When we have the courage to step outside ourselves and act in the service of others,

we become heroes.

2017 was the year of the hero at SPIN, starting with the Wawa Foundation Hero

Award, which we received through thousands of votes from the community.

Our year was shaped by everyday people like you, working together to achieve

extraordinary things. Your stories inspired the theme of our annual report:

Heroes Made Here.

Heroes are made at SPIN because the people we support, our families, our

employees, our members and our community partners all understand that a simple

act of caring leads to a Life of Possibilities.

Thank you for all that you do.

Sincerely,

The Grant Family, PreK at SPIN Parkwood

In January 2017, Makayla Grant and 50 other children started their education

at SPIN’s Early Childhood Centers through funding provided by the City

of Philadelphia. The PHLpreK initiative gave more than 2,000 Philadelphia

working families access to quality pre-kindergarten.

Little did Makayla and her parents, Eric and LaKesha, know that they would

become heroes for families across the city. PHLpreK drew national attention

because the program was funded with the help of a controversial tax on sugary

drinks. Local and national media and representatives from the Mayor’s Office

gathered at SPIN’s Parkwood Early Childhood Center to document the

first day of school. Eric and LeKesha stepped up to tell their story and to

explain why high-quality preK programs are important for their daughter

and their family.

Eric had just finished an active duty Army career in South Korea. He and

LaKesha were looking to make a fresh start and wanted to enroll Makayla in

an affordable, inclusive and high-quality program that would prepare her for

kindergarten. At SPIN, Makayla now had the opportunity to be immersed in

hands-on experiences to develop her social and critical thinking skills. Fashion

shows, visiting animals, musical parades and nutritious eating were some of

Makayla’s favorite preschool experiences.

At the end of the school year, Makayla and her parents joined Parkwood’s

“Move-Up Ceremony” to honor her achievements. In addition, Eric

and LaKesha celebrated their own milestones: Eric was hired as a Direct

Support Professional at SPIN and both he and LeKesha have gone back to

school to continue their education. The Grant family are heroes at SPIN

because they raised their voices for others and worked together to achieve

a Life of Possibilities.

282Children like Makayla developed skills for success in SPIN’s preK programs.

FAMILY OF HEROES

Page 4: “The simple act of caring is heroic.” · 2017 was the year of the hero at SPIN, starting with the Wawa Foundation Hero Award, which we received through thousands of votes from

Nydir Rose, Autism Services

When Nydir Rose enrolled in SPIN’s Summer Therapeutic Activities Program

(STAP) in 2016, he had difficulty accepting feedback without having angry

outbursts. By the time he returned to the program for a second year, Nydir

arrived more mature, self-aware and determined to help others.

To encourage Nydir to reach his personal goals, the STAP support team offered

him a leadership role: to mentor younger, less experienced youth within the

program. He worked with them on structured activities like drawing and

cutting. He played with them and took part in their favorite hobbies. He

helped staff set up lunch and kept youth to their regular routines. And when

things got a bit challenging, he stayed calm and supportive. By the end of the

program, when Nydir entered the room, the kids cheered!

Nydir’s leadership at STAP has given him a whole new set of skills. He is more

confident. He has improved his ability to communicate and connect with

others. He has even learned how to cook and balance a checkbook. But perhaps

the most important lesson Nydir learned is this: Changing yourself may be

powerful, but leading others to change—that is heroic!

355Youth like Nydir improved their social-emotional outcomes through SPIN Autism Services.

HERO LEADING CHANGE

Page 5: “The simple act of caring is heroic.” · 2017 was the year of the hero at SPIN, starting with the Wawa Foundation Hero Award, which we received through thousands of votes from

Dan Farley, SPIN Pre-Employment Transition Services

Few can make a spreadsheet sing like Dan Farley. In January 2017,

the Excel wiz and special education student at MaST Charter School

came to explore a career in accounting at SPIN. With the help of SPIN’s

Pre-Employment Transition Services, Dan landed his dream role in

SPIN’s Finance Department. Funded by the Pennsylvania Office of Vocational

Rehabilitation, the program provides youth with valuable work experience

while still in school.

