It’s no longer even news. Just turn on your radio or tele- vision, or read the newspaper, and the recent ‘Economic Downturn’ is the big global story these days. With “the economy” being blamed for cut- backs, job losses, diminished buying power and a con- sumer credit crunch, the average North American family is under more and more pressure to make ends meet. For others, it’s even more serious and much closer to home. For them, it’s not about statistics, free trade, wage parity or job sharing: it’s about just getting through each day. Government Social Service bureaus, responsible for such important issues as Welfare, Mothers’ Allowance, Services for the Disabled and the Homeless, do their best with their discretionary funds, on a community level. But these discretionary funds are stretched thin, and can’t be counted on to help everyone in need. It’s the community itself that needs to look after their own. Indeed, some would say that it’s what defines a community in the first place. Anna Hamilton, Chair of the St. Joseph Island and Area Food Bank and Community Kitchens, knows this only too well. “It’s about neighbours helping neighbours. We’re just helping to organize the effort and focus it where it’s most needed.” The Island and the North Shore communities have always been generous in their efforts to provide relief to those in need, especially among the various Church groups in the area. Today’s Food Bank organization grew out of this ‘grass roots’ concern, when the United Church Outreach Committee applied to the local Social Service bureau in Thessalon for funding. The funding was granted in November 2001, and the Food Bank as we know it today, was born. “There is no monopoly on sharing” says Anna. “I can’t begin to tell you about all the tremendous support we receive, both in material and money, from a wide vari- ety of sources. Homesick
There is something magical about theisland that never leaves you no matterhow far you go. When growing up onthe island, in Richards Landing, Iremember spending the long summerdays looking out at the lake, thinking itwas getting boring, and that when Igrew up I was going to move far awayto a big city and never look back. Well,now I guess I am grown up (at leastpartially) and though I am not in a
huge city, it is much larger than theLanding (I hit 5 sets of lights on theway home from work so it must be atleast a little bigger) and still the bestpart of my year is the week vacation Itake to come home.
The very first year I returned homeafter moving away, I brought my hus-band, and as soon as we drove over thebridge we rolled down all the car win-dows. The warm scent of water, treesand sand flooded into our car and Istill can hear him laughing and saying"what’s that good smell?" to which Ireplied "that....is the island".
I work in an office in the legal depart-ment for General Motors now. I am farfrom the water, and far from home butmy office walls are covered in homephotos sent from my mother, no one isable to walk by my desk without com-menting on the beauty of St.JosephIsland. Who would have guessed, afterall these years and all these miles, I stillspend my days looking out at the lake.

That’s their end, notyour end! Evidently the front-line tech-nical support was not informed. Mostcall centre personnel follow a scriptwhen diagnosing customer Internetissues. This requires virtually no techni-cal expertise on the support side andties up frustrated Sympatico customersin a plodding step-by-step session last-ing hours. If you hang up and call backwith the hope of acquiring a more expe-rienced techie, you will be forced intoanswering the same scripted questions.A better option for Sympatico dial-upcustomers is contacting local neigh-bours and friends using the sameSympatico dial-up Internet service.

When ever we think of Las Vegas the thing that comes to mindis the grandeur and glitz of the casinos, stores and theatresthat line “The Strip.” On our recent trip we were able to seeanother side of Vegas away from the lights and sounds ofdowntown.
We were invited to help serve lunch at the Blind Centre ofSouthern Nevada. On this day a meal was prepared and servedby Lions Club members to 40 sight challenged people fromthe area. The centre is a facility that was built by the LionsClubs of Nevada and is operated under the guidance of theWest Charleston Lions Club. The building has a dining areacomplete with kitchen facilities, a dance hall, computer room,craft rooms and exercise areas. The clients are afforded full useof these facilities with scheduled programs and meals madeavailable. They are taken on shopping trips and medical visitin the Centre’s Van. An outside building houses a shop werethe cleaning and recycling of eye glasses is started before beingsent out for distribution. All programs and events are suppliedfree of charge to the clients and are financed through the sup-port of Lions Clubs in Nevada and fund raising endeavors.

Is one life lost worth the $200,000 saving?It is our understanding that a consulting company hired bySault Area Hospital (SAH) to address the current outstand-ing deficit of over $13 million will submit their finishedreport to the SAH Board sometime in early 2009.
We have been informed that a recommendation to reducethe hours of emergency room service at Matthews MemorialHospital (MMH) may be made.
This possibility is of grave concern to our organization. It isour view that the 24-hour emergency care presently provid-ed at the MMH site is the minimum standard acceptable toresidents of this area.
MMH serves communities on the North Shore from EchoBay to Bruce Mines and all of St. Joseph Island. The tax-paying residents of these ten townships in ruralNortheastern Ontario will not accept the elimination ofemergency room services, the reduction in communityhealth care services, and risk of lives lost. Is one life lostworth the $200,000 annual saving this elimination of servicewill provide for the SAH budget?

