AP Chemistry Summer Packet Mrs. Jennifer Nester Griffin [email protected] feel free to email me with questions over the summer.
Welcome to AP Chemistry! The AP curriculum includes all of the topics and the labs that we need to complete before the 2016 AP test on Monday, May 2nd. There is a lot to cover and while we can do it we will all need to work very hard. You should expect this class to be SIGNIFICANTLY more difficult that your first chemistry class. You need to make sure you are staying up with all assignments, and coming in for help if you need extra help.
We need to use our class time effectively so the goal of this summer packet is that you will have reviewed much of the material from your first chemistry class. We will not just review material from before.
Summer Packet: All work should be done neatly and clearly on paper and organized in the order it was assigned. All work for every problem including units throughout is necessary for AP. This is an expectation on the AP exam in the spring and we want to get into the good habit early.
Please do not procrastinate! Pace yourself over the summer.
Common Ions and Their Charges Part 1: This part of the summer assignment for AP Chemistry is quite simple (but not easy). You need to master the formulas, charges, and names of the common ions. If you know me I am not a big memorization person however this is a vital part of AP Chemistry. They will not give you an ion chart so it is essential that you have this done prior to school beginning. I suggest note cards and lots of practice. On the first day of the school year, you will be given a quiz on these ions. You will be asked to: • Write the names of these ions when given the formula and charge • Write the formula and charge when given the names
Significant Figures
Part 2: Unless you have been exposed to significant figure rules in another course, this topic will take a bit of study. I have attached a two-sided page with explanations of the rules, and examples of problem solving in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. • There is also a page of problems for you to complete.
Scientific Notation
Part 3: Read and complete the practice on scientific notation.
Naming Compounds Part 4: Read and complete the practice on naming compounds and writing formulas.
Chapters 1 through 3 Practices Part 5: Each chapter has review problems that need to be completed. There will be a test on Chapters 1-3 the first week of school. This should all be a review from Honors Chemistry.
