Objective:Youareexpectedtocreate6HIGHquality,well-thoughtoutpiecesofcompletedartwork throughout the summer and keep a sketchbook to document the progress andconceptsbehindyourartwork. Thefollowingpageshaveavastselectionofsummerassignmentsforyoutochoosefrom.AsanAPstudioartist,youareexpectedtosubmit6qualityartworksthatcanbecomparabletoartwork produced during the course of the year. Your summer assignment involves a timecommitment of about 7-8 hours a week. They are vital to the development of your APPortfolio. ItwilladdtotherequiredAPsections:Quality,Concentration,&Breadth. SUMMER ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS:

YouaretocompleteatleastSIXofthefollowingassignmentsoverthesummerfordrawing,or2DDrawingPortfolio–includesworkdoneinPencil,charcoal,marker,ink,colorpencilandanypaintonflatsurfaces2DPortfolio-includesallofaboveAND:photography,collage,andlowreliefMaterials:Youwillberesponsibleforprovidingyourownmaterials.IrecommendSamFlaxArtsupplyandArtSystems.Bothwillgiveyouagenerousstudentdiscount.AdditionallyyoumayordermaterialsonlinefromAmazon,BlickArtSupplyorNascoArtSupply.

REQUIRED MATERIALS: You need to purchase a medium size tackle box from Walmart (Art stores sell similar boxes but they are overpriced) – Purchase as needed… I will provide many materials during the school year but it is very important you use good quality materials during the summer- get the materials AS YOU NEED THEM.

o 6 good quality brushes for watercolor o 6 good quality brushes for oil and acrylic o Set of acrylic paints (8-12 colors) 4oz tubes o Set of Watercolors – tube or pan o Pint of Gesso o 4 -8 oz Gel medium o Charcoal pencil set (extra soft, soft, and white) o Kneaded eraser o Magic Rub or White eraser o Drawing Pencil minimum set includes 2b, 6b and ebony pencil o Masking tape or artist tape o Set of 24 color pencils (Prisma-color brand is nice and relatively affordable) o Bristol board 10 pages – no larger than 18 x 24 no smaller than 14 x 16 o Canvas board 3-5 -– no larger than 18 x 24 no smaller than 11 x 14 o Waterproof Black ink pens set of .01, .03, .05

DRAWING PORTFOLIO- drawing portfolios primary concentrate on MARK MAKING on flat surfaces. – use these ideas as starting points but others can be done…key words in bold

1. Doadrawingofafuturisticorrealisticcityscape.i.e.,Dallasintheyear2050(keepinmindrulesofone,two,andthree-pointperspective).

2. Doaportrait,self-portrait,still-life,orlandscapeusingeitheracomplimentary,analogous,or

split-complimentarycolorscheme(youmayuseblackandwhiteaswellasshadesandtintsofthechosenhues).

3. Doacloseupofasubjectworkfromaphoto–createtheentirepieceinmonochromaticblack

whiteandgreyandtakeonepart(4x6)anddoacolordetailofthepiece.–openmedium

4. Dosomeexplorationwithmixedmedia.Doapiece(portrait,self-portrait,landscapeorstill-life)in

whichyouuseatleastthreedifferentmediumi.e.,awetmedium,adrymediumandsomecollageelement.

5. Dographitedrawingofastill-lifearrangementthatconsistsofreflectiveobjectsyourhome.Yourgoalistoconveyaconvincingrepresentationwithafullrangeofvalues.Toaddinteresttothecomposition,youmightalsowanttorenderyourselfbeingreflectedintheobjects.

6. StilllifefromUniquePointofview:Createastilllifearrangementofobjectsandcreateacloseupofthecompositioneitherfromaboveorbelow.Photosmaybeusedtoassistinthedrawingofthecomposition.

7. Createadrawingofanunusualinteriorforinstance,lookinginsideacloset,cabinet,refrigerator,

insideyourcar…useyourimagination!

8. Doadrawingofyourhandsinavarietyofposes.Youmustcarefullyplanyourcompositionin

orderfortheseparateunitstoworktogethervisually

9. Doacolor-renderingofastilllifearrangementconsistingofyourfamilymember’sShoestrytoconveysome“sense”ofeachofyourindividualfamilymember’sdistinctpersonalitiesinyourpiece.-trythisasamixedmediapiece!

10. Doadrawingofyourworldlytreasuresarrangedinaninterestingstill-lifecomposition.11. Createaself-portraitthatmimicsafamousportrait.

Evaluateallworkthatisintendedforthefinalportfolioandcarefullyconsidertheinclusionofanypiecescompletedpriortothecourseorcompletedoutsidetheinstructionofferedinthiscourse.2D Design PORTFOLIO – all assignments are open medium. 2-D may incorporate digital media, mixed media, collage and photograph where Drawing Portfolio cannot. Use these projects as starting points but others can be done.

1. Metamorphosis–openmediumseriesofworksthatbeginwithrepresentationalinterpretationsandevolveintoabstraction.

2. Anexplorationofpatternsanddesignsfoundinnatureand/orculture.

3. Aseriesoflandscapesbaseduponpersonalexperienceofaparticularplaceinwhichcompositionandlightareusedtointensifyartisticexpression.

4. Developmentofaseriesofidentityproductsdesign(logo,letterhead,signage,etc.)forimaginary

businesses.5. Abstractionsdevelopedfromcellsandothermicroscopicimages

.6. Interpretiveportraitureorfigurestudiesthatemphasizedramaticcompositionorabstraction.

7. Aseriesoffabricdesigns,appareldesigns,orweavingsusedtoexpressparticularthemes.
