Parish Posada Friday, December 21st
7pm starting at the Parish Hall
Come share in this reen-
actment of the journey
Mary and Joseph took
through Bethlehem seek-
ing a place to stay.
Children dressed as
Joseph and Mary knock
on the doors of houses
around the parish neighborhood. As the group
processes through the neighborhood a traditional
song is sung. At last, Mary and Joseph are
welcomed and we conclude the evening back at
the parish hall for hot chocolate, bread and several
piñatas! This is a fun family event and everyone is
welcome—dress warmly!
“What should we do?” Today’s Gospel gives a sim-ple challenge: make Jesus the center of our lives. Make how he responded to people the way we respond to peo-ple. Make his fire well up in our hearts so that our baptism with the Holy Spirit conforms us more perfectly to him. Make our an-swer to the question one that leads us to preach to others the same Good News Jesus preached to us. And we must preach the same way he did: not simply with words, but with deeds.

Brothers and Sisters: Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
—Letter of St. Paul to the Philippians 4:4-7
“Faith grows when it is lived as an experience of love received and when it is
communicated as an experience of grace and joy. It makes us fruitful, because it expands our hearts in hope and enables us to bear life-giving witness: indeed, it opens the hearts and minds of those who listen and respond to the Lord’s invitation to adhere to his word and become his disciples.” --Pope Benedict XVI, Porta Fidei Apostolic Letter, 2011

Each night this week pause in gratitude. Whatever the day has brought, no matter how busy it has been, stop, before you fall asleep, to give thanks for the light shining into the dark places of your life that helps you experience God’s mercy and grace.
Kid’s Corner This Sunday has a
special name: Gaudete
Sunday. Gaudete is
the Latin word for
“rejoice.” We remem-
ber today that God is
faithful and that
Jesus will come again
as he promised. On that day, every tear will
be wiped away, and there will be no more
pain and death. Listen closely to today’s
readings and you’ll hear words like “glad,”
“rejoice,” and “joy.”
Go for a walk with your parents around the
neighborhood tonight and enjoy the Christ-
mas lights at the homes of your neighbors.
The lights remind us that Jesus is the Light
of the World. He came to help us see how
we should live according to God’s plan. Like
John the Baptist, Christmas lights proclaim
the Good News of Jesus!

Who can I help today? Here’s a question that can take your family through the rest of Advent. Each morn-ing, as kids are pour-ing cereal and you’re making lunches, ask the question, “Who can you help today?” and see where the discussion leads. One family who started this practice said answers ranged from plans to walk the dog to a child’s prom-ise to pray for world peace. Amanda, the mother, said she loved the effect the daily question had on the family. “It got everyone focused on helping others and less on our own selfish needs.” —At Home with Our Faith
There’s Hope for Us All!
It is sometimes difficult to
understand the appeal of
someone like John the
Baptist. Who would want
to go into the wilderness
to hear some religious
fanatic tell us to repent so
that our sins might be
forgiven?
In our own lives, it is often an extraordinary event or
situation that impels us to see God in a more personal way.
Some of these are happy events, such as getting married or
having a child; some, though are situations that involve
much suffering, such as sickness, unemployment, or the
death of a loved one.
So it is that in today’s Gospel, the people who come to John
the Baptist to seek God are in difficult situations. Both
groups mentioned—tax collectors and soldiers—were de-
spised by their own people, who considered them unredeem-
able sinners. But these are the very ones who come to John
to repent, to be baptized, and to ask how they can live justly.
This, then, is a Gospel of hope: if even dishonest tax collec-
tors and traitorous soldiers may be forgiven and may live
justly, what hope there is for us! What hope for us, even in
the most difficult situations we might encounter. And what
hope for us when we remember that John prepares the way
for the One to come—through whom, with whom, and in
whom we celebrate, in hope, our Eucharist today. —Rev. Armand Mercier, OFM, Living with Christ
