Since cultivated plants are often not included in local floras (unless they have become naturalized), this book is an important adjunct to your local flora.

The best of its kind, mainly because it describes almost every edible native plant of any consequence. Of course, to do that in a small pocket book, the descriptions are short and many of the details of who used it and when, etc., are omitted. Mushrooms are also not included, because they “are not particularly nourishing, many are difficult to identify positively, and there are a number of good mushroom guides available.” The user must be cautioned that a local flora must still be consulted before identification can be considered certain, and certain identification must precede consumption! If there is any doubt, don't try it.

Lampe, K. F., and M. A. McCann. 1985. AMA handbook of poisonous and injurious plants. Chicago, IL: American Medical Association, 432 pp. A very good book, with descriptions and color photographs of many plants poisonous to man in the United States. Reference to a local flora must be made in addition to this book, to ensure positive identification. This book identifies important toxins, indicates symptoms, and suggests management. Not all poisonous plants have been included, but the book can be of great importance for those which are included. There is a chapter on mushroom poisoning, and a fascinating chapter listing plant species known to cause contact dermatitis (stinging hairs, needles, surface chemicals, etc.). Of course, if poisoning

is suspected, refer to a doctor or poison control center as soon as possible.
