Pastor’s Poetry Post-Its

This Sunday concludes the octave of Easter—eight days of intense joy bathed in the light of the Lord’s Resurrection. Today’s gospel tells of Thomas’ absence at Jesus’ appearance to His disciples and his flip expression of doubt. Ever since, he has been dubbed the “Doubting Thomas.” He is therefore a good patron saint for all of us who have ever questioned or doubted our beliefs. And let’s face it, we all have. The Protestant theologian, Paul Tillich, said that “doubt is not the opposite of faith; it is an element of faith.” His wise words remind us that our doubts impel us to grapple with our questions and drive us not to denial but to grow in our relationship with the God we cannot apprehend with our senses. Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel has beautifully written: “Doubt is an act in which the mind confronts its own ideas; wonder is an act in which the mind confronts the mystery of the universe.” Thomas, faced with the challenge to thrust his fist into Jesus’ open side, simply says with a heavy sigh: “My Lord and my God.” Dealing with our own doubts, we say the same in trying to grasp a Love beyond our comprehension.

“St. Thomas the Apostle”

“We do not know..how can we know the way?”

Courageous master of the awkward question,

You spoke the words the others dared not say

And cut through their evasion and abstraction.

Oh doubting Thomas, father of my faith,

You put your finger on the nub of things

We cannot love some disembodied wraith,

But flesh and blood must be our king of kings.

Your teaching is to touch, embrace, anoint,

Feel after Him and find Him in the flesh.

Because He loved your awkward counter-point

The Word has heard and granted your wish.

Oh place my hands with yours, help me divine

The wounded God whose wounds are healing mine.

Rev. Malcolm Guite (b. 1957)

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY April 8, 2018

The message of Divine Mercy is simple. It is that GOD LOVES US — ALL OF US! And, He wants us to recognize that HIS mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Thus all will come to share His joy. The Divine Mercy message is one we can call to mind by remembering ABC: A — Ask for His Mercy. B — Be merciful. C — Completely trust in Jesus. This message and devotion is based on the writings of Saint Faustina Kowalska.

JESUS, I TRUST IN YOU!

This weekend, as part of our celebration for Divine Mercy Sunday, our Offertory hymn is #509 God of Mercy by Fr. Ricky Manalo, CSP. Ricky Manalo is a Paulist priest who studied composition and piano at the Manhattan School of Music. He recently completed his doctorate in Liturgy and the Sociology of Religion. These days he is recognized as a leading authority on intercultural liturgical issues and music. He is a frequent lecturer, presenter and workshop leader throughout the country and specializes in offering highly practical applications and strategies. Ricky’s music can be found in Catholic and Protestant hymnals alike, and is one of our favorite composers! We use several of his hymns including In These Days of Lenten Journey, With One Voice, and the current Alleluia from his Mass of Spirt and Grace. His compositions have been used in papal masses celebrated by Pope Saint John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis. Fr. Manalo’s music incorporates themes of social justice, care for creation, and mercy. Fr. Ricky Manalo is currently teaching at Santa Clara University and the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, CA. When he is not traveling, he resides at Old St. Mary’s Cathedral in Chinatown, San Francisco.

Gospel: John 20:19-31: Jesus appeared to the disciples despite locked doors, breathed on them so that they could receive the Holy Spirit, and gave them the power to forgive sins in his name. Thomas, who was not present, refused to believe without seeing Jesus for himself. Jesus appeared again when Thomas was present, and told him, “Blest are they who have not seen and have believed.”
