Why is Safety important?Life is valuable. Which is why as humans, we do everything to protect it and keep our lives safe against any untoward incidents or accidents that may lead to injury or even death. The importance of safety in all aspects of our lives is quite obviousTo avoid accidents

To stay healthy

To live a long life

Safety Measures at Work.Understand the risks.Once you know the particular hazards of your job or workplace, you can take steps to reduce your risk of work-related injury or illnessReduce workplace stress.Common causes include long hours, heavy workload, job insecurity and conflicts with coworkers or bosses. Stress can lead to depression, sleeping difficulties and problems with concentration.Take regular breaks.Staying fresh and alert will help you avoid injury or burnout. Schedule the most difficult tasks of each day for times when your concentration is best, such as first thing in the morning.Avoid stooping or twisting.Use ergonomically designed furniture and equipment, and rearrange your work area so that everything you need is within easy reach.

Protect your back.If you do need to pick up and carry heavy loads, keep the load close to your body and lift with your thigh muscles.

Wear protective equipment to suit the task.If worn correctly, gear such as earplugs, earmuffs, hard hat, safety goggles, gloves or full-face mask can dramatically reduce your risk of injury.

Stay sober.Alcohol and drugs are a contributing factor in around three per cent of workplace fatalities.Talk over any concerns.Your employer or human resources manager need to be informed about hazards and risks. Your employer is legally obliged to ensure a safe working environment.

Working Safely

33This presentation is designed to assist team leaders, supervisors and trainers explain and reinforce to supported employees within the organisation why working safely is important and how the organisation and they can ensure they work safely. The accompanying Trainers Guide contains tips on different ways to use this presentation to maximise relevance and impact for participants. As a trainer your aim should be to ensure examples, pictures and graphics are relevant to the participants workplace and work activities. While the presentation is designed for use with employees with an intellectual disability, it can be used with any supported employees in a business service. Why is working safelyimportant?

34In developing the resource we have attempted to ensure that the OH&S core competencies covered in most wage assessment tools including the Business Services Wage Assessment Tool have been addressed. The questions that people with a disability must answer in relation to OH&S include:identifying and using protective clothing or equipment appropriatelycarrying out basic safety checks on equipment prior to operationsetting up and organising the work station in accordance with OH&S standardsfollowing safety instructionsperforming manual handling tasks to recommended safety practicedisposing of waste safety in accordance with the requirements of the workplace and OH&S standardsknowing what to do if they or someone else hurts themselves at workknowing the importance of using/wearing protective clothing or equipmentknowing what a hazard istaking appropriate action when they notice something is unsafe at worktaking appropriate action if the fire alarm goes offknowing why it is important to follow evacuation proceduresusing appropriate methods to move objects in the workplace. What are our safety rules?Follow safety instructionsWash your handsWear Personal Protective Equipment

35Ask participants for some examples of the safety rules in their work area Note: You need to click the mouse to bring each example up on the slide.Typical examples of safety rules could be:staying on designated walkwaysobserving the hygiene signswearing protective clothingIf necessary, explain the term PPE and provide examples this is also covered in a later slide

Why is working safely important?People dont get hurt

36An activity could be to select a couple of relevant safety rules and discuss why they are rules. For example, what might happen if people in the kitchen didnt wash their hands regularly?Orwhat might happen if we didnt have designated walkways?Reiterate the message on the slide about people not getting hurt.Using examples is always useful in training activities however it is important to make the example as relevant as possible to the experience of the participants. If there have been recent incidents of people being hurt because they have not followed the safety rules, they will be pparticularly useful. What do you do if someone gets hurt at work?Tell your ManagerFollow the safety rulesGet help

37Prior to the session:insert a picture of the team leader on the slideif you use another term (like supervisor or job coach) or reports of injuries need to be made to someone else, change the text on the slideShow participants a copy of the workplace injury notification form.Discuss filling out workplace forms, why this needs to be done and who can help. What does working safely mean?Following the safety rulesWearing the right protective equipmentKeeping the work area safe

38An important training tip to remember is the more relevant the examples are, the more meaningful training is to the participants. There is also more chance of the material being remembered. If there is an accident or something that could hurt someone, tell a ManagerWhat does working safely mean?

