'We have been flooded with calls': government on food delivery services during lockdown

The department of tourism has reiterated its stance on the operation of food delivery services saying on Wednesday that they would not be allowed to ... NEWS 1 week ago

This will negatively affect beef farmers'

finances. Overall, while lower agricultural

commodity prices, which we anticipate,

are favourable for consumers, the opposite

is true for farmers. Under such a scenario,

the question is whether farmers will be

able to generate sufficient revenue to

service their debts.

Admittedly, there are still a lot of

unknowns about how the Covid-19

pandemic will play out and the various

levels of indebtedness among farmers, but

a proactive policy response could help

prevent financial ruin for farmers,

particularly those of a small to

medium scale.

So far, the recent 100 basis points cut in

the interest rate by the South African

Reserve Bank has helped to reduce the

cost of debt. In the UK, financial

institutions have set mortgage payment

holidays of up to three months. However,

the unpaid interest will still be recovered

later.

It is unclear if such a policy response

would be plausible for SA, but in these

extraordinary times it might be something

worth considering and drawing lessons

from.

Perhaps the measures taken to support

small and medium enterprises should be

extended to the farming sector, given its

significance to food security.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19)

Is an infectious disease caused by a new virus.

The disease causes respiratory illness (like the

flu) with symptoms such as a cough, fever, and

in more severe cases, difficulty breathing. You

can protect yourself by washing your hands

frequently, avoiding touching your face, and

avoiding close contact (1 meter or 3 feet) with

people who are unwell.

HOW IT SPREADS

Coronavirus disease spreads primarily

through contact with an infected person

when they cough or sneeze. It also spreads

when a person touches a surface or object

that has the virus on it, then touches their

eyes, nose, or mouth.

SYMPTOMS:

People may be sick with the virus for 1 to 14 days before developing symptoms. The most

common symptoms of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) are fever, tiredness, and dry

cough. Most people (about 80%) recover from the disease without needing special

treatment.

More rarely, the disease can be serious and even fatal. Older people, and people with

other medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), may be more

vulnerable to becoming severely ill.

People may experience:

Ek is

getroud met Karen. Ons het 3 kinders, Phillip,

Anita en Ralph. My broer Mark het in 2006 saam

by die beeste is. Daar is ‘n gemengde boerdery

nl. varke, beeste, skape, saaiery en bosbou.

Walter en Kurt het ‘n gemengde beeskudde

gehad.

Walter het by Stockowners

Hy was ‘n uitstekende beeskenner, by wie ek

baie geleer het. Sy nederigheid, vriendelikheid, en

hulpvaardigheid sal altyd by my bly. So het Thiele

Ons

Tweedens, wanneer siekteveroorsakende organismes wel inkom of reeds teenwoordig is, moet die verspreiding daarvan in jou kudde gekeer of beperk word.

Page 9: “WE”€¦ · During the period of March to 20 April 2020, the SA Braford website had 173 unique visitors, largely made up of South Africa, the USA and France. Visitors spent an

9

5. Komplekse siektetoestande. Laastens is daar komplekse siektetoestande waar beide benaderings

ROOIVLEIS/REDMEAT VOL 11. NO 1 2020 – DR JOHN BECKER

Advancements in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequencing and genotyping technology have made it possible to augment conventional livestock breeding and performance management programmes with genomic information. These technologies will play a huge role in keeping happy (and profitable) the herds, farmers, and consumers of tomorrow. The main economic rationale for using genomic information in cattle breeding programmes is that it allows a breeder to assess an animal’s genetic merit for economically important traits (those that impact productivity and profitability) more accurately and sooner than using conventional performance measurements. The incorporation of genomic information also allows breeders to select for economically important traits that have not been available or been difficult to measure using conventional performance recording, such as fertility, feed efficiency, and carcass traits. Improving traits that matter – sooner There is evidence that the rate of genetic improvement of beef cattle can be greatly accelerated by including genomic information in performance measurement systems. The results of established livestock genomics programmes in other countries, such as Australia, suggest that the adoption of genomic technologies can significantly improve the productivity and sustainability of the beef industry, and improve animal welfare. The Beef Genomics Programme (BGP), a three-year multi-stakeholder initiative between industry and research entities in the beef production value chain, officially started on 1

April 2015 and drew to a conclusion on the 31 March 2018. The first phase of the programme can be considered successful and involved strong collaboration between industry, the Agricultural Research Council, and four higher education institutions, namely the universities of Pretoria, the Free State, Stellenbosch, and Fort Hare. First three years Activities undertaken in the first three years of the BGP laid the foundation for an accelerated, long-term, sustainable programme for genomics and genetic improvement of South African beef cattle breeds. The overall objective of the BGP is to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of beef production in South African and to increase the capacity of the industry to produce high-quality beef for local consumers. Considering that international programmes all take a long-term view, a 10 to 12-year window will potentially realise the biggest benefits to industry from additional programme-related activities. From the initial 15 breed societies that signed up to the consortium agreement, a further seven societies joined the programme through the initial phase and include Brangus, Tuli, Nguni, Braunvieh (Namibia and South Africa), Angus, and Droughtmaster.

Page 11: “WE”€¦ · During the period of March to 20 April 2020, the SA Braford website had 173 unique visitors, largely made up of South Africa, the USA and France. Visitors spent an

An economic impact assessment of the programme, commissioned by the Technology Innovation Agency, showed extremely positive results and economic returns comparable to that achieved in the Australian government’s Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) programme. It was shown that for every one rand invested in the BGP, a return of R3,08 could be expected. Collaborative groundwork A significant amount of groundwork was laid during the first phase, not least regarding cooperation and teamwork between (and within) industry and research groupings. It is worth mentioning that in the beef industry, a lot of distrust was evident among role players at the initiation of discussions aimed at establishing a livestock genomics consortium. Today, the cooperation between the following groups is clearly evident and collaborative research and development efforts have improved dramatically between:

a. Government and industry (especially the service providers servicing the beef industry at large), Stud Book, and the Livestock Registering Federation.

b. The two competing service providers mentioned above, which the industry is associated with.

c. Researchers and industry groupings - the research agendas

are now more closely aligned to industry needs.

All the stakeholders in the South African beef value chain (from specialist seed stock producer to consumer) will benefit in the long term from the anticipated acceleration in genetic improvement of South African beef herds under the BGP. However, further measures and programmes will need to be put in place to ensure that breeding objectives of seed stock producers are better aligned to industries further down the value chain - such as feedlots and retailers. The largest share of the benefits of the BGP, at least in the initial 10 to 15 years, are expected to accrue to the seed stock and commercial farming sectors (who also produce the majority of beef that is sold and consumed in South Africa). However, there is also significant potential for comparatively rapid genetic improvement in the small-scale and emerging herds (approximately four million cattle) off the current low base. A dedicated sub-programme targeting the more effective transfer of genetic improvement from seed stock producers to small-scale emerging farmers could greatly magnify the expected social, distributional, and economic impact of the BGP.
