his appendix provides an overview of all of the programs that ship with Windows 2000 Professional. For each program, you will find the following information:

A brief description of the program

How to access the program

If applicable, a reference to where more in-depth information about the program can be found

Many of the utilities can be added as Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-ins. For information about adding and accessing MMC snap-ins, see

Chapter 4, “Configuring the Windows 2000 Environment.”

ActiveX Control

The ActiveX Control utility incorporates ActiveX technology in the Win-dows 2000 environment. This utility can only be accessed as an MMC snap-in.

ActiveX is a set of technologies that allows software components to work together in a network environment, even if the components were created in

different programming languages.

Address Book

The Address Book utility stores contact information for people or busi-nesses. Through Address Book, you can manage groups, mailing lists, and electronic business cards. The contact information that is organized through Address Book can be used in conjunction with other utilities, such as Out-look, Outlook Express, Internet Explorer, NetMeeting, and Microsoft Phone System. To access Address Book, select Start �

Backup

The CD Player utility allows you to play audio CDs from your computer’s CD-ROM drive. To access CD Player, select Start �

Certificates

The Windows 2000 Certificates utility is used to manage and configure cer-tificates for your environment. The Certificate utility can only be accessed as an MMC snap-in.

Certificates are used to increase security through mechanisms that include secure authentication and the use of data encryption. Certificates work by

binding public encryption keys to corresponding private encryption keys.

Character Map

The Character Map utility allows you to copy and paste special characters into your documents. Examples of special characters include foreign-language characters and mathematical symbols. To access Character Map, select Start �

Control Panel or open My Computer and select Control Panel. The Control Panel programs are covered in Chapter 4.

Device ManagerThe Device Manager utility is used to manage the devices installed on your computer. To access Device Manager, select Start � Settings � Control Panel � System � Hardware tab � Device Manager. Alternatively, open the Computer Management utility, select System Tools, and then select Device Manager. You can also add Device Manager as an MMC snap-in. The main Device Manager window is shown in Figure B.7. This utility is covered in Chapter 4, “Configuring the Windows 2000 Environment.”

Disk CleanupThe Disk Cleanup utility identifies areas of disk space that can be deleted to free additional hard disk space. Disk Cleanup looks for temporary files, Internet cache files, and unnecessary program files. To access Disk Cleanup, select Start � Programs � Accessories � System Tools � Disk Cleanup. The Disk Cleanup utility is covered in Chapter 9, “Managing Disks.”

Disk DefragmenterThe Disk Defragmenter utility defragments your disk. To access Disk Defragmenter, select Start � Programs � Accessories � System Tools � Disk Defragmenter. Alternatively, open the Computer Management utility, select Storage, and then select Disk Defragmenter. You can also add Disk Defrag-menter as an MMC snap-in. The main Disk Defragmenter window is shown in Figure B.8. The Disk Defragmenter utility is covered in Chapter 9.

The purpose of disk defragmentation is to rearrange existing files so that they are stored contiguously. This optimizes disk access.

Disk ManagementThe Disk Management utility is the Windows 2000 graphical interface for managing disks, partitions, logical drives, and dynamic volumes. You can also perform remote disk management tasks with Disk Management. To access Disk Management, select Start � Settings � Control Panel � Admin-istrative Tools � Computer Management � Storage � Disk Management. You can also add Disk Management as an MMC snap-in. The main Disk Management window is shown in Figure B.9. The Disk Management utility is covered in Chapter 9.

Dr. WatsonThe Dr. Watson utility detects and displays information about system and pro-gram failures. The information that is collected by Dr. Watson is stored in a log file that can be viewed at any time. To access Dr. Watson, select Start � Run and type DRWTSN32 in the Run dialog box. The main Dr. Watson win-dow is shown in Figure B.10. The Dr. Watson utility is covered in Chapter 15.

DVD PlayerThe DVD Player utility allows you to play DVD disks from a DVD drive con-nected to your computer. To access DVD Player, select Start � Programs � Accessories � Entertainment � DVD Player. (This option will not appear if you do not have a DVD drive attached to the computer.)

DVD (Digital Video Disk) is a technology used to store data using optical tech-nology. DVDs have a greater storage capacity than CD-ROMs. Managing DVD and CD-ROM devices is discussed in Chapter 4.

Event ViewerThe Event Viewer utility allows you to view the Application, Security, and System log files. To access Event Viewer, select Start � Settings � Control Panel � Administrative Tools � Event Viewer. You can also add Event Viewer as an MMC snap-in. The main Event Viewer window is shown in Figure B.11. The Event Viewer is discussed in Chapter 15.

