We had some in-depth reporting on the achievements of our Year 7 and 8 students where we looked into progress and discussed methods of improving student outcomes. One area which showed up in the data which parents and caregivers can assist the College with is students not being in school on regular occasions - there is a clear and strong correlation between being at school and improving education. This catching up is where we really need parental support to ensure all our students get the best chance for success. BOT Update

A BIG Thank You to the Treemendous day volunteers, the weather was on our side and a

great team worked really well so thank you for your efforts. The students certainly got a

good education on bugs, sharks and the environment.

The people that are involved in the Mazda Foundation and Project Crimson really seemed

to enjoy our Southern Hospitality and were wonderful to work with. Morning tea and

lunch was great (fantastic soup and yummy cheese rolls), so again thank you to all those

that made for such a neat community event.

At our last meeting the board went through our strategic aims, writing focus, curriculum

review, raising aspirations and community engagement with updates alongside our

operational plan and targets. We had some in-depth reporting on the achievements of our

Year 7 and 8 students where we looked into progress and discussed methods of improving

student outcomes.

One area which showed up in the data which parents and caregivers can assist the College

with is students not being in school on regular occasions - there is a clear and strong

correlation between being at school and improving education. Understandably there are

valid reasons why students need to be off school some days, but this means they often need

to catch up on missed lessons. This catching up is where we really need parental support to

ensure all our students get the best chance for success.

The board is developing a reporting template for all age groups at a mid-year point to

report against targets, show overall progress, identify priority learners and strategies to

assist in advancing achievement to the end of the school year. This will also detail what is

working well and what we can be better at.

We have signed off last years audited accounts which showed a much-improved working

capital for the school but a book loss with depreciation and the maintenance plan in, it’s

fair to say running a school in this day and age is challenging.

Aparima Matters

August 2019

ERO completed its review with a two day visit to the school and we expect a final draft

report this week.

New trustees Sarah Wilson and Michael Berkers attended a governance essentials course

and a student representative election process is underway for September.

Policy reviews were made on 5 board policy areas as part of our schedule, some are

reviewed annually while others are on a 3-year schedule. We also made an alteration to

the Education outside the classroom procedure (EOTC) to allow board approval between

meetings should a sudden opportunity arise for a student/students which was unforeseen as

we don’t want any of our students to miss out on extending their cultural, sporting or

academic achievements.

As always, the board welcomes your thoughts and values your views on how we can

improve our school.

Kind regards

Leon Black

Congratulations Well done to Caleb and Nikita Diprose for participating

in the Year 7/8 Western Cluster Speech Competition at

Takitimu Primary last week, with big congratulations to

Nikita for coming 3rd. Awesome !!!

Bugman & Shark Man come to Aparima College Do you want to help save the planet?

Well Bugman and Shark Man have the answers.

Ruud Kleinpaste and Riley Elliot visited Aparima College, talked about the environment and

to follow your passion.

Bugman was all about bugs. He had so many bugs to show us all. He asked for an assistant

and one of my friends got chosen. He had this weta her name was Dorothy. Dorothy got put

on my friends face and she freaked out but were supposed to be quiet.

Sharman was all about sharks and saving the planet. He didn’t bring any sharks (obviously)

but he was saying stuff about saving the planet, and if we save the planet, we can save the

sharks, turtles, fish and so much more. He said that climate change was one of the biggest

problems in this earth, so he wanted to change that. He also said that whenever he can go, he

will go for a dive and swim with sharks. He learnt their body language and is friends with

most sharks.

Festival for the Future Being the change, such a broad statement that was brought to life in a life changing

experience for myself and all those who attended the New Zealand wide conference,

Festival for the Future. I was fortunate enough to be one of two people selected to

represent the Southland District Council at such an incredible event where no

conversation was too tough. Being immersed in a space with politicians, businessmen,

activists, television stars, para-athletes, musicians and more was an experience where I

am grateful to have had the opportunity to personally speak to many of those people.

With over 1200 attendees the festival was a major networking event, where big issues

were addressed and actions for change were discussed. I learnt that the problems are not

climate change, water quality, loss of biodiversity, discrimination, wellbeing, the problem

is us.

