REPORT ON THE PREPARATION OF MEDINFO 89

After Medinfa 8<i » the Organizing Committee of Medinfa 89 hasspeeded up the preparation for the Sixth World Congress onMedical Informatics and has held its first meeting .already*meanwhile* the China Council has h e l d a meeting in May 'todiscuss the problems in the preparation. Chinese Association forScience and Technology* M i n i s t r y of Electronics Industry andM i n i s t r y of P u b l i c Health devote great attention to the Medinfa89 which w i l l be held in Beijing. Here I w i'l I report to IMIA onprogress of the preprartion and the concerned problems asf a l l o w s .

1. On the extensively propagating of Medinfa 89 and thed i s t r i b u t i n g of the 1st Announcement of Medinfa 89 both in Chinaand Abroad

In addition to the 1st Announcement of Medinfa 89distributed an Medinfa S&* we have sent out the 1st Announcementto F i n l a n d * Hoi land) France* Japan) East-European countries*USSR* Hang Kang* Singapore* Tai l a n d * North and South Korea*I n d i a * and M o n g o l i a . Altogether we have dis t r i b u t e d nearly10*000 1st Announcement of Medinfa 89) and have received 380reply forms. Ue wi I I continue to d i s t r i b u t e the Announcement ofMedinfa 89 an 'Argentina meeting, an the EMI 87 in Rome and on theMeet i nghy.

In China* we wi I I prop-agate the importance of h o l d i n gMedinfa 89 in Bei j i n g in order to obtain support and h e l p fromal I sides. From A p r i I 10 to 14 we h e l d the Conference CMIA' 87 inX i a m e n * 503 members attended the meeting and submitted 800papers) among them 278 were adapted and 180 papers were declaredan the. meeting. On A p r i l 9 we h e l d IMIA Baard M e e t i n g ) on w h i c h -we discussed about the CMIA members'1 paper c o n t r i b u t i o n toMsdinfo 89 and the r e v i s i o n of -th e i r E n g l i s h t r a n s l a t i o n s * anddecided the technical projects and units which w i l l ca v i s i t e dby attendees qf Me d i n f a 89.

2. On the arrangements of Medinfa 89

A. On the requirement of IMIA Board Meeting held in BeijingA p r i l last year, a l l sessions* workshops and the commerciale x h i b i t i o n w i l l b e arranged in one group of b u i l d i n g s . Thuswe have two meeting sites for choice* both are j o i n t l yventured by China and foreign countries and both w i l l bef i n i s h e d no later than March 1989. Each of the sites has 7meeting h a l l s of 300-400 M ) 20 meeting rooms of SQ-1GQ M . * 3demonstrating h a l I s of 200-300 M ) a banquet h a l I which cancontain 80Q-100Q guests* an e x h i o i t i o n hal I as we I I asChinese and Western restaurants* cafe's* bars) bai Iroom*s w i m m i n g p o o l * b o w l i n g room* beauty parlour) g y m n a s i u m ) andstares and shops. The registration • area w i l l be in thereception h a l l . which i s 200-300 M-.Both of—the sites w i l l

a. China International Culture Exchange Center* uhcih has 250hotel rooms. The cost for s i n g l e room w i t h two s i n g l e beds i sUS$ 100/day* and for suite w i t h two beds is LJSS ISO/day. Thecenter is near the San I itun d i s t r i c t of foreign embassies andw i t h i n 2.5 k-ilameters there 'are some other hotels* such asKulun Hotel* Huadu Hotel* Zhao I one Hotel and Great UaI I-Sheraton Hate I . .

b. China- UorId Trade Center* which has 800 roams of fivestar hotel's l e v e l * the cost for double occupied ream is .US$110/day and 300 rooms of three star hotel's l e v e l * the costfor double occupied room is US$ 50/day. Around- the centerthere are Jianguo Hotel* Beijing-Toranto Hotel* ChangfugongCenter * International Club and Friendship Stare* also* i t . i snot far away from the Ritan d i s t r i c t ' o f foreign embassies.

a. Opening Ceremony and Welcome Recption

The Opening Ceremony w i l l be h e l d at 2:QQ-o:QO FM oh Oct.!<£>* 1989. Chinese state leaders and famous s c i e n t i s t s wi I Iattend the ceremony. On the ceremonyj one of Chinese leaaersicha.irman of OC* chairman of IMIA* representative from LJHO * •chairman of China Counci I and two keynote speakers u i I ! makespeech. S m a l l scale c o l o u r f u l performance w i l l b e g i v e n onthe ceremony.

As'for the two keynote speakers* one is a Chinese and the'other a foreigner. The Chinese w i l l be Dr. Ulu J i e p i n g * Vice-chairman of Chinese Association for Science and Technology*Honoured Presidest of China Medical Science Acacemy andchairman of China Counci I for Medinfo 89. The foreigner wi I Ibe named by IMIA.

After the Opening Ceremony* the LJeI come Recpticn w i l lb e gin at &sQQ PM. On the recption* except offering fcod>there are also large scale performances by many famousChinese artists and various games. The perfomance wi I Ii n c l u d e eastern and western s i n g i n g and d a n c i n g * concert*acrobatics* m a g i c * Qigong performance* Peking opera* andChinese movies w i t h E n g I i s h interpretation. The openingceremony has been p r e l i m i n a r i ! y decided to be h e l d at theGreat People's H a l l . But because of the budget d e f i c i t *instead it may be h e l d at Medinfo 89;s ma i n conference h a l l

On the ceremony> thef o l l o w i n g persons wi I I make speech: chairman of OC» chairmanof PC and chairman of IMIA; c h a i r m e n of IMIA, ,OC PC AND ECwi I I issue awards to excel lent papers; and at last chairmanof OC w i l l transfer the m a l l e t to the M e d i n f o 92;s OCchairmanj and the new OC chairman wi I I make a speech.

The FareuelI Banquet w i l l be held at 6'00 pm on Oct. 19>1989 at medinfo 89; s m a i n conference h a l l .

C. Simultaneous Interpretation

Bath of the meeting sites have the equipment forsimultaneous interpretation. The OC is now studying thep o s s i b i l i t y of E n g l i s h - C h i n e s e and E n g l l i s h - J a p a n e s esimultaneous interpretation. The ke-y p r o b l e m is the lack of

money .

China is a big potential market; and t h i se x h i b i t i o n w i l l make the exhibitors able to f i n d users inCh i na.