Fax Service ManagementThe Fax Service Management utility allows you to configure fax devices. To access Fax Service Management, select Start � Programs � Accessories � Communications � Fax. (This option will not appear if you do not have a fax drive attached to the computer.) This utility is covered in Chapter 4.

FreeCellFreeCell is a type of solitaire game that ships with Windows 2000 Profes-sional. To access FreeCell, select Start � Programs � Accessories � Games � FreeCell.

Group PolicyThe Group Policy utility allows you to define and control how users access programs, network resources, and the operating system. This utility can only be accessed as an MMC snap-in The main Group Policy window is shown in Figure B.12. Group Policy is discussed in Chapter 7, “Managing Groups.”

HyperTerminalThe HyperTerminal utility allows you to make a modem or null-modem connec-tion. You can use it to connect to other computers, online services, Internet Telnet

sites, and bulletin board services. To access HyperTerminal, select Start � Pro-grams � Accessories � Communications � HyperTerminal. Figure B.13 shows HyperTerminal’s Connection Description dialog box.

ImagingThe Imaging program allows you to manage images produced by devices such as digital cameras or scanners. To access Imaging, select Start � Pro-grams � Accessories � Imaging. Figure B.14 shows an example of a file in Imaging.

Indexing ServiceThe Indexing Service creates an index based on the contents and properties of files stored on your local hard drive. A user can then use the Windows 2000 Search function to search the index for specific keywords based on the content or properties of the document. To access the Indexing Service, select Start � Settings � Control Panel � Administrative Tools � Computer Man-agement � Services and Applications � Indexing Service. The Indexing Ser-vice can also be added as an MMC snap-in. A sample query using the Indexing Service is shown in Figure B.15. The Indexing Service is covered in Chapter 10, “Accessing Files and Folders.”

By default, the Indexing Service is not started on a Windows 2000 Professional computer. To start the service and have it run automatically, double-click the Indexing Service to open the Indexing Service Properties dialog box, select Automatic from the Startup Type drop-down list, and click the Start button.

Internet Connection WizardThe Internet Connection Wizard helps you configure your computer’s con-nection to the Internet. To access the Internet Connection Wizard, select

Internet ExplorerInternet Explorer allows you to access HTML (HyperText Markup Lan-guage) files from the Internet or from a local intranet. To access Internet Explorer, select Start � Programs � Internet Explorer.

IP Security Policy ManagementThe IP Security Policy Management utility is used to manage Windows Inter-net Protocol Security (IPSec). IPSec provides an internal security mechanism for encrypting data between two computers on a local network. IP Security Policy Management can only be accessed as an MMC snap-in.

Local Security PolicyThe Local Security Policy utility is used to set security policies. To access Local Security Policy, select Start � Settings � Control Panel � Administra-tive Tools � Local Security Policy. Alternatively, select Start � Programs � Administrative Tools � Local Security Policy. You can also add Local Secu-rity Policy as an MMC snap-in. This utility is covered in Chapter 6, “Man-aging Users.”

Local Users and GroupsThe Local Users and Groups utility is used to create and manage users and groups on a Windows 2000 Professional computer or a Windows 2000 member server. To access Local Users and Groups, select Start � Settings � Control Panel � Administrative Tools � Computer Management � Systems Tools � Local Users and Groups. Local Users and Groups can also be added as an MMC snap-in. Figure B.17 shows the default Administrator and Guest user accounts in Local Users and Groups. This utility is covered in Chapter 6.

MagnifierThe Magnifier utility is used to create a separate window to magnify a por-tion of your screen. This option is used for users who have poor vision. To access Magnifier, select Start � Programs � Accessories � Accessibility � Magnifier.

MinesweeperMinesweeper is a game that ships with Windows 2000 Professional. To access Minesweeper, select Start � Programs � Accessories � Games � Minesweeper.

NarratorThe Narrator utility is used to read aloud on-screen text, dialog boxes, menus, and buttons. This utility requires that you have some type of sound output device. To access Narrator, select Start � Programs � Accessories � Accessibility � Narrator.

NetMeetingThe NetMeeting utility provides a mechanism that can be used to commu-nicate with other users over the Internet or through a local intranet. To access NetMeeting, select Start � Programs � Accessories � Communica-tions � NetMeeting.

Network and Dial-up ConnectionsThe Network and Dial-up Connections utility allows you to create and man-age connections. You can create local network or remote dial-up connec-tions. To access Network and Dial-up Connections, select Start � Settings � Network and Dial-up Connections. This utility is covered in Chapter 11, “Managing Network Connections.”

NotepadThe Notepad utility is a text editor that can be used to create simple text doc-uments. To access Notepad, select Start � Programs � Accessories � Note-pad. Figure B.18 shows a sample text file in Notepad.

