Then they fe lt th e need for a com m unity h a ll an d the com m unity w orked as one m an in tran sp o rtin g an old corrugated iron w arehouse belonging to Libby, McNeil and Libby P lan ta tio n C om pany across th e bay to a plot of ground nex t to th e ball p ark . Dr. M ildred Staley, as usual, s ta r te d off th e g ifts for th is land with $100.00. And th e n Mr. T. J. T here w ere 296 gifts in all—th e sm allest $1.00 an d th e la rg e s t $100.00. The to ta l of $2,575.00 w as reach ed a n d th e la n d bough t from the Bishop T ru s t Com pany.

In 1930 they asked Bishop L itte ll to send som e one to them to hold services fo r th e m —one case in th is D istrict w here th e people have gone o u t a f te r th e Church instead of th e C hurch going c u t a f te r them . The Mission h as h ad a succession of p ries .s a n d lay readers, bu t no resid en t p ries t u n til Ju n e 1944.

Dr. Staley owned a piece of lan d a q u a r te r of a mile away from th e M ission an d she gave th is land for a vicarage. The co ttage w as com pleted a n d th e Rev. and Mrs. W. Feeling sure th a t we would have th a t lan d , an d n o t being able to get m a te ria ls on accoun t of th e w ar, a pre-fabricated house was pu rchased . T he p u rch ase p rice was refunded to St. Jo h n ’s -b y -th e -S e a .

We w an t to keep the land on w hich th e rec rea tio n h a ll s ta n d s b u t we have a small lot on th e lower level w hich we hope we can dispose of eventually . W hen th e f in a l p ay m e n t on th e new lot is m ade, we will have a ro u n d $7,700 tow ard the church building. I t is s till d ifficu lt to g e t m a te ria ls and un til we know w h a t m a te ria ls a re availab le , we cannot get an accu ra te es tim a te of th e f in a l cost for the Church—but w ouldn’t i t be g rea t, if on St. Jo h n ’s Day, December 27 in th e y ea r 1945—exactly fifteen years afte r St. Jo h n ’s w as s ta r te d —we h a d enough money on h an d to build a sm all, a t tra c tiv e C hurch and equip it?

There have been only two la rge g ifts fo r e ith e r the vicarage or th e C hurch—one fo r $2,000 an d one for $1,000— all th e rest have been in sm all am o u n ts w ith several for $100. Bishop L ittell h a s w ritten us th e following artic le :I have ju st read in th e H onolulu p ap e rs of th e d ea th

of John W aterhouse, K am a a in a pioneer, genial, gen e rous gentlem an. His in te re s ts w ere w ide-sp read an d his benefactions m any, a n d usually n o t publicised. Two recent gifts to our C hurch m ay well be recalled, however. As C hairm an of th e d irec to rs o f th e Mc- Bryde P lan ta tion on K auai, h e a rra n g e d w ith th e la te Frank Alexander, M anager, fo r th e o u tr ig h t tra n s fe r of the p lan ta tion h a ll a n d su rro u n d in g la n d a t Eleele to the Church. Mr. W aterhouse’s g ift to St. M ary’s, H onolulu several years ago, when th e Home a n d M ission w ere in im mediate prospect of being th ro tt le d by th e sa le of th e adjoining lot to Jap an ese for a tem ple, an d fo r co ttages, saved the situation . T he C hurch h a d f irs t chance to buy, but did n o t have $8,400 to buy w ith . A sh o rt interview w ith Mr. W aterhouse w as a ll th a t w as r e quired to s ta r t th e pu rch ase fu n d w ith $2,500. E n couraged w ith th is in h a n d , I w en t over to see Judge Alva S teadm an, P resid en t of th e Cooke T ru s t, an d Mr. Richard Cooke. In due season th e Cooke T ru s t sent $1,500 an d we bough t th e lan d . St. M ary’s M ission, with the help of several su b s ta n tia l g ifts, ra ised th e balance of the cost price an d now ow ns g ro u n d enough for long-needed developm ent.

Mr. John W aterhouse, like so m a n y pub lic -m inded members of th e old New E ng land m issionary fam ilies in Hawaii, gave generously to th e C hurch a n d w elfare agencies, when convinced of th e ir construc tive value. He will be greatly m issed in th e Islands.