Dan spent two days a week at SPIN, with on-the-job support from an

Employment Specialist. Putting his talents to work, he reconciled the

organization’s largest and most detailed general ledger account. Dan impressed

the entire finance team; when he took ownership of a project, he saw it

through to the end!

Dan was as thoughtful as he was professional. On his last day, his coworkers

were surprised to find a spread of sweet treats. “Who brought the donuts?”

a team member asked. Dan responded with a smile, “I did! It was the

least I could do.”

Dan and his support team look back on this experience with pride. Not only

did he practice a skill in great demand within the accounting field, he learned

more about himself. Dan became the hero he always knew he could be.

720Students like Dan developed skills for the workplace and independent living through SPIN’s Pre-Employment Transition Services.

HERO ON THE JOB

Page 6: “The simple act of caring is heroic.” · 2017 was the year of the hero at SPIN, starting with the Wawa Foundation Hero Award, which we received through thousands of votes from

Donna Worthington, Residential Services

Donna Worthington struggled with Type 2 diabetes for many years.

In 2015 she decided she had struggled enough. Together with “Team

Donna”— Health Coordinators and Direct Support Professionals who

supported her to live at home in the community—she made a plan to

lead a healthier life.

Donna started by overhauling her diet. Her nutritionist prescribed

low-carb foods, while her support team encouraged her to drink water and

watch portion size. After consulting with her doctors, she began an exercise

routine. Two years later, Donna has lost over 80 pounds and no longer

needs insulin.

After seeing such dramatic results, Donna’s motivation has skyrocketed.

She swims and lifts weights with her friends at the YMCA. She also invites

them to her annual “Healthy Winter Gathering,” where she shares wholesome

recipes with the help of support staff.

On March 23, 2017, Donna was presented with the “Lehigh County Award

for Personal Achievement” for taking charge of her health. Her message

at the ceremony was “My choice, my size, Team Donna.” Through her

transformation, Donna became the hero of her own health and an inspiration

to countless others.

269Adults like Donna improved their quality of life with SPIN Residential supports.

HEALTHY HERO

Page 7: “The simple act of caring is heroic.” · 2017 was the year of the hero at SPIN, starting with the Wawa Foundation Hero Award, which we received through thousands of votes from

Community Participation Services at Glen Foerd Estate

In June 2017, adults and staff from SPIN’s Community Participation Services

summoned the courage to try something new: They rowed down the Delaware

River for the very first time.

SPIN was the first organization to participate in “Bike-to-Boat,” an initiative

of Glen Foerd Riverfront Estate to make local waterways accessible for people

of all abilities. Bike-to-Boat was one of many inclusive ways that SPIN has

partnered with Glen Foerd over the years. Other activities included

bee-keeping and tending the estate gardens.

The SPIN crew trained upriver on the docks of Bartram’s Garden where

they learned the basics of rowing and the importance of teamwork. By

the time their official day on the Delaware arrived, everyone roared with

excitement, ready to take on the open water! Sean Fitzgerald, one of

the crew’s supported adults, shared that he had trained in the gym and

lost weight in preparation for the trip.

Together, the crew accomplished what they once thought impossible. For these

heroes, the adventure at Glen Foerd was about more than fun and fresh air,

it was about building self-confidence and connecting with others.

127Adults like the Boat Crew became more engaged in the community with SPIN supports.

