Four years ago, the Associated Press and others in the press

suggested it was in poor taste for Republicans to spend $40 million

on President Bush’s inauguration. AP writer Will Lester calculated

e impact that kind of money would have on armoring Humvees in Iraq, helping

ctims of the tsunami, or paying down the deficit. Lester thought the party should

cancelled: “The questions have come from Bush supporters and

So you're attending an inaugural ball saluting the historic election of Barack Obama in the worst economic

climate in three generations. Can you get away with glitzing it up and still be appropriate, not to mention

comfortable and financially viable?

To quote the man of the hour: Yes, you can. Veteran ballgoers say you should. And fashionistas insist that you

must.

"This is a time to celebrate. This is a great moment. Do not dress down. Do not wear the Washington uniform,"

said Tim Gunn, a native Washingtonian and Chief Creative Officer at Liz Claiborne, Inc.

"Just because the economy is in a downturn, it doesn't mean that style is going to be in a downturn," agreed Ken

Downing, fashion director for Neiman Marcus.

And if anyone does raise an eyebrow at those sequins, remind them that optimism is good for times like these.

"Just say you're doing it to help the economy," chuckled good manners guru Letitia Baldridge.

o get a real feel for the contrast, here’s an excerpt of Lester’s January 13, 2005 piece (as recounted in the MRC’s

yberAlert), starting with a lede designed to rain all over Bush’s parade and including the suggestion from two liberal

emocrats that Bush eat cold chicken salad and pound cake instead:

President Bush’s second inauguration will cost tens of millions of dollars — $40 million alone in private

donations for the balls, parade and other invitation-only parties. With that kind of money, what could you buy?

200 armored Humvees with the best armor for troops in Iraq.

Vaccinations and preventive health care for 22 million children in regions devastated by the tsunami.

A down payment on the nation’s deficit, which hit a record-breaking $412 billion last year....

The questions have come from Bush supporters and opponents: Do we need to spend this money on what

seems so extravagant?

New York Rep. Anthony Weiner, a Democrat, suggested inaugural parties should be scaled back, citing as a

precedent Roosevelt's inauguration during World War II.

"President Roosevelt held his 1945 inaugural at the White House, making a short speech and serving guests

cold chicken salad and plain pound cake," according to a letter from Weiner and Rep. Jim McDermott, D-

Wash. "During World War I, President Wilson did not have any parties at his 1917 inaugural, saying that such

festivities would be undignified."...

Billionaire Mark Cuban, owner of the National Basketball Association's Dallas Mavericks, voted for Bush --

twice. Cuban knows a thing or two about big spending, once starring in ABC's reality TV show, "The

Benefactor," in which 16 contenders tried to pass his test for success and win $1 million.

"As a country, we face huge deficits. We face a declining economy. We have service people dying. We face

responsibilities to help those suffering from the...devastation of the tsunamis," he wrote on his blog, a Web

journal.

Cuban challenged Bush to set an example: "Start by canceling your inauguration parties and festivities."

bviously, that’s not the media’s message to Barack Obama this year. And no one in the press is going to argue that, with

e nation at war, the new President should be satisfied with cold chicken salad and pound cake.

Yeah, I'm betting the AP January 15, 2009 - 01:12 ET by Coldsnap

Yeah, I'm betting the AP would like a 4 year dump of all their stories about now. Nothing like jeering one guy and then in a WORSE economy cheering on another to show your true colors as a'trusted' news source.

Honestly, at this point, where can I just get some 'news?' Just the facts, none of the pitch (or at least

equal words for each side)?

We MUST stop this man before he does this again!

Federal Emergency!January 14, 2009 - 14:17 ET by CobraMan

President Bush has declared DC a federal emergency area!

"President Bush on Tuesday declared the District a federal emergency area, clearing the way for the cityto receive federal money to help cover the overwhelming cost of providing security for officialinauguration events.

Officials said it was the first time the designation had ever been used for anything other than a nationaldisaster, such as a hurricane or widespread flooding." Source

I wonder how the Liberals would have reacted if President Bush did the same thing for his 2005 Inauguration?

is the Associated Press once again tsk-tsking the high collar cost? Nope.

Ah but it was in full Associated Parsimony mode during September/October 2008.

Remember the snit the AP was in till election day? That was after the RNC kitted out VP candidate Sarah Palin with arented wardrobe, which AP "alleged" cost $150 million. Or something really high.

Oh sorry -- that's the cost for Obama to spend two minutes outside getting inaugurated. And there's no refund, unlikePalin's wardrobe.

