Appendix D – Turning Movement Counts
CAPE COD TURNING MOVEMENT COUNTS 2007-2017
The Cape Cod Commission (and its predecessor, the Cape Cod Planning & Economic Development Commission) has collected and maintained a database of turning movement counts from Cape Cod intersections since 1988. The database includes over 1,000 observations. This report includes counts collected from the period 2007-2017 including 42 surveys during 2017. Traffic data over three years old are generally considered out-of-date as an input to traffic analyses but are included in this appendix as an aid to generating historic trends. These data are being provided for comparison purposes at intersections that have been counted more than once during the ten-year period and for consistency with the data available in the main text of the Cape Cod Traffic Counting Report.
The following are descriptions of the items included in this appendix:
Town: listed in contiguous geographic order used in main report (e.g., Bourne to Provincetown).
Major Road Name “E-W” or “N-S” @ Minor Road Name: shows general direction of travel of the major road. The direction north is considered up on the turning movement diagrams.
Site Code: a 4-digit identification number, unique to each intersection.
Date/Time of Study: includes beginning and ending times for observations (24-hour format).
Observed Peak Hour: the beginning time (24-hour format) of the busiest 60-minute period within the Observation period.
Report Hour: for most observations, this is the time period from 4 pm to 5 pm (listed as “16:00”). 16:00 has been identified to be the general “peak hour” for Cape Cod. If the Observation period did not include this 60-minute period, a different Report Hour is indicated. For weekday morning counts, 8:00 am is identified as the Report Hour.
Total Entering Volume: the total number of vehicles entering the intersection during the Report Hour.
Appendix D – Turning Movement Counts
Diagrams of Traffic Volumes: These figures show the total number of vehicles for each turning movement during the Report Hour. In some cases, “Partial Data” may be indicated if certain approaches/movements were not observed. Use with caution.