HEROES IN UNCHARTED WATERS

Page 8: “The simple act of caring is heroic.” · 2017 was the year of the hero at SPIN, starting with the Wawa Foundation Hero Award, which we received through thousands of votes from

Ashakeya (Keya) Dyches-Holly, Direct Support Professional Advocating to End the Workforce Crisis

Since 2007, state funding for intellectual disability and autism services

has flatlined, leaving many organizations unable to pay their most critical

workforce a living wage. As a result, Direct Support Professionals or “DSPs”

leave the field at an alarming rate. In 2017, the advocacy organization for

Pennsylvania providers, PAR, commissioned a video to educate government and

the public about the crisis. There was a search for two DSPs to appear in the

video—DSPs who were brave enough to tell their stories on behalf of thousands

more across the state.

SPIN recommended Keya. Typically quiet, always energetic, Keya is a

hard-working and a highly competent DSP for three women with intense

support needs. With courage and humility, she starred in the video, sharing

the sacrifices that her family has made so that people with disability can lead

meaningful lives.

Keya soon became the face of PAR’s “Fix The DSP Crisis” campaign. Her

powerful story touched the hearts of thousands of Pennsylvanians including the

legislature and the Governor himself. Thanks to Keya’s heroic act, state leaders

are taking steps in the right direction. In the summer of 2017, Pennsylvania

passed the most supportive budget for DSPs in a decade.

35,000DSPs in Pennsylvania are closer to earning a living wage because of Keya’s advocacy.

HERO OF HER PROFESSION

SPIN Community & Fitness

Known for over 20 years as the Norcom Community Center, SPIN’s

“gathering place” has long welcomed people of all abilities for fitness

and fun. Norcom Community Center transformed its facility in 2017.

With the support of members and staff, they renovated the space and

added new classes, a mobile membership app and state-of-the-art gym

equipment. In May, the center unveiled these changes under a new

name: SPIN Community & Fitness.

As SPIN Community & Fitness got underway, members were hard at

work on their own transformations. Josephine Bevilaqua, Allen Leighton

and Jeremy Cannon lost a collective 200 pounds through the center’s fitness

programs. After training with John Haughney, Josephine, at age 71,

can now deadlift 135 pounds! Allen shattered his goal in the center’s

Weight Loss Challenge and is now on track to become a police officer.

Jeremy won the 2016 Biggest Loser Challenge and became one of

SPIN Community & Fitness’ certified personal trainers.

Adults with disability and their support staff keep everyone at the center

motivated. With a last name made for fitness, Chris Feltwell developed an

online fan base for his powerlifting videos. Chris’ Direct Support Professional,

Bryan McNeil, lost over 55 pounds while inspiring other staff to work out.

SPIN Community & Fitness is full of fitness heroes, helping one another

to make friends and break barriers on the road to healthier lives.

894Members of all abilities met their fitness and recreation needs at SPIN Community & Fitness.

HERO WITH A TASTE FOR SUCCESSElizabeth Carlson, Employment Services

For several years, Elizabeth Carlson worked as a retail sales associate. While

she was always an excellent employee and loved her coworkers, Elizabeth did

not feel fulfilled. In March 2015, she shared with her support team that she

needed a change.

Elizabeth’s true passion is food. She has attended numerous cooking classes

and earned her ServSafe certificate in food preparation so she began working

with her SPIN Employment Specialist, Steve, to find a career that matched

her interests. During their job search, Elizabeth and Steve focused on

independently owned restaurants in her neighborhood. They also looked for

employers that were warm and welcoming, and would help her feel more

confident in her abilities as a chef.

In March 2015, Elizabeth met Aliza Green, head chef at Baba Olga’s Kitchen.

They made an instant connection. Not only did Aliza share Elizabeth’s

love of cooking, she was impressed with her culinary skills. Aliza quickly

welcomed Elizabeth to the team, where she is now in charge of baking intricate

desserts and catering large events like weddings and live music nights.

When Elizabeth is not busy perfecting new recipes, she likes to chat up

customers. Many of the people she meets are searching for the courage to

follow their dreams. For them and others, Elizabeth is a hero and a

source of inspiration.

189Adults like Elizabeth received support from SPIN to achieve their employment goals.
