The School of Nursing is an integral unit of Hampton University and shares its goals and
ideals of excellence in the teaching-living-learning process. Nursing education at Hampton
University began with the Hampton Training School for Nurses in 1891. At the turn of the
century, Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute and Dixie Hospital (now Sentara
CarePlex) partnered to offer premier nursing education and health care for Peninsula
residents. Since 1944, the nursing faculty at Hampton University has provided high-quality
professional nursing education at the bachelor of science degree level. This undergraduate
program has the distinction of being the oldest baccalaureate nursing program in the
Commonwealth. In 1976, Hampton University instituted a master of science degree program
in nursing, making Hampton the first historically black college and university (HBCU) to
offer a master’s degree in nursing. In 1999, the School of Nursing achieved another
distinction when Hampton University instituted a PhD nursing program, the first at a HBCU.
The Center for Minority Family Health serves as the research arm of the School of Nursing.
The School of Nursing is approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing and is fully accredited
by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and the Commission on
Collegiate Nursing Education.
School of Nursing HAMPTON UNIVERSITY
Each new graduate is eligible to receive the Hampton University School of Nursing pin, which symbolizes the transition from student to nurse.
The School of Nursing’s pin is a representation of the middle
of the Hampton University seal. The official seal was
accepted in 1875 and only the name has changed as Hampton
has evolved from the Hampton Normal and Agricultural
Institute to Hampton Institute to Hampton University.
The symbols on the seal and the pin are a plow and sheaths of
grain; books of knowledge surmounted by a globe of the
world; a Bible stand; and, an old-fashioned printing press.
The sunrise over Hampton Creek symbolizes the rise of
educational opportunities, and the boat on the water
symbolizes the principal medium of transportation to
Hampton during its early history.

On behalf of the Hampton University administration, faculty, and staff, I want to extend my most heartfelt congratulations to you, your family, and friends. This Pinning Ceremony cele-
brates your hard work and achievement in completing a de-manding and rigorous course of study. You should be proud, as should all who supported and assisted you in your efforts.
Pinning is a day of celebration, and it also is a day of reflec-tion about what lies ahead. Whatever path you choose, I am confident you have acquired the skills you need to be success-ful. Whether you pursue a career in public service, private industry, or academe, I know you will make a difference.
It has been a privilege and a pleasure to host you during your
academic career. You have learned much, and the School of Nursing, in turn, has benefited from your presence. I hope you will recall your years here as being both happy and pro-
ductive. As members of the distinguished School of Nursing alumni, you will always be cherished here at Hampton University. I hope you will proudly wear your pin that identifies you as one who has been educated to
serve the health needs of society. Know that this symbol of service involves many profes-sional rights and responsibilities. We have equipped you with the tools necessary for suc-cess as we send you out into the world to be part of the next wave of public health re-searchers, educators, practitioners, advocates, and leaders. versity in May 2002 and became the first student to receive a PhD in
nursing from a Historically Black College and/or University. Dr. Morgan
also received her master’s of science in nursing from Hampton Univer-
sity and a bachelor’s of science in nursing from Florida State University.
Dr. Morgan completed a post-doctoral fellowship in health disparities
research at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.
Dr. Morgan has been a core faculty member at Walden University
School of Nursing since May 2010, where she serves as a lead faculty
member, course developer, and faculty mentor for the nursing program.
Dr. Morgan was former chair and associate professor at the Fayetteville
State University Department of Nursing (FSU-DON). Under her leader-
ship, NCLEX-RN board scores increased from 39% to 88%.
Dr. Morgan is certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Cen-
ter and American Academy of Nurse Practitioners as a family nurse practitioner (FNP). Since 1998, she has
practiced as a nurse practitioner in clinical areas, such as college health, women’s health, indigent care, pri-
mary care, and military health care. Currently, Dr. Morgan practices part-time as a FNP for CVS Caremark
Minute Clinic stores in Northern Virginia.
For the past several years, Dr. Morgan has worked as a nurse educator, researcher, and clinician. She has
been published in several peer-reviewed journals and presented at national conferences. Dr. Morgan serves as
a fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP) and member of the American Academy
of Nurse Practitioners, Association of Black Nursing Faculty, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society,

couples coping with breast cancer, and African Americans and colorectal cancer. She has served as a disserta-
tion committee member for three African American female PhD students whose research focused on African
Americans and colorectal cancer, college-age women and cervical cancer, and African Americans with HIV/
AIDS.
Dr. Morgan is passionate about helping others and working to improve health disparities among vulnerable
and underserved populations. Her latest research resulted in a $250,000 grant awarded by the Centers for
Medicare & Medicaid Services to implement a faith-based culturally appropriate colorectal cancer educa-
tional intervention for African Americans. This project increased colorectal cancer knowledge, decreased
cancer fatalism, and increased screening for colorectal cancer among African Americans in the southeastern
United States.
Dr. Morgan is an active member of the First Mount Zion Baptist Church Health Ministry in Dumfries, Vir-
ginia. She is a first aid volunteer for the Brownie Girl Scout Troop at Christ Chapel Academy in Woodbridge,

Dr. Barbara Wright began her career in nursing in 1966 when she
completed the LPN program at Dixie Hospital School of Practical
Nursing. In 1971, she decided to enroll at Thomas Nelson Commu-
nity College. She graduated in 1973 with an ASN and continued her
employment at Hampton General Hospital in the operating room as a
staff nurse. In 1974, Dr. Wright began working at the Veterans Ad-
ministration Medical Center as a staff nurse in the operating room.
The Veterans Administration encouraged nurses to pursue advanced
education in order to meet the standards for promotion, and Dr.
Wright completed both the BS (1979) and MS (1989) from Hampton
Institute/University while raising three children and working full
time. Positions held by Dr. Wright at the Veterans Administration
included staff nurse, nurse manager of the surgical unit, supervisor in
the operating room, and associate chief nurse.
Her teaching career began in 1991 at Troy State University in Montgomery, Alabama, and Troy, Ala-
bama, as adjunct faculty while working at the Veterans Administration in Montgomery, Alabama. After
retiring from the Veterans Administration, she returned to Virginia and began working at Hampton Uni-
versity, where she remained employed for 12 years. It was during her employment at Hampton Univer-
sity that she completed the requirements for the Doctor of Education degree. Shortly afterward, she ac-
cepted a position at Norfolk State University in the Department of Nursing with a teaching assignment
in the RN to BS Program. In 2010, she returned to Hampton University as Chair of the Department of
Undergraduate Nursing Education. Dr. Wright’s greatest joy has been influencing the many young stu-
dent nurses she has mentored throughout her professional career.
She served 16 years in the U.S. Army Reserves where she was a member of three Reserve units. Dr.
Wright retired from the Army at the rank of Major with an Honorable Discharge. Her primary roles in