People are the problem however we are

also the solution. Understanding that if

everyone defied the status quo to create

collective actions against our issues we

can solve them! We cannot solve our

issues with the structures and systems

that created them in the first place,

change must occur. Do not be more

upset about people suggesting the

problem exists, be upset about the

actual problem. These lessons have

changed my perspective and have

challenged me to implement them

within my hometown. Please join me in

creating a more inclusive community

with collective actions.

Stay tuned for more from me!

Year 7/8 Girls Futsal We have games on Monday afternoons

and practice on Wednesday lunchtimes.

We lost our first game but we are

getting better.

My favourite part about futsal is

playing with friends and having a good

coach to drive us to the game and our

other coach to support us.

2019 Outdoor Recreation Snow Camp On Monday 19 August, the Outdoor Recreation Class of 2019 departed from Aparima

College at the prime time of 5:30am. We hit the road towards Coronet Peak, Queenstown.

We got up there at around 8:30 and headed straight for the slopes, morale was high!

Each day everyone was split into two groups and enjoyed a lesson, developing radical

snowboarding skills. Then everyone spent the day exploring the vast mountain and differing

terrain. On Tuesday morning there was 23 whole cm of snow ready for us to shred. We had

three bluebird days which provided us great conditions for boarding.

We stayed in the Southland Ski Club with an amazing host where we enjoyed many intense

games of chess and great banter as well as outstanding food.

Overall, we had a great time and will definitely be hitting the slopes again.

Toast Hi everyone! We have something new for you, you may remember us as

the guys who had a sorry attempt at T Plates. After many meetings and

discussions, we have decided to change from our product to something

completely different.

You may have seen our Facebook page, Riverton Surplus, if not feel free to go and give it a

like. On our page you will likely see our group as well. This group is our service, we plan

that people will be able to use this group to offer up their surplus time, skills and resources.

We currently have just over 20 members but for this group to work we need much more so

please go join! The group is called “Riverton Surplus Group”. We try our best to get

ourselves in amongst the community doing our part to reduce our carbon footprint, recently

we had our team at the tree-mendous school makeover planting trees for our new outdoor

learning area here at school. Also, we are going to be selling seeds through wildflower

world which are a business in Tauranga who are helping out the young enterprise groups of

New Zealand, an order form is available from our Facebook page or a hard copy can be

attained from the office.

Share the Love Is a Year 13 YES company that specialises in running

events to raise awareness and funds for NZ Cancer charities.

Last term we ran two successful events linked to Breast

Cancer and Bowel Cancer.

We would like to thank you again for all the support we received from the community for

these events. Our target market is young people, particularly Aparima students, and we have

designed our events to be attractive and informative to them. This term we held a Skin

Cancer fundraising event to remind students of the dangers of too much sun exposure. As

September is linked to Prostate Cancer, we will be running an event on the 20th September

to raise awareness of this cancer charity.

Please check out the August edition of the Advocate as

Aparima have a few articles you must check out. Go

Beach Clean Up Electives on Wednesday 11 September we are registered to do a Clean up around

Riverton. A WasteNet representative will be coming out to Riverton to help organise a

waste audit. The Clean up organisers nationwide have encouraged communities to use

their own recycled materials to collect waste in, instead of sending out yet more plastic

gloves and plastic bags. If you have spare bread bags, please drop them into the Office

before the Clean up. Students should dress for the weather and bring a pair of gardening

gloves to wear, if possible. We are also collecting the tags from bread bags and wine

bottle tops to give to charities.

2019 Practice Exam Timetable

Exams are being held in Week 8 Mon – Wed. There is no Study Leave in 2019. Our

expectation is that you attend school outside the hours of your exams. All exams will be in

the Hall. You need to be at the Hall 10-15 mins before your exam. THERE WILL BE

NO LATE ENTRY TO EXAMS: Turning up late to your exam will result in you

being awarded a Not Achieved grade

NCEA exam preparation, help with

understanding the material, or need a way to get

While gaining my qualification at Massey

University in Math and Physics, I tutored students