39The best workers work safely

40Explain that safety takes priority over everything else.Ask the participants for examples of where work is being done safely. In some workplaces a graph with injury free days can be an ongoing reminder about safety in the workplace. It may even be possible to set a goal of injury free days and reward workers when this is achieved.Find the hazard

41Before the session, change the picture in this slide to one of significant hazards in the participants work area.Ask the participants to identify the hazards in each picture. When the hazard has been identified work through the safe working behaviours and PPE required to reduce the hazard. For example in the picture provided the hazard/s are:box cutting knife blade exposedThe safe working behaviours are:using appropriate PPE when using the knifeTips for removing photographs and inserting new ones are included in the trainers guide.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR PERSONALITYBe a better listenerRead more and expand your interestsHave a positive outlook and attitudeHave a sense of humourBe supportiveTreat people the way you want to get treated

WHAT APCO GIVES YOUThe factors helpful in motivating the employees with non-financial rewards are as follows:(1) Status:Status means the position or rank of a person in the organization; it can be high or low. The rank of an employee is directly linked with his authority, responsibility and other facilities (e.g., a separate cabin, costly furniture, car, peon, PA., etc.).Everybody has a wish for a higher status. Therefore, the employees can be motivated by raising their rank or position. The attainment of a higher status fulfils the psychological, social and esteem-related needs.

MOTIVATION(2) Organizational Climate:Organizational climate means the working system within the organization. This includes individual freedom, receipt of awards, the importance of employees, etc. Every person likes to work in a better organizational climate. The manager can motivate the employees by providing a better organizational environment.(3) Career Advancement Opportunity:Every employee of the organization wants to advance his life. Promotion is an important example of advancement. Training and development facilities have got to be provided for the promotion of the employees. Therefore, the managers can clear their way to promotion by providing these facilities. When the avenues for promotion are available, the employees certainly get motivated.

MOTIVATION(4) Job Enrichment:Job enrichment means increasing the importance of work. Such a job should have (i) authority, responsibility, and a wide scope for challenges, (ii) there should be a need of higher knowledge and experience, (iii) the opportunities for personal development should be available, and (iv) there should be absolute freedom to take decisions. The employees feel proud of getting such a job. Thus, job enrichment enhances peoples interest in their work and they start getting motivated automatically.(5) Employee Recognition Programmes:Every employee wishes to be considered as an important part of the organization. It means that he should have his own identity and he should appear to be distinctive. Some of the examples are given below which help in the employees recognition:(i) Congratulating the employee for good work performance;(ii) Displaying employees achievements on the information board and publishing them in the news magazine of the organization;(iii) Awarding certificates of merit at the ceremonial functions of the organization for better work performance;(iv) Presenting mementos; and(v) Honoring for offering valuable suggestions.

MOTIVATION(6) Job Security:Job security is an important non-monetary motivator. Security of job means a feeling of permanence and stability. For example, if an employee has a sense of fear or insecurity in his mind, that he can be removed from his job any time, he will never work wholeheartedly and this worry continues troubling him.On the other hand, if he has a feeling that his job is secure and permanent and he cannot be removed from his job easily, he will work without any worry and with an easy mind. Consequently, his efficiency increases. This is the reason why people prefer a permanent job with less salary to a temporary job with more salary.

(7) Employees Participation:Employees get encouraged to notice their participation in managerial works. Therefore, they offer their full cooperation in making successful the policies prepared with their help.(8) Employees Empowerment:Employees empowerment means giving the employees more freedom to take decisions. When the decision-making power of the employees increases, they consider that they are doing some important work in the organization. This feeling motivates them.
