Music in Worship: October 8, 2017, Thanksgiving Sunday Introit: Let their celestial concerts all unite, from SamsonGeorge Frideric Handel (1685-1759)Let their celestial concerts all unite. Ever to sound His praise in endless blaze of light.

–libretto by Newburgh Hamilton (1743)

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

–Psalm 19: 2-7 (1-6 KJV)

About this morning’s organ and choral music...According to J. N. Forkel, Bach’s posthumous biographer, J. S. Bach (1685-1750) wrote his six organ trio sonatas, BWV 525-530, as teaching pieces for his sons Wilhelm Friedemann and Philipp Emmanuel. The works require an unprecedented level of independence of the performer’s two hands and feet; as in a regular chamber-music trio, there are three completely independent melodic lines for the organist to execute elegantly. Nearly 300 years after their composition, Bach’s sonatas remain a standard measure of any organist’s mastery of the craft. Saxon-born George Frideric Handel led a high-profile pan-European career that included important posts in Germany, Italy and England. Samson is a sacred oratorio (a non-staged musical dramatization of a biblical story) written shortly after the more-famous 1741 Messiah.

Page 4: AP bulletins FINAL Bulletins 30/09/2011 16:58 Page 6 The ...

Let their celestial concerts is the finale of the work, sung immediately following the death of Samson, when the crowd celebrates Samson’s final act of redemption and revenge, the toppling of the Philistine temple. Likewise of Saxon origin, Heinrich Schütz studied with both Giovanni Gabrieli and Claudio Monteverdi, mastering the Venetian polychoral style and becoming the most important German composer of the 17th century. Schütz lived through the devastation of the Thirty Years’ War (1618-48); Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes was published as part of op. 11 in 1648, and shows the composer at the height of his powers. In Schütz’s able hands, the motet’s five voices imply the presence of several different choirs singing now in unison, now in harmony, now in dialogue—a perfect musical metaphor of the heavens’ adoration of God. Vincent Lübeck (1654-1740) was a late exponent of the great North German organ school exemplified by Bach’s mentor and example, Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707). He was organist of the famous Schnitger organs in Stade before landing the organist’s post at St. Nikolai in Lübeck (1702-40), then home to one of the world’s largest organs. The Präludium in E is probably the most joyous piece in the North German repertoire, and follows the genre’s typical multi-sectional structure, alternating free, rhapsodic sections with more strict, fugal ones. –JO

Next in music at St. Andrew and St. PaulMeet the Choir Month continues this morning, with the Alto section (including mezzo-sopranos, contraltos and counter-tenors) greeting the congregation in the narthex after the service. The alto is a contradiction of sorts, because an alto vocal line lies within a choral texture, yet the term “alto” is derived from the Latin word “altus”, which means “high”. You may be surprised to learn that there are both female AND male altos; the choir at Saint Andrew and Saint Paul has both! We are delighted to sing together in an unusual configuration, men along with women, adding warmth, brilliance of tone, and depth of harmony to the choral soundscape!

On Saturday, October 21 at 7:00 p.m. a small ensemble from our Choir joins with the musicians of Serenata St. John in an Hommage to Martin Luther, celebrating the unity of Roman Catholics, Lutherans and Presbyterians 500 years after the Protestant Reformation. Featured works include Magnificat à 6 (Monteverdi), J.S. Bach’s Cantata 80 and other masterworks of Luther’s time. Guests of honour include Archbishop Christian Lépine, Mayor Denis Coderre, Maestro Kent Nagano, the Rev. Dr. Glenn Chestnutt and others. The service takes place at the sumptuous

Église St-Nom-de-Jésus, 4215 rue Adam, near Métro Pie-IX. A freewill donation is requested. For more information, please visit www.rrc2017.ca.

On Tuesday, October 31 at 7:30 p.m., in honour of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, the Choir of the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul joins the musicians of Serenata St. John to present Bach’s Magnficat, BWV 243 under the direction of Jean-Sébastien Vallée, within a service of solemn vespers. The liturgy will be led by the Rev. Dr. Glenn Chestnutt, with the participation of guest Roman Catholic, Lutheran and Anglican clergy. Under the ecumenical Reformation/Reconciliation banner (uniting Roman Catholics, Lutherans and Presbyterians), and within the international “500 Years Reformation” conference hosted by McGill University’s Faculty of Religious Studies, this promises to be an evening of great beauty and historic significance. A freewill donation is requested.

The Home Baking table is amazingly popular and offers a wide array of treats. Cakes, pies, cookies, and loaves of all types are great sellers. The Fall Fair is fast approaching and we would appreciate having many different items to sell. Our loyal customers will be shopping ahead of time for the festive Christmas season. We would ask you to label and include complete ingredient lists for those with food sensitivities (such as nuts, eggs, soy, milk, gluten) and special dietary restrictions (such as low-fat or sugar restrictions). Your baked goods may be brought to the Church on the Thursday or Friday before the Fall Fair. However, if you wish to bake in advance, please wrap and label your baked gifts, and we will store them with care in the freezer. All proceeds go to the many charities and projects supported by the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul. We thank you for all your help and support.