You can create more complex text documents through the WordPad utility.

ODBC Data Source AdministratorThe ODBC Data Source Administrator allows you to manage Open Data-base Connectivity (ODBC) data sources and drivers. To access the ODBC Data Source Administrator, select Start � Settings � Control Panel � Administrative Tools � Data Sources (ODBC).

On-Screen KeyboardThe On-Screen Keyboard utility displays a keyboard on the screen. Users can use the On-Screen Keyboard keys through a mouse or another input device as an alternative to the keys on the regular keyboard. To access On-Screen Keyboard, select Start � Programs � Accessories � Accessibility � On-Screen Keyboard.

Outlook ExpressOutlook Express is the default e-mail client software that ships with Windows 2000 platforms. To access Outlook Express, select Start � Programs � Out-look Express. The main Outlook Express window is shown in Figure B.19.

PaintThe Paint program allows you to create drawings that can be saved as bit-map files. To access Paint, select Start � Programs � Accessories � Paint. Figure B.20 shows a sample drawing in Paint.

Performance Logs and AlertsThe Performance Logs and Alerts utility is used to log performance-related data and generate alerts based on performance-related data. The data can then be analyzed through the System Monitor utility or through database or spreadsheet applications. To access Performance Logs and Alerts, select Start � Settings � Control Panel � Administrative Tools � Performance � Performance Logs and Alerts. You can also add this utility as an MMC snap-in. Figure B.21 shows an example of some counter logs in Performance Logs and Alerts. This utility is covered in Chapter 14.

Phone DialerIf you have a telephone attached to your local computer or a telephone switch attached to your local network, you can use the Phone Dialer utility to dial outbound telephone numbers. To access Phone Dialer, select Start � Programs � Accessories � Communications � Phone Dialer. The Phone Dialer window is shown in Figure B.22.

PinballPinball is a game that ships with Windows 2000 Professional. To access Pin-ball, select Start � Programs � Accessories � Games � Pinball.

Private Character EditorThe Private Character Editor allows you to create unique letters and logos, which can then be associated with specified fonts. To access Private Charac-ter Editor, select Start � Run and type EUDCEDIT in the Run dialog box.

REGEDITREGDIT is a 16-bit utility that can be used to view and edit the Windows 2000 Registry. This utility is included with Windows 2000 because it offers better search capabilities than REGEDT32. To access REGEDIT, select Start � Run and type REGEDIT in the Run dialog box. REGEDIT is covered in Chapter 4.

REGEDT32REGEDT32 is a 32-bit utility that can be used to view and edit the Windows 2000 Registry. This Registry Editor program is designed for Windows 2000 and allows you full access to the Registry, including capabilities to set secu-rity for Registry keys and view and edit all data types. These specific features

are not available with REGEDIT. To access REGEDT32, select Start � Run and type REGEDT32 in the Run dialog box. REGEDT32 is covered in Chapter 4.

Removable StorageThe Removable Storage utility tracks information about removable stor-age media, including CD-ROMs, DVDs, tapes, and jukeboxes containing optical discs. To access Removable Storage, select Start � Settings � Con-trol Panel � Administrative Tools � Computer Management � Storage � Removable Storage. This utility can also be added as an MMC snap-in. The main Removable Storage window is shown in Figure B.23. This utility is covered in Chapter 4.

Security Configuration and AnalysisThe Security Configuration and Analysis tool is used to compare your cur-rent security settings to a predefined template file. Based on the security anal-ysis, you can easily determine possible security violations. The Security Configuration and Analysis utility can only be accessed as an MMC snap-in.

Security TemplatesSecurity Templates is a utility that contains special files that specify a security configuration for your computer. This utility is used in conjunction with Group Policy and the Security Configuration and Analysis utility. The Secu-rity Templates utility can only be accessed as an MMC snap-in.

ServicesThrough the Services utility, you can manage all of the services that have been installed on your computer. To access Services, select Start � Settings � Control Panel � Administrative Tools � Computer Management � Ser-vices and Applications � Services. This utility can also be added as an MMC snap-in. The Services window is shown in Figure B.24. This utility is covered in Chapter 4.

Setup Manager (SETUPMGR)The Setup Manager utility allows you to create answer files that are used with automated deployment options such as Windows 2000 unattended installations, Sysprep (disk images), and Remote Installation Services (RIS) installations. This utility can be accessed by extracting the Windows 2000 Deployment Tools from the Windows 2000 Professional CD \Support\Tools folder. Setup Manager is covered in Chapter 2, “Automating the Win-dows 2000 Installation.”

