MED coastal areas: context and vulnerabilities
- 46,000km long coastline (42% of which in islands) - The number of cities of over 10,000 inhabitants located
along the coast has practically doubled within half a century, from 318 in 1950 to 584 in 1995.
- By 2025, the population of coastal cities would reach 90 million, that is 20 million additional city dwellers with respect to 2000, at an increase rate of 1% per year (Plan Bleu, 2007).
- Natural vulnerability of coastal zone is hampered by the concentration of people and activities on the coastal zone human activities (maritime, transport, fishery, tourism) that leads to an artificial land cover of the natural environment) and creating specific risks.

MED coastal areas: context and vulnerabilities
- The effect of human concentration in coastal areas associated to the change of climate patterns increase the exposure of these areas to ever more important risks.
Consequences may include: - Impacts on maritime transport and related infrastructure; - The loss of beaches, estimated about 15 Km2/year at
European level, threatening tourism activities and ecosystems balance;
- Damage to human health as consequence of the disappearing of half of Europe’s coastal wetlands and more directly by events of coastal erosion or flooding.
EU and programme approach
- Integrated Maritime Policy for the European Union- Communication “Towards an Integrated Maritime Policy for
better governance in the Mediterranean”- The Commission showed the willingness to provide a web-
based inventory of ICZM tools, best practices and case studies, support the development of the knowledge-base on ICZM in the Mediterranean, with particular focus on international co-operation, and test possibilities for strengthening the land-sea interface, in particular linking up terrestrial and maritime planning.
- Sustainable Urban Model, with the holistic approach (CAT-MED project)
- Malaga Charter- Sustainable Mediterranean Metropolis Platform (just started)
