DIRECTIONS TO TIMBER SALE FROM EXIT 76 OF I-75 AT BEREA: Take Interstate I-75 to Exit 76, the intersection of I-75 and KY Hwy 21. This exit is 34 miles south of Lexington, KY; or 12 miles south of Richmond, KY; or 35 miles north of London, KY. At the southeast corner of this exit is Walmart, the meeting place for the timber show. Travel east on KY Hwy 21 for ½ mile, then continue straight at its junction with US Hwy 25. Go one mile through downtown Berea, then bear right near the Boone Tavern to leave US Hwy 25 and to remain on KY Hwy 21. Go eastbound on KY 21 for 5 miles to the Bighill community, then turn right onto US Hwy 421. Head southbound on US 421 for 3 miles, up the mountain, and to the Morrill community, then turn right onto KY Route 1912. Go 3 miles, then bear left onto KY Route 2614. Go 3¼ miles to and through Three Links, then look for a mailbox on the left which says “2837 Stephens,” and immediately look for the gate on the right. The property has 800 feet of highway frontage on the right. Red paint indicates the boundaries of the timber sale unit.

DIRECTIONS TO TIMBER SALE FROM LONDON AND LIVINGSTON: From London, KY, take Interstate I-75 north to Exit 49, the Livingston Exit. This exit is 8 miles north of London, KY; or 61 miles south of Lexington, KY; or 39 miles south of Richmond, KY. Once you exit the interstate, turn right (east) onto KY Route 909. Go ½ mile, then turn left onto US Hwy 25 northbound. Go 5½ miles to Livingston, then turn right onto KY Route 490, cross the bridge, then immediately turn left onto KY Route 1955. Go 11 miles, then continue straight ahead to get onto KY Route 2614. Go 3 miles, then, immediately past an active dairy farm, look for the property on the left. Red paint indicates the boundaries of the timber sale unit. The property has 800 feet of highway frontage.

SHORTCUT FOR THOSE FROM RICHMOND AND POINTS NORTHWARD:

On I-75, just south of Richmond, take Exit 83, the Duncannon Road Exit. Travel east on Duncannon Road for 3½ miles, then turn right onto US 421/US 25. Go one mile, then bear left to leave US 25 and remain on US 421 southbound. Go 13 miles, up the western edge of the Cumberland Plateau, and to the Morrill community, then turn right onto KY Route 1912.

ENTERING THE PROPERTY: The gate into the property is generally open during daylight hours. If you pass through the gate at the highway frontage, you will find a gravel driveway available to use during your inspection of the timber. This driveway is about 1000

feet long. When you enter the property and when you leave, please be sure to pull the

gate closed, but do not lock it. Also, please do not park such that you block the driveway, as it is quite narrow. The gate is closed at night.

MARKING FOR BOUNDARIES: All boundaries have been marked with red paint on trees at the boundary, facing in toward the timber sale unit; or on the highway frontage, facing out toward the road. These red-painted boundary trees are not to be cut.

ACCESS NOTES: This timber sale area has very easy access and holds some fairly easy logging terrain. The property fronts for about 800 feet on the heavily paved Kentucky Route 2614. There are no turns on the public road system which would preclude the use of tractor

trailers, but this highway does a considerable amount of winding, particularly south of the property. Located less than 100 feet from Hwy 2614 is an old historic landing site from a logging operation from many decades ago. I would highly recommend using this, or a place very close to it, as your landing, as several old skid trails depart from it to various points on the property. Furthermore, the terrain is gentle enough, or “benchy” enough, on 90% of the area such that almost any harvesting and skidding equipment, including a self-leveling tracked feller-buncher, should be able to operate. The combination of easy access and “feller-buncher terrain” should make this an excellent candidate for highly mechanized logging crews. Even if you do not have such equipment available, then the access and terrain should provide for an easy logging set-up.