A old fashioned lady, always quite delicate and elegant, especially in her language, was planning a weeks holiday inon the Island with her husband, so she wrote to a particular
camping ground and asked for a reservation.She wanted to make sure that the camping ground was fullyequipped, but didn't know quite how to ask about the toilet
facilities. She just couldn't bring herself to write the word “toilet” in her letter. After much thought, she finally came upwith the old fashioned term "Bathroom closet" but when shewrote it down, she still thought she was being too forward,
so she started all over again, rewrote the letter, and referredto the bathroom closet as the B.C.
“Does the camping ground have it's own B.C.” is what she wrote.
Well, the camping ground owner wasn't a bit old fashioned,and he just couldn't figure out what the old lady was talkingabout, so he showed the letter around a few of the campersand the only thing they could come up with was that B.C.stood for Baptist Church, so he wrote the following reply.
Dear Madam,I regret very much the delay in answering your letter, but I
now take the pleasure of informing you that a B.C. is locatednine miles north of our camping ground, and is capable ofseating 250 people at one time.
I admit that it is quite a distance away if you are in thehabit of going regularly but no doubt you will be pleased toknow that a great number of campers go there and manytake their lunches along and make a day of it. They usuallyarrive nice and early and stay quite late.
The last time my wife and I went was six years ago, and itwas so crowded we had to stand up the whole time we werethere. It may interest you to know that there is a special supper planned there to raise money to buy more seats sothat everyone will be able to sit in comfort.
I would like to say that it pains me very much not to beable to go more regularly, but it is surely no lack of desire onmy part, just that I am so busy most of the time.
As we grow older, it seems to be more of an effort to go,especially in the cold weather. If you decide to come down toour camping ground perhaps I could go with you the firsttime you go, sit with you and introduce you to all the otherfolks.
Remember this is a very friendly community.

addition, organizations and churches have been especiallysupportive. The Anglican Parishes of St. Joseph and St.George, for example, have held a number of very successfulfood drives. For the past 3 years, the Northern Credit Unionbranch in Richards Landing have been fantastic boosters,through their “pennies” programme. Sally Hooke andJocelyn Township have been outstanding in their sup-port, through the ‘Jocelyn Mall’s’ contributions”.
“We do receive some funding from the ServiceBureau, but most of our support and helpcomes from the community. All these won-derful people and organizations aretruly a blessing”.
Anna and her team of fellow dedicat-ed volunteers co-ordinate two principalprogrammes:
The Food Bank is open Wednesdays, from1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, at Harmony St.Mark’s United Church in RichardsLanding. The number of families usingthis service varies widely: “We’ve had up to 21 families,which represented 70 people …approximately half of themchildren”!
On average, the Food Bank helps 10 to 12 families per week.Each family receives a standard shopping bag of food, withno questions asked. Presently the Food Bank must limit itshelp to two visits a month per family. In Anna’s words, “We’redoing the best we can with what we’ve got. We’d like to domore, because the need is for more”.
The second initiative is ‘Community Kitchens’, a uniqueprogramme of ‘shared cooking’, through which participantspay a nominal fee to prepare meals together, which are then
shared amongst the participants, who then take the mealshome. The food, cooking utensils and facilities are pro-
vided for their use.
There are presently 2 ‘Community Kitchens’operating in the area. “It’s a wonderfulway to ensure quality, healthy meals,plus it gives participants the benefit ofhaving others with whom to socialize”.
The Food Bank and CommunityKitchens have come a long way in thepast 8 years, and sadly, there’s still along way yet to go.
So tonight, when you sit down at your din-ner table, don’t just count your blessings….. share them!

Jean Dell Tuominen1941 – 2009Island residents will be sad-dened to hear of the recentpassing of Jean Tuominen,in Vernon BC, on Januarythe 19th from cancer.Jean was Librarian inRichards Landing for a num-ber of years, circa 1980,prior to moving out west.She was predeceased byher husband Taisto in 1983and her daughter Penny in2008. She is survived by hergrandson, Connor and multi-tude of friends.In the words of her goodfriend Maridel Crawford-Brown (formerly from St.Joe) of Vernon, BC, “Jeanwas a warm, gracious, car-ing, dignified person wholoved life and always sawthe best in people”. She hada passion for nature, ani-mals, music, fishing and theout-of-doors”. The world willbe a poorer place withouther.”A Celebration of Jeanʼs lifewas held at Mountain ViewChapel, Armstrong, onJanuary 28th.