Shared FoldersThe Shared Folders utility allows you to create and manage shared folders on the computer. To access Shared Folders, select Start � Settings � Control Panel � Administrative Tools � Computer Management � System Tools � Shared Folders. This utility can also be added as an MMC snap-in. Figure B.25 shows an example of the Shares folder in the Shared Folders utility. Shared Folders is covered in Chapter 10.

SolitaireSolitaire is a game that ships with Windows 2000 Professional. To access Solitaire, select Start � Programs � Accessories � Games � Solitaire.

Sound RecorderThe Sound Recorder utility allows you to create, mix, edit, and play sounds. The sounds you create can then be linked to files. To access Sound Recorder, select Start � Programs � Accessories � Entertainment � Sound Recorder.

In order to use the Sound Recorder utility, you must have a sound card, micro-phone, and speakers installed on your computer.

Synchronization ManagerThe Synchronization Manager is used to synchronize offline files and fold-ers. To access Synchronization Manager, select Start � Programs � Acces-sories � Synchronize. The main dialog box for Synchronization Manager is shown in Figure B.26.

Offline files and folders are a Windows 2000 feature that allows network fold-ers and files to be stored on Windows 2000 clients. Managing offline files and folders is discussed in Chapter 10.

System InformationThe System Information utility displays information about the computer’s current configuration. To access System Information, select Start � Settings � Control Panel � Administrative Tools � Computer Management � Sys-tem Tools � System Information. This utility can also be added as an MMC snap-in. Figure B.27 shows an example of System Summary information in the System Information utility. This utility is covered in Chapter 4.

System MonitorThe System Monitor utility tracks events related to system performance. You can track information using real-time data, or you can save data to a file that can be used for analysis purposes. To access System Monitor, select Start � Settings � Control Panel � Administrative Tools � Perfor-mance � System Monitor. The main System Monitor window is shown in Figure B.28. This utility is covered in Chapter 14.

System Policy EditorThe System Policy Editor utility allows you to create and edit Windows NT 4-compatible system policies. You access this utility through the POLEDIT.EXE command.

System Preparation Tool (Sysprep)The System Preparation Tool is used to automate Windows 2000 deploy-ment through disk images. This utility strips out all of the information that is used to uniquely identify a computer. Once the disk copy is complete and the target computer is restarted, a Mini-Setup Wizard runs to perform final configuration for the computer. This utility can be accessed by extracting the Windows 2000 Deployment Tools from the Windows 2000 Professional CD \Support\Tools folder. The System Preparation Tool is covered in Chapter 2.

TelnetThe Telnet utility provides user support for the Telnet protocol. The Telnet protocol is used to log on to a remote computer, network device, or TCP/IP network. To access the Telnet utility, select Start � Run and type TELNET in the Run dialog box.

Volume ControlThe Volume Control utility is used to adjust the volume associated with devices such as CD and DVD players, as well as the sounds associated with system events. To access Volume Control, select Start � Programs � Acces-sories � Entertainment � Volume Control.

Windows ExplorerThe Windows Explorer utility allows you to manage the Desktop and all of the files and folders stored on the computer. To access Windows Explorer, select Start � Programs � Accessories � Windows Explorer. Figure B.29 shows an example of the Local Disk folder in Windows Explorer.

Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) ControlThe WMI Control provides an interface for monitoring and controlling system resources. To access this utility, select Start � Settings � Control Panel � Administrative Tools � Computer Management � Services and Applications � Windows Management Instrumentation. You can also add the WMI Control as an MMC snap-in.

Windows Media PlayerThe Windows Media Player allows you to play audio, video, or mixed-media files. To access Windows Media Player, select Start � Programs � Accesso-ries � Entertainment � Windows Media Player.

Windows Task ManagerThe Windows Task Manager utility provides information about all of the pro-grams and processes that are running on the computer. Through Task Man-ager, you can start, end, or prioritize applications. To access Windows Task Manager, right-click an empty space on the Taskbar and select the Task Man-ager option. Alternatively, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and select the Task Manager option. The Applications tab of the Windows Task Manager dialog box is shown in Figure B.30. The Task Manager is covered in Chapter 14.

Windows UpdateThe Windows Update utility is used to connect to Microsoft’s Web site and scan your computer to ensure that you have the latest system files. If Win-dows Update finds that you have outdated files, the files are automatically replaced with the most recent versions. To access Windows Update, select Start � Windows Update. This utility is covered in Chapter 14.

WordPadThe WordPad utility allows you to create and edit text files that contain for-matting or graphics. To access WordPad, select Start � Programs � Acces-sories � WordPad. Figure B.31 shows a sample file in WordPad.