EXCEPTIONS FROM HARVEST: There are two nice cabins on this property. Generally, there are no trees marked for harvest within 150 feet of either cabin, nor within 60 feet of the driveway to the cabins (there are a very few exceptions). Though skidding across the ground is certainly expected for the trees near the cabins, no skid road construction will be allowed in these areas near the cabins. Furthermore, since a landing exists at the highway frontage, the driveway to the cabins is not available for hauling or skidding. Only one or two skid roads will be allowed to cross the driveway perpendicularly, and I would suggest that these should be located near the midpoint of the driveway. The crossing points will need to be fixed, leveled, and re-graveled before leaving the job. Other than at these crossings, use of the driveway will not be allowed by logging or hauling equipment. Also, there is no timber marked near or on top of a cliff area in the northeast corner of the property.

METHODS AND STANDARDS: A 100% tally was used to measure the saw timber volume. All trees to be harvested are painted blue at eye height and at stump height. A D-tape was used on ±95% of the trees to measure their diameters. A laser hypsometer was used on ±90% of the trees to measure sawlog heights. Generally, the minimum standard for sawlogs is a USFS Grade 3 log. Poplar logs are tallied if they meet these standards for sawlogs and/or the standards for peelers. This has been my normal sawtimber cruising standard over the years. For those who might want to use a broader utilization standard, such as pallet log standards, then you may likely expect to harvest somewhat more volume.

HARVESTING: On most of the timber sale unit, only timber marked with blue paint by Appalachian Forestry is for sale and may be cut. In my timber marking scheme, I have attempted to leave a few strong looking 12” to 18” trees per acre, usually white oaks or chestnut oaks, and less frequently poplars and black oaks. I have also attempted to wipe out the hickory and red maple, of both sawtimber size and pulpwood size. You will see this in your timber inspection. In any area where merchantable timber is being cut, all marked timber must be cut, whether merchantable or cull. There are significant numbers of trees marked with an “X.” These are trees not tallied for saw timber, but they must be cut. Extra care must be taken to minimize damage to those trees not marked for harvest.

Trees painted red denote boundary lines and must not be cut. Culverts or other improvements must be used at any crossing of a stream or public road ditch. Several pulpwood logs, a hollow log, or a culvert should be used at any crossing of a wet weather stream or seep. When operations are complete, all skid roads must be bladed, water-barred, and seeded. Any berms on roads must be pulled back in.

TIMBER NOTES: A volume of 267,230 BF Doyle is found on an area of 58 acres. Though the volume per acre is only moderately good, the quality of this timber is especially good. White oak is the real feature of this tract. White oak makes up 36% of the total volume. The white oak quality is excellent, and a great many butt logs should qualify as veneer logs and stave logs. I have attempted some form of estimate of the volume of white oak veneer and stave logs. This estimate is available on request. If you want this tally, you might make yourself available for a bit of explanation as to my thought process during the estimate, as this is my first attempt at stave log estimation. Chestnut oak makes up 32% of the total volume. The quality and size of this chestnut oak is extremely variable. There are a few dry points where the chestnut oak is small, and quality is lacking. However, in the hollows and flats, the quality and size pick up considerably. The hollow on the north side of the property holds some very fine, very tall chestnut oaks of good diameter. Some of these butt logs should qualify for the larger rift-sawn markets. Red oak makes up a surprisingly small percentage of the total. Black oak, northern red oak, and scarlet oak all contribute between 3% and 4% each of the total volume. Poplar is found almost exclusively on the lowermost ground in the hollows. It makes up 8% of the total volume. Hickory makes up 7% of the total volume. Red maple makes up 6½% of the total volume. Since I have marked nearly all of these two species for harvest, the average volume per tree of these species is fairly low. See the timber volume summary for more detail on overall breakdowns by species and by diameter. These are available in both Doyle and International Rules.

OTHER INFORMATION: Water bars and drainage structures will be required on all skid and haul roads before leaving and before shutdown periods of more than a month. Also, seeding all roads will be required before the end of operations. I would like a one week notice before operations begin or end. Please contact me or attend the timber showing to make certain you are familiar with any expectations which may or may not be part of your normal operations. Kentucky laws will apply. Enclosed volume estimate is not a guarantee. Each timber buyer should satisfy himself as to the quality and quantity of the timber before bidding. The owners reserve the right to reject any or all bids. Attendance to the timber showing is recommended but not required. If you have any questions, please contact me at: 423/282-9313 (office) 423/341-5659 (mobile) [email protected] Sincerely,
