In an effort to make sure visitors are informed of the many amenities San Clemente and the surrounding areas have to offer, we have produced the 7th Annual Visitors Guide with information regarding San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point. Information contained in the Guide will be included in the Chamber Website.

Visitor Guide

The Chamber receives approximately 125 visitors a week, to our office, seeking information on San Clemente and the adjacent vicinities. In addition, we send out over 40 Visitors & Tourism information packets through the mail, per week. Marketing the three cities together, guests realize that San Clemente is truly a destination municipality. As a result, visitors recognize the many features the area has to offer.

The Guide includes information pertinent to visitors and will feature member businesses that are relevant to the tourism market. This is a free member benefit.

Website & iPad

One of the elements of the Chamber website is “Visit San Clemente.” These pages contain information that is currently published in our Chamber’s Visitors Guide. In addition, the Guide was formatted to be utilized on the IPad.

The City of San Clemente and Council Members-Mayor Jim Evert, Mayor Pro Tem Tim Brown, Lori Donchak, Jim Dahl and Bob Baker, along with the City Manager George Scarborough are to be commended for seeing the vision and making this projects possible. In addition, special thanks to Shelly & Don Kindred, Kindred Associates for design, artwork & photos.

San Clemente homeless Shelter lease halted... For now

The San Clemente City Council has voted NO on the proposed homeless shelter in the Rancho San Clemente business park.

The unanimous decision received a 0-4 vote against the suggested 10-year lease at 950 Calle Negocio.

Tuesday, August 20th City Council meeting was standing-room-only. Local business owners, concerned citizens, an ACLU representative, housing advocates, and a current homeless resident were in attendance. In total, close to 40 individuals took the microphone to express their opinions on the hot-topic issue.

City Manager, James Makshanoff, voiced his disapproval of the homeless shelter. He also revealed new information from a previous lawsuit about the homeless issue. Makshanoff shared that once a shelter is full, the Sheriff’s Department would not be able to enforce anti-camping laws. The anti-camping laws are only enforceable if there are available beds at a local shelter. The City also could not restrict shelter services to only the local population. Any individual arriving from outside the city would have the same right to a San Clemente shelter bed. Ties to the area’s people or places are not required as a qualifier for City-provided services.

Regional Issue

Dan Bane, Mayor Pro Tem, stated this situation is a complex issue. He stated the City does want to do something for the homeless that have ties to San Clemente. Bane continued that the current solution was voted against because there would be no limit on “the folks that we are responsible for.”

Bane outlined that San Clemente should not be the “regional clearinghouse for all of the homeless people in Orange County.” A regional answer will be the next steps taken by the Council, Bane shared, earning applause from the audience.

Future Unknown

As a final note on the matter, Bane issued a word of caution to the business park occupants. He stated that the area is SB-2 zoned, allowing a homeless shelter of 35 beds or less without discretion from the city.

“If a private entity wants to pull a permit for a shelter anywhere in that (business) park, there could be a shelter there. There is nothing that you or the City can do about it by State law,” Bane warned.

CC&R’s To play A Role?

Andrew Fogg of the law firm Cox, Castle and Nicholson pointed out that the CC&R’s could play an important role in fu-ture decisions. The CC&R’s were City mandated upon the construction of the business park. They govern uses and require developmental committee approval before permit requests to the City.

Fogg said the addition of reasonable rules could allow the development committee to reject certain uses should they dis-rupt harmony.

Stay tuned for more updates.

Sincerely,Jim Wynne at kidder Mathews

Chamber Honors Pillars of the Community

Someone in the community deserves to be recognized for their contributions. It could be a neighbor, a friend, a mentor or even a relative. Many selfless acts of volunteerism, dedication or bravery under duress go unnoticed. This is a chance to give those people the recognition they deserve from the community, which has benefited from their actions. Below are the awards, which will be presented at the Chamber’s Annual Meeting of Members, Installation of Officers and Award Ceremony held at the Bella Collina Towne & Golf Club on Thursday, February 20, 2020. This is your chance to help the unsung heroes of our city get the appreciation they merit.

Lifetime Achievement-Qualities which are taken into consideration in choosing a recipient for the prestigious “Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award” include: The recipient must live in San Clemente; their service to the community includes acts of heroism, humanitarianism or charitable and other “outstanding service” throughout their lifetime. The service performed must be voluntary and over the nominee’s lifetime. Nominations are encouraged from individuals and organizations.

Citizen of the Year-This award is presented to a recipient that resides in San Clemente, has served the community through acts of heroism, humanitarianism or charitable and other “outstanding service.” Service performed must be voluntary. Meritorious service must be within the last year. Nominations are encouraged from individuals and organizations.

Business of the Year-This award goes to a business which is a member of the San Clemente Chamber and is involved in the community through in-kind donations and service hours. They must have high business standards, including innovative progress techniques, support of business, customer service, ethics and image. Nominations are taken from the membership at large. Only Chamber members are eligible for this award.

Educator of the Year-This award is given on a rotating basis, where a different level (elementary, middle and high school) is honored yearly. Nominations are encouraged from individual and organizations. Note: Private school educators are also eligible.

If you wish to nominate an individual or business, complete the appropriate application and e-mail to the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce on or before the Second Friday in September. For more information call 492-1131 or visit us online at www.scchamber.com for applications.
