and harder-won right across the board, the crucial advantages of Autoplate have been unlocking new potential.

Goss is represented by SL Kulkarni Cyril Graphics (hall 1, Stall i06, paMEx’15).

GOSS innovations in industrialised print production, which include: the ‘96-page’ web offset press, creating new economies for very high-volume commercial printing and directly challenging the lower-volume gravure industry; non-stop edition change (NSEC) which ensures further time, energy and waste savings in makeready particularly for high-volume versioning; Automatic Transfer (AT) printing for on-the-run edition changes, eliminating conventional makeready requirements in some applications.

Jean-Pierre said, “Our M-600 experience made the wider press format possible with the same design, creating more opportunities for printers – and the larger the plate, the greater the benefits.” He added that one of the main goals achieved is reliability, proven by field experience with close to 100 percent plate change success. In the case of AT, GOSS International’s customers running 48-page format press lines that are changing more than 700 plates a day.

Sharing a unique Scodix project, Darren described a wine box his company coated for a Minneapolis printer. “We applied heavy coverage over the entire wine box, running 2-up on 20 x 29-in sheet. The final product looked amazing, very high-end, which was what the customer was aiming for. It’s sure to create a tactile sensation making it a memorable piece for the customer,” he said. Another Scodix project comprised numerous business cards that displayed delicate detail and design. Using Scodix on a business card tends to leave a lasting impression on anyone who receives one.

D a r r e n said Scodix has allowed K e n n i n g O u t s o u r c e Group to leap beyond its c o m p e t i t i o n . Even better, he said, it allows our clients to leap beyond their c o m p e t i t i o n . “It’s a big

deal for designers,” he said. “It’s a way to enhance print in a way that hasn’t been available before, it’s a new ‘tool’ in their toolbox. The Scodix process becomes an imaging dream come true – you immediately see and feel the difference, it’s stunning.”

Publisher’s Note…PAMEX comes at an opportune time

india is one of the few countries where printing industry is growing, despite all odds. Digital printing is increasing its share by coming up with new applications.

While the battle between online and brick-and-mortar shops continues, retail signages have a larger role to play and brand offers change frequently, thereby increasing the scope of in-shop signages. On the other hand, printed mailers are now making a comeback as people are aiming at decluttering their mobiles and desktops.

Similarly, newspapers still have a significant role for advertisers. More recently, major online retailers came up with aggressive campaign in newspapers.

Besides, packaging is one of the fastest growing segment and this trend is sure to continue. Amidst all these positive signals, PAMEX comes at an opportune time. Many exhibitors are upbeat about the industry and are showcasing the whole gamut of their products/services. New launches will also be a significant part of the show.

Come, be a part of PAMEX!–Varsha Verma, Project Editor