Well Blonde.. I fear that might send the wrong message from NB's. With so many folks on both sides of theisle being so solidly on-record with the heart felt view that this is the Obama's moment - a moment that the American people, by and large, are optimistic about, and that they receive the support and best wishes of all the people, and an honest desire that Obama does well for the country; I suspect that using theoccasion of the seating of the next president of the US as a spring board for goodness knows what bizarreoutfits might find their place onto the boards of such a respectably fair and balanced site as is NB, would

not be in the spirit of.. oh, what am I saying - well , unless we limit it the WalMart clothes line; being thatMichelle only just this past year resigned her year's long well paid stint on the board of directors of thecountries largest pickle company, TreeHouse Foods, with an impressive growth rate, complements of thedearly loved by the leftists favorite shopping place, WalMart Corporation. $45 million?January 14, 2009 - 16:03 ET by SickofLibs

Eliot Spitzer spent more than that on whores in just 18 months.

How about $5 million for a stage for a one-hour acceptance speech? Or Clinton spending $42 million way back in1997?

But Bush, of course, was completely wrong to spend $40 million eight years later. No double standard at all.

You can't put a price tag on history. Let's party like it's 1861!

January 14, 2009 - 23:42 ET by Teachum

Proof positive that Obama is a ‘doorman’ for the Clintonistas’ , which is too good for Barack –he should be parking theircars too!

Guess I ’ m just ahead of the learning curve here. Stopped paying taxes the day after Obongo was elected.

Closed old addresses –no forwarding , opened new ones and got off of the tax rolls.

What? You really w ant t o pay these ignorant dolts? Don ’ t ask –don ’ t t ell! :)

I'm a Liar myself, butJanuary 15, 2009 - 00:26 ET by NCMike

We all root for our home team. We boo the opposition. We cheer our team, oftentimes even when they don't deserveit. We put "I'm the proud parent of a wonderful kid" stickers on our bumpers, even though we don't believe it. We tellour wives they look gorgeous, even those times they don't. But the reality is that we KNOW when we're lying. Weknow when we're trying to delude others, but we never actually believe ourselves. Unless of course, we're liberals, orsecular progressives, or Democrats, or academia, or Hollywood, or the media. In those cases we apparently seem tobelieve every line of crap that is self-contradictory, illogical, doesn't square with experience or even reality. It's calledintellectual dishonesty. It's propelled by self-centered, feel good goals, and if each of these folks were to look behind thecurtain at what's driving those self-deluded, intellectually dishonest actions, they'd see Lucifer pulling the strings, whispering in ears, and goading each to an end that is so obviously (to those who listen, watch, analyze and think) eviland self destructive.

2nd InnagurationJanuary 15, 2009 - 09:49 ET by HeaterMan

Hey guys - let's not forget this was Bush's SECOND INNAGURATION. I'm against spending $400,000 let alone $40million of taxpayer money on a party in which a politician congratulates himself. But what p1ssed me off so much about

Bush in 2005 is was the guy already had a huge party in 2001.

Sorry -- just calling it like I see it.

Sorry -- just calling it like I see it .

Ya gotta open your eyes first. The money was from private donations.

President Bush’ s second inauguration will cost tens of millions of dollars — $40 million alone in private donations

So teh next big aniversary, birthday, Christams or any other celebration you must just let it pass without thoughtbecause like you said "let's not forget this was Bush's SECOND INNAGURATION" and in that vien anything done tehsecond time muchless subsequent is no big deal.

Exactly, Dan. I guess theJanuary 16, 2009 - 17:32 ET by thebutlerdidit

Exactly, Dan. I guess the fact the man managed to get re-elected was a good reason not to have any fussover an inauguration. He had just been through 4 yrs. of hell, and then had to go through another presidentialcampaign. In my opinion, if you get re-elected, then it should be bigger than the first inauguration. It is anamazing accomplishment, less than 40 people have ever done it in this country, the fact you can get electedTWICE, is especially amazing. I think all Presidents deserve their due, I don't have a problem with Obamagetting a large inauguration, but you have to admit, this deal, with 23 musical groups, the whole re-enactmentof Lincoln, the press acting like the 2nd coming is happening, the press swooning like he is God, you don't think this is ridiculous?????

a few quick points heaterJanuary 15, 2009 - 14:59 ET by candance

1) Unless you can point to archives of you disapproving of Obama's elaborate spending, this all sounds a bit "toolittle too late."

2) Unless you can prove that Clinton spent less than that on his event in 97 your point is moot.

I'm a typical white person.
