First major survey in 1828

The river was navigable year round at 6.5' depths from Apalachicola Bay to the town of Aspalaga and 75% of the year, for boats with a 3.5' depth, to confluence of Chattahoochee and above to Columbus.

Historical Dredging 1900- 1940’s: Most work done at the “new

channel” at Moccasin/River Styx and Cutoff/Lee Slough/Lower Chipola and Blountstown

1948: Revised Modern Navigation Channel approved

1956: Cut-offs on Apalachicola River conducted

1958: rock shoals opened in upper river, more removed in 1963, 1968

Historical Dredging 1969 - 1970: Phase I-III of Navigation

Channel completed 1979: first COE dredging permit issued by

Florida with conditions 1986: Navigation Maintenance Plan

completed 1999: DEP permit required monitoring for T&E

mussels, many DA’s not allowed 2005: Florida denial of COE permit

Habitat Mapping

GFC (FWC) conducted bank habitat mapping for the entire River in 1984 COE, as part of permit condition,

remapped river in 2002 and digitized GFC 1984 effort USGS digitized banklines as part of

Apalachicola project
